Task Scheduler error 0x3 means Windows cannot find a path required by the task. The missing item may be the executable, a batch or PowerShell script, the task’s Start in folder, a data directory, a mapped drive, a network share, or a path embedded in the command. It is not a special success status and does not identify the exact missing location. Correct the task to use valid absolute paths, test the command under the task’s account, then run the task manually and inspect its history.
What does 0x3 mean in Task Scheduler?
Windows defines system error 3 (hexadecimal 0x3) as “The system cannot find the path specified.” Task Scheduler reports ordinary Windows system and network errors in Last Run Result, so 0x3 should be interpreted through the Windows system-error definition rather than as a scheduler-specific code.

The code identifies a class of failure, not the exact path. A task can point to an existing program and still return 0x3 because its working directory is gone, a script refers to a deleted data folder, a mapped drive exists only for an interactive logon, or a network share is unavailable to the account running the task.
Why a task can work manually but fail on schedule
When you double-click a script or run it in your own terminal, Windows supplies your user profile, current directory, mapped drives, environment variables, and interactive credentials. A scheduled task may run as another account, without your desktop session, with a different current directory, or with elevated privileges. Those differences can change how a relative path or drive letter is resolved.

For command-line tasks, an omitted executable path can also cause an unexpected lookup. The schtasks documentation warns that a target without a path can be assumed to be under %SystemRoot%System32. A command that succeeds from a project folder can therefore return 0x3 when launched by the scheduler.
Find which path is missing before changing the task
Check the executable, script and data folders
- Open File Explorer and locate the exact file shown in the task’s action: the
.exe,.bat,.cmdor PowerShell script. - Check every folder that the command uses, including input, output, temporary and configuration directories.
- Use the account configured on the task when checking a protected location. A path that is visible to your administrator account may not be visible to a service or standard user account.
- If the task uses a drive letter, determine whether that drive is mapped only after you sign in. A scheduled task running without an interactive logon normally should not depend on that mapping.
Restore a moved or deleted target, or record its new location before editing the task. If a path is on another computer, verify that the computer is reachable and that the share name is correct.
Look for paths hidden inside arguments
The Program/script field can be correct while an argument points to a missing file or directory. Inspect quoted arguments, configuration-file switches, input and output locations, and any path stored in the script itself. A script may also construct a path from its current directory, which is often different under Task Scheduler.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCorrect the Action and Start in fields
Use a fully qualified Program/script path
- Open Task Scheduler.
- In the left pane, select Task Scheduler Library and open the affected task.
- Choose Properties, then open the Actions tab.
- Select the action and click Edit.
- In Program/script, enter the complete path, such as
C:Scriptsbackup.cmdorC:Program FilesVendorapp.exe. - Put switches and parameters in Add arguments (optional). Do not append arguments to the executable path.
Use quotes around a path containing spaces. For example, set "C:Program FilesVendorapp.exe" as the program and put --config "C:Datajob.json" in the arguments field. Do not put the executable name in Start in.

Set Start in (optional) to the working directory
In the same action dialog, set Start in (optional) to the directory that contains the executable or the files it expects, for example C:Scripts. Enter only the folder path. Microsoft’s working-directory behavior treats this value as the directory containing the executable or its required files and validates it when the task is registered. If that folder no longer exists, the task can fail before the command starts.
For a program installed in C:Program FilesVendor, the program field might be C:Program FilesVendorapp.exe and Start in might be C:Program FilesVendor. For a script stored in C:Scripts, use C:Scriptsbackup.cmd and set Start in to C:Scripts.
Prefer stable local or UNC paths
A local absolute path such as C:DataReports is normally more predictable than a drive letter mapped in your personal logon. For a network resource, use its UNC form, such as \serversharefolder, and confirm that the task account has permission to the share and its folders. Replacing a mapped drive with a local path or UNC path is useful only when the destination and credentials are valid; it does not bypass access controls.
Make batch and PowerShell scripts independent of the scheduler’s current directory
Batch files
At the beginning of a batch file, explicitly change to the script directory when the commands rely on relative names:

@echo off
cd /d "C:Scripts"
rem commands that use files in C:Scripts
The /d switch also changes drives. Another option is to build paths from the batch file’s own location with %~dp0:
set "ROOT=%~dp0"
"%ROOT%toolsworker.exe" "%ROOT%datainput.csv"
Keep the executable and each data path explicit when the job must also work from a different account or trigger.
PowerShell scripts
Use a full path for the script in the action and use full paths, or paths derived from the script location, for files it opens. Do not assume that the scheduler starts PowerShell in the folder containing the script. If your script depends on a particular working directory, set Start in and still avoid fragile relative references for important input and output files.
Test the exact command outside Task Scheduler
Microsoft’s troubleshooting workflow starts with testing the script directly. Copy the exact executable path and arguments from the action and run them in Command Prompt or PowerShell. Use the same account and a complete path wherever possible.

- Open a terminal using the task’s configured account, or sign in as that account if practical.
- Run the executable or script with the same arguments shown in the action.
- Change to the intended working directory first if the task uses Start in.
- Confirm that the command can open its input and create its output.
If the command fails directly, fix the target, script, working directory, network path or permissions before investigating the scheduler. If it works directly but fails as a task, the remaining differences are usually the execution account, elevation, noninteractive session, mapped-drive availability or task definition.
Run the task manually and read History
- In Task Scheduler, right-click the task and choose Run.
- Open the task’s Status and note whether it changes to Running, completes, or stops immediately.
- Read Last Run Result after the attempt. Confirm whether it is still
0x3or has changed to a different system error. - Open the History tab and inspect the events for that run. Look for the trigger, task start, action launch and the point at which execution stopped.
If the task is meant to run at a future time, temporarily create or use a trigger a few minutes ahead, then observe the same History events. Export the task’s XML before making major changes; the export preserves the current definition for comparison or recovery.
Check the account, elevation and security policy
Verify the General tab
- Confirm the selected user or service account is the one that owns the required files and network permissions.
- Choose Run whether user is logged on or not when the job must operate without an interactive desktop session, and ensure the stored credentials are valid.
- Enable Run with highest privileges only when the program genuinely requires elevation. Elevation can change which folders, environment and mapped resources are available, so retest after changing it.
Check folder ACLs and batch-logon rights
The account needs permission not just to launch the executable but also to traverse its parent folders, read input, write output and reach any network share. Microsoft identifies permissions on C:WindowsSystem32Tasks, task credentials and the Log on as a batch job policy as possible causes of scheduled-task execution errors. A permissions failure can exist alongside 0x3: first make the path valid, then verify that the task account can use it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not solve a path problem by granting broad permissions to everyone. Give the configured account the minimum access required to the program and its data, and keep sensitive output in a folder that account is authorized to use.

Repair mapped drives and network shares
Why a drive letter disappears
Mapped drives are commonly created in an interactive user session. A task running when nobody is signed in, or running as a service account, may not have the same mapping. The letter can therefore resolve to no path even though it appears in File Explorer for you.
Safer alternatives
- Change the action and script to a local absolute path when the data can be stored locally.
- Use a UNC path such as
\serversharefolderfor a network location. - Confirm the server is available at the trigger time and that the task account has both share-level and NTFS permissions.
- If a connection must be established by the script, handle connection failure explicitly and log the result instead of assuming a drive letter exists.
Test the UNC path under the task account. Testing only from your own desktop session does not prove that the scheduled context can reach it.
Handle moved targets, upgrades and damaged task definitions
When a program or script was moved
Update the action, Start in folder and every path inside the script. If another task, shortcut or trigger still references the old location, update that definition separately. A valid new executable does not repair an old working-directory field.
Recommended Free Tools
When an operating-system upgrade left an incompatible task
Export the task XML first. Record its triggers, conditions, account, actions and settings. Then remove the broken definition and create a new task with current paths and credentials. Recreating the task is appropriate when the XML is corrupted or an upgrade left an incompatible definition; it is not necessary for every ordinary path typo.
- Right-click the task and select Export; save the XML somewhere accessible to an administrator.
- Verify the target and working directory in the exported definition.
- Delete the old task only after the backup is confirmed.
- Create a replacement task, enter the corrected absolute paths, select the intended account and configure the required trigger.
- Run it manually and confirm the History events before relying on its scheduled trigger.
Choose the least disruptive fix
| Repair choice | Best when | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Correct the executable path | The target was typed incorrectly, deleted or moved | Small change; preserves the existing task | Does not fix paths hidden in arguments or scripts |
| Set Start in | The command expects a particular working directory | Restores predictable relative-file behavior | The folder must exist and remain stable |
| Use local absolute paths | Files are available on the computer running the task | Unaffected by user drive mappings | May require changing where data is stored |
| Use a UNC path | The task must access a network share | Does not depend on an interactive drive-letter mapping | Requires network availability and correct share and NTFS permissions |
| Change account or privileges | The configured identity cannot reach the target | Aligns execution with required access | Changes security exposure and must be tested without a logged-on user |
| Recreate the task | The definition is corrupted or incompatible after an upgrade | Produces a clean current definition | Triggers, conditions, history and settings must be rebuilt; export first |
Common mistakes that keep 0x3 coming back
- Putting
--optionsin Program/script instead of Add arguments. - Entering the executable name in Start in instead of entering its containing folder.
- Using a relative path because the command works from an open terminal.
- Testing with an administrator account while the task runs as a limited service account.
- Leaving a mapped drive letter in a task that runs without an interactive logon.
- Updating the executable path but forgetting a data folder, configuration file or output directory inside the script.
- Deleting a task without exporting its XML, losing triggers and conditions that must be reconstructed.
- Assuming that a successful manual Run proves the scheduled trigger will work; the trigger time and account context still need verification in History.
When 0x3 changes to another error
After you correct the missing path, the task may reveal a different problem, such as access denied, an invalid argument or a script failure. That change is useful: it means execution progressed farther. Keep the absolute paths, then address the new error using the History event, the task account’s permissions and the command’s own log or console output. Do not undo a valid path correction merely because the next failure has a different code.
