Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →0x0090B8D1 is not currently substantiated as a documented Windows 10 or Windows 11 error code. The only matching report shows it as a low value associated with MSR 0x00000641 in a hardware-diagnostic dump after a computer turned off unexpectedly. The number alone does not prove that Windows, your processor, motherboard or storage drive has failed.
Use the surrounding evidence—the application name, event-log entry, dump file, timestamp and actual symptom—to identify the problem. The procedure below separates a monitoring value from a genuine Windows error and then addresses the likely causes of an abrupt shutdown, restart or freeze.

What 0x0090B8D1 means
The hexadecimal value 0x0090B8D1 appears in a Tom’s Hardware community forum report titled “Computer turned off by itself.” In that report it is shown as the low value of MSR 0x00000641 in a diagnostic dump that also contains processor, storage and unexpected-shutdown information.
The report does not identify the value as a Windows error, assign a cause or provide a code-specific repair. An MSR (model-specific register) value is data exposed by a processor or a diagnostic utility; it is not automatically a user-facing Windows failure code. Different tools can display the same hexadecimal formatting for unrelated data.

0x0090B8D1 by itself |
A hexadecimal value with no documented Windows diagnosis attached to it | Find the program, log or screen that produced it before changing anything |
MSR 0x00000641 beside the value |
A register reference shown in the forum diagnostic dump | Use the processor, motherboard or diagnostic-tool documentation for the exact model |
| An unexpected shutdown, restart or freeze at the same time | A real symptom that needs ordinary power, thermal, firmware and component checks | Investigate the symptom independently; do not infer the failed part from the number |
| A separate Windows stop code, application error or Event Viewer entry | A different identifier with its own troubleshooting path | Record and troubleshoot that identifier rather than treating it as 0x0090B8D1 |
Before you troubleshoot
- Save open work and back up important files if the computer is still usable.
- If the machine is hot, smells of burning, makes unusual electrical noises or repeatedly loses power, shut it down and disconnect it. Do not keep reproducing a potentially unsafe hardware fault.
- Write down whether the event was a complete power-off, an automatic restart, a blue screen, a freeze, a monitor-only reading or a one-time message.
- Do not delete registry entries, alter model-specific registers or flash firmware merely because this hexadecimal value appeared.
Step 1: Capture the complete context
The context is more useful than the digits. Preserve the original evidence before closing the utility or rebooting.
- Take a screenshot. Include the full window, utility name, tab or diagnostic section, surrounding values and any warning text. A cropped number is difficult to identify.
- Record the time. Note the exact local time and time zone, then compare it with the time of the shutdown, restart or freeze.
- Save the report. If the program offers an export, save the complete HTML, text or archive report. Record the filename and location.
- Note the hardware. Write down the computer or motherboard model, processor model, storage model and whether the system was on battery, a wall outlet, a dock or a UPS.
- Describe the trigger. Record what the computer was doing—gaming, waking from sleep, installing an update, transferring files, sitting idle or running a hardware test.
Step 2: Find where the value came from
If it appeared in Windows
Open Event Viewer by pressing Win+R, entering eventvwr.msc and pressing Enter. In Windows Logs, inspect System and Application around the recorded time. In Applications and Services Logs, also check the provider that matches the utility or hardware vendor. Open each relevant event and use Save Selected Events to preserve the original details.
Windows may show a documented event, stop code or application fault near the same time without mentioning 0x0090B8D1. Treat that identifier as the actionable lead. If no event contains the hexadecimal value, it may have been printed by a third-party monitor rather than generated by Windows.

If it appeared before Windows started
A UEFI or firmware diagnostic screen points to the motherboard, processor, storage or vendor test environment, not to a Windows repair routine. Photograph the screen and write down the firmware version and the exact test name. Then consult the current support instructions for your computer or motherboard model.

If it appeared in a monitoring or diagnostic program
Identify the program’s publisher and version. Look for an explanation of the register field in that program’s own help or support material. Do not assume that a field labelled “low,” “raw” or “MSR” is a failure threshold; its meaning depends on the utility and hardware model.
Step 3: If the computer powered off or restarted, check ordinary hardware causes
Overheating
Use the computer maker’s hardware diagnostics or a reputable monitor to observe processor and graphics temperatures under the same workload that preceded the event. Confirm that fans spin, vents are unobstructed and a desktop’s heatsinks are not packed with dust. A laptop should be tested on a hard surface rather than bedding or fabric. If temperatures rise rapidly or the system powers off under load, stop stress testing and arrange service; the hexadecimal value does not identify which cooling part is at fault.
Power delivery
For a desktop, check that the power cable is firmly seated, the wall outlet or surge protector is reliable and the power-supply unit is appropriate for the installed processor and graphics card. For a laptop, compare behavior on the charger and on battery, and inspect the adapter and charging connector for damage. A failing supply, loose connection or overloaded circuit can cause an abrupt loss of power without producing a useful Windows message.
Firmware and settings
Load the manufacturer’s recommended BIOS or UEFI defaults if custom overclocking, undervolting, memory profiles or aggressive fan settings were enabled. Record the original settings first so you can restore them. Install a BIOS or UEFI update only when the computer manufacturer’s support page lists it for the exact model and provides recovery instructions. Do not interrupt firmware flashing.

Memory
Run the built-in Windows Memory Diagnostic by pressing Win+R, entering mdsched.exe and choosing a restart-and-test option. If it reports an error, power the computer down and follow the manufacturer’s memory-removal and replacement guidance. A clean result does not rule out every intermittent memory or motherboard fault, so note whether crashes continue.
Storage and connected devices
Run the computer or drive manufacturer’s diagnostic for the exact storage model. Check cables and power connectors in a desktop, and disconnect nonessential USB devices, docks and external drives while testing. Reconnect devices one at a time if stability returns. Do not replace a drive, motherboard or processor solely because the diagnostic dump contained 0x0090B8D1.
Step 4: Apply model-specific updates and diagnostics
Once you know which machine and utility produced the value, use the manufacturer’s current support page for that model. Follow its sequence for BIOS or UEFI, chipset, storage firmware and hardware diagnostics. Prefer drivers and firmware supplied for the exact model and Windows edition; avoid generic packages that do not identify the device.
Keep a before-and-after record: firmware and driver versions, diagnostic results, the workload that triggered the event and whether the shutdown recurred. This information lets technical support correlate the dump with a known platform issue instead of guessing from the hexadecimal field.

Step 5: Troubleshoot a separate Windows error independently
If Event Viewer or a blue screen shows another identifier, copy it exactly, including punctuation and any named file. Search Windows Help or the hardware maker’s documentation for that identifier and follow its own recovery steps. A Windows component problem can coexist with a monitoring value, but repairing Windows files will not give an undocumented MSR field a new meaning.
For symptoms such as repeated application crashes or damaged system files, use Windows’ documented repair workflow for the specific message. Create a restore point or backup before system-level changes, and restart only when the repair tool requests it. If the only evidence remains 0x0090B8D1 with no Windows error, return to the originating utility and hardware diagnostics rather than running indiscriminate registry cleaners.
Step 6: Verify the result safely
- After one change, return the computer to the workload that previously triggered the event only if it is safe to do so.
- Monitor for the same symptom and check the relevant Event Viewer time window.
- Confirm whether the utility still reports the value and whether its surrounding fields changed.
- Stop testing if the machine becomes unusually hot, loses power repeatedly or shows physical damage.
- If shutdowns continue after manufacturer diagnostics, provide support with the saved dump, screenshots, event exports, hardware model and exact timeline.
What not to conclude from this value
- It is not proof that Windows 10 or Windows 11 is infected, corrupted or missing a particular file.
- It is not proof that the CPU, motherboard, SSD or hard drive has failed.
- It is not a reason to edit an MSR, delete registry data or install an unrelated “one-click” repair utility.
- It is not a universal code with one guaranteed fix; the correct action depends on the originating tool and the actual symptom.
When to seek professional service
Arrange service when the computer repeatedly loses power, cannot complete hardware diagnostics, shows smoke or burning odors, overheats immediately, or contains irreplaceable data that is not backed up. Give the technician the original report rather than only the number. A professional can test the power supply, cooling system, memory, motherboard and storage with equipment appropriate to the model.
