How to Fix “08007045d” Restore Errors in Windows 8

If Windows 8 displays 08007045d while you try to restore, refresh, or reset the computer, do not apply a hotfix based on that shortened string alone. Microsoft’s documented Windows 8 failures use different complete codes and different recovery paths. First record the entire message, including any leading 0x, and identify whether the failure occurred in System Restore or in Refresh your PC/Reset your PC. Then use the matching procedure below.

The two documented cases most often confused with this message are a WinRE Refresh/Reset failure caused by a corrupted offline-image SYSTEM registry key, and System Restore error 0x8007000D, “The data is invalid,” caused by restore-point metadata exceeding 64 MB. If neither description matches your screen, treat 08007045d as an unconfirmed code rather than forcing an unrelated fix.

What “08007045d” means in Windows 8

The text 08007045d is not enough to identify a single Windows 8 repair procedure. Error codes are normally written with a hexadecimal prefix, such as 0x8007000D, and the surrounding sentence identifies which recovery component failed. A code copied from a photograph, a log, or a truncated dialog can lose characters or the prefix.

Write down these details before changing anything:

  • The exact code, including every character and a leading 0x if Windows shows one.
  • The complete sentence below the code.
  • Whether you selected System Restore, Refresh your PC, or Reset your PC.
  • Whether Windows still starts normally, starts only in Safe Mode, or cannot boot.
  • Whether the operation stopped before it began, during a restart, or after restoring files.

These distinctions matter. System Restore uses restore points and has one documented Windows 8 metadata failure. Refresh and Reset run through the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and have a separate documented failure involving the offline Windows image. The same-looking number cannot safely be mapped to both.

Protect your files before attempting recovery

Copy important documents, photographs, browser exports, email archives, and other personal data to an external drive or a network location while Windows is usable. If the computer will not start, use another computer to create or obtain appropriate Windows 8 installation media and copy files from the affected disk where possible.

Refresh, Reset, and a reinstall can remove applications, settings, or personal files depending on the option and the condition of the recovery image. Read every confirmation screen. Keep the computer connected to reliable power and do not force a shutdown while DISM, SFC, System Restore, Refresh, Reset, or Windows Setup is operating. Interrupting a write to the system partition can leave Windows unable to start.

Identify which Windows 8 recovery operation failed

System Restore

System Restore returns system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed-program state to a selected restore point. It is not a complete Windows reinstall and normally does not remove personal files. The relevant documented Windows 8 error is 0x8007000D, accompanied by “The data is invalid.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Refresh your PC

Refresh reinstalls core Windows files while attempting to preserve personal files. Desktop applications and some settings may be removed, so make a list of programs and keep their installers or license information.

Reset your PC

Reset reinstalls Windows and can remove personal files and applications. The exact choices shown depend on the recovery environment and edition. Treat Reset as a destructive operation until you have a verified backup.

WinRE startup or automatic repair

If Windows will not boot, WinRE may offer System Restore, Refresh, Reset, Startup Repair, Command Prompt, or other tools. A failure in this environment is not automatically the same as a failure that occurs after Windows has started.

If Windows still starts: repair the component store first

Microsoft’s supported order for corrupted Windows files is DISM followed by System File Checker (SFC). DISM repairs the component store and supplies the files SFC may need; SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies.

  1. Save open work and sign in with an administrator account.
  2. Move the pointer to the lower-left corner, right-click, and select Command Prompt (Admin). Approve the User Account Control prompt. On some Windows 8 installations, search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
  3. Enter DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and press Enter.
  4. Wait for DISM to finish. Progress can pause for a long time at one percentage; do not close the window or power off the computer.
  5. After DISM reports completion, enter sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  6. Allow SFC to reach 100 percent, then restart Windows.
  7. Retry the same restore operation once. Use the identical restore point or recovery choice so that the result is comparable.

DISM’s /Online switch targets the running Windows installation. If Windows Update is functioning, DISM can obtain repair files from it. If DISM reports that source files cannot be found because the Windows Update client is damaged or unavailable, provide a matching Windows 8 installation or network source instead:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth /Source:<path-to-repair-source> /LimitAccess

Replace <path-to-repair-source> with the path to a legitimate repair source that matches the installed Windows edition, architecture, and language. Do not guess at a source path or mix files from another Windows release. A mismatched source can produce another servicing failure.

Interpret the SFC result

  • “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.” SFC found no protected-file corruption. The restore failure may be specific to WinRE, restore-point metadata, storage, or the exact error code.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.” Restart before trying recovery again.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.” Review the CBS log entries that SFC identifies, run DISM again with a known-good matching source if necessary, and consider installation-based repair. Microsoft notes that reinstalling Windows may be required when built-in repair cannot replace the damaged files.

When Refresh or Reset fails in WinRE

Microsoft documents a Windows 8 WinRE failure in which Refresh your PC or Reset your PC fails because the SYSTEM registry key in the offline image is corrupted. The computer may then be unable to start. This is a different condition from the System Restore metadata error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply the documented Windows 8 update only when it matches

  1. Capture the complete WinRE message and confirm that the failure occurred during Refresh or Reset, not System Restore.
  2. Determine the installed Windows 8 edition and architecture (32-bit or 64-bit). A package for another architecture or edition may not apply.
  3. If Windows can boot, install available updates through Windows Update, restart, and retry the recovery operation.
  4. If the update is not offered automatically, use Microsoft’s Download Center entry for the matching Windows 8 issue and verify the package details before installation. Do not download a file from an unofficial mirror or use a package merely because its filename resembles the one in an old support article.
  5. Restart after the update completes, enter WinRE again, and retry Refresh or Reset.

The historical package details in Microsoft’s article include component file version 6.2.9200.16548 for several Reset/WinRE components, with file dates in 2012–2013. Those details identify an old package; they are not a reason to install an unverified file today. Windows 8 support status and download availability can differ by edition and architecture.

If the computer no longer boots

Allow Windows to enter Automatic Repair, or start from matching Windows 8 installation media and choose Repair your computer. Select Troubleshoot and then the recovery option that corresponds to your goal. If the documented update cannot be installed offline, copy files first and use a legitimate installation source for a repair or reinstall. Avoid deleting partitions until you have confirmed that the backup is complete.

When System Restore reports 0x8007000D

Microsoft documents 0x8007000D with the message “The data is invalid” when Windows 8 encounters restore-point metadata larger than 64 megabytes (MB). Windows 8 does not support restore-point metadata beyond that limit. This is not the same as a general missing-file error and does not call for the WinRE Refresh/Reset update described above.

Confirm the exact symptom

  1. Open System Restore and note the complete code and wording.
  2. Confirm that the failure occurs while selecting or applying a restore point, rather than while refreshing or resetting Windows.
  3. Check that the operating system is Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012, the systems covered by Microsoft’s documented hotfix.

Use the supported hotfix cautiously

Microsoft’s article describes a supported hotfix intended only for systems experiencing this specific metadata problem. Read the article’s applicability requirements, choose the package for the correct architecture, and create a backup before installation. If the code is not exactly 0x8007000D or the message does not say that the data is invalid, stop and identify the full error instead of applying this hotfix.

After installation, restart and test the same restore point. If the restore point itself is damaged, a hotfix cannot recreate missing data; try another restore point or use a different recovery path.

Choosing between Windows 8 recovery options

Option When it fits What it changes File and application risk Requirement
System Restore A restore point exists and the problem began after a driver, update, or software change. Reverts system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed-program state to the selected point. Personal files are normally preserved; applications and drivers installed after the point may be removed. A usable restore point and a functioning System Restore service or WinRE entry.
Refresh your PC Windows is unstable or system files are damaged, but you want to attempt to keep personal files. Reinstalls core Windows components and resets many settings. Desktop applications may be removed; verify backups first. A working recovery image or matching installation source.
Reset your PC You need a clean Windows installation and accept greater data loss. Reinstalls Windows and removes selected or all data according to the option shown. Applications and potentially personal files are removed. A recovery image or installation media, plus backups.
DISM then SFC Windows boots and corruption is suspected. Repairs the component store and protected system files without intentionally reverting personal data. Usually non-destructive, but servicing can fail if interrupted. Administrator Command Prompt and a repair source when Windows Update cannot provide files.
Installation-media repair or reinstall Built-in recovery cannot start or cannot repair Windows. Depending on the selected Setup path, repairs or replaces the Windows installation. Potentially destructive; back up before partition or reset choices. Legitimate media matching the Windows 8 edition and architecture.

WinRE steps when Windows will not start

  1. Disconnect nonessential USB devices, memory cards, and external drives. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and backup drive connected as needed.
  2. Start the computer and allow Automatic Repair to load. If it does not, boot from matching Windows 8 installation media and select Repair your computer, not Install now.
  3. Choose Troubleshoot, then Advanced options.
  4. Try Startup Repair when the immediate symptom is failure to boot. This does not repair every restore-point or component-store problem.
  5. Use System Restore only when a suitable restore point exists and the complete error matches that path.
  6. Use Command Prompt for offline servicing only if you can identify the Windows drive letter in WinRE. It may not be C:; use diskpart and list volume, then exit to identify the volume containing the Windows folder.
  7. Choose Refresh or Reset only after reading the data-retention warning and confirming your backup.

Offline DISM commands require the correct drive letter and a matching source. Do not run an online command against the wrong volume. If the disk is failing, repeated recovery attempts can worsen data loss; prioritize copying files and obtaining professional storage recovery help.

Common reasons the repair still fails

The code was truncated

A missing character can turn 0x8007000D into a string that looks like 08007045d. Reopen the event, photograph the entire dialog, or inspect the recovery log so that the complete value is available.

The wrong recovery path was selected

A System Restore hotfix will not correct a corrupted WinRE image, and a Refresh/Reset update will not correct oversized restore-point metadata. Match the remedy to the operation that failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The repair source does not match

DISM needs files for the same Windows generation, edition, architecture, and language. Replace an incorrect source with matching Windows 8 media rather than repeatedly rerunning the command.

Storage or hardware is unreliable

Disk errors can corrupt the component store, restore points, or registry hives. Back up data, check the manufacturer’s storage diagnostics, and resolve hardware faults before attempting a destructive reset.

Recovery was interrupted

Forced shutdowns during servicing or reset can leave the installation in a partially modified state. Re-enter WinRE, keep stable power connected, and use installation media if the built-in environment cannot complete.

When to stop and reinstall

If the complete code remains unknown, DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows, the documented update or hotfix does not apply, and no restore point works, a repair installation or clean reinstall may be the remaining supported path. Confirm the Windows 8 edition, architecture, product-activation information, application installers, and backups first. A clean reinstall can remove everything on the Windows partition; do not select it while assuming personal files will survive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 8 is a legacy operating system. Older support articles and packages may remain available, but availability and applicability can change. Use Microsoft documentation and legitimate installation media for the exact edition rather than relying on an archived package from an unknown source.
