Replacing the filter that supplies your Samsung refrigerator’s ice maker is a short maintenance job, but the cartridge must match the refrigerator and lock into its housing correctly. Turn off the water, relieve pressure, install the model-compatible filter, flush the specified amount, check for leaks, and reset the reminder.
Samsung generally calls this part the refrigerator water filter. Because the ice maker and dispenser may share the same supply, the correct replacement procedure protects both systems. The exact filter location, cartridge family, flush volume, and reset button vary by model.

What the Samsung refrigerator ice-maker filter does
The cartridge filters water before it reaches the refrigerator’s dispenser and, on models with a connected ice maker, the ice-making system. It is a replaceable consumable, not a permanent appliance component. Samsung uses a filter-life indicator as a reminder and recommends changing the filter about every six months; the interval is a maintenance recommendation, not a guarantee that every cartridge reaches the same capacity in every household.

Samsung’s official instructions are the final authority for your refrigerator’s model. Start with the Samsung Canada replacement guide, the Samsung US instructions, or the regional manual supplied with the appliance.
Confirm the correct cartridge before you buy
A filter that looks similar can have a different locking mechanism or seal. Do not assume that one Samsung cartridge fits every Samsung refrigerator. Find the refrigerator model number on its rating label or read the part number printed on the installed cartridge, then verify it in Samsung’s Fridge Water Filter Finder and in your owner’s manual.

Common filter families and regional labels

The names above come from Samsung’s US and Canadian support pages, which use slightly different regional spelling and punctuation. Use the part number and model match—not the name alone—as the purchasing check. Samsung Canada says HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1 filters are available through its Canadian site and authorized Canadian retailers; availability and naming can differ in other countries.

Why a “universal” substitute is risky
Samsung warns that non-Samsung filters may not fit correctly and could leak or damage the refrigerator. That is the manufacturer’s warning, not an independently measured failure rate. If you choose a non-Samsung cartridge, verify that its dimensions, seals, certification claims, and model compatibility are explicitly documented for your refrigerator. Samsung’s Canada support wording is: “For best results, only use Samsung Genuine Filters designed to work with your refrigerator.”

Prepare the refrigerator and work area
You do not normally need to unplug the refrigerator. Gather the replacement cartridge, a towel or shallow tray, and the user manual if the housing or controls are unfamiliar. Keep the replacement’s protective cap in place until you are ready to install it.
- Identify the model and filter. Photograph the model label and the old cartridge’s part number so you can check the replacement before opening the water system.
- Shut off the water supply. Close the refrigerator’s supply valve or the household valve feeding it. Samsung’s Canadian procedure specifically calls for turning off the water before removing the cartridge.
- Relieve pressure. Dispense water until the flow stops. This reduces spray and makes the cartridge easier to unlock.
- Protect the floor. Place a towel under the filter area. A small amount of trapped water can spill even after the supply is closed.
- Locate the cartridge. Filter housings may be inside the refrigerator compartment, near the upper or lower interior, or in another position specified by the model manual. Do not force a cover or reach behind panels that are not designed for user removal.
Remove the old filter and install the replacement
HAF-CIN and HAF-QIN procedure
- Open the filter cover if your model has one.
- Hold the cartridge and rotate it counterclockwise until the unlock position or mark lines up.
- Pull the filter straight out. If it will not move, check that it is fully rotated to the unlock position rather than pulling harder.
- Remove the protective cap from the new cartridge when the cartridge design includes one. Leaving the cap on can prevent the filter from seating or opening the water path.
- Push the cartridge straight into the housing. Keep it aligned; a tilted cartridge can damage the seal or fail to engage the locking tabs.
- Rotate clockwise until the lock mark aligns with the housing and the cartridge is secure. Refit the cover if applicable.
HAFCU1 procedure
- Twist the installed filter to the left to unlock it.
- Pull the cartridge downward and remove it.
- Prepare the replacement as directed by its label, including removing any protective cap that covers the connection.
- Insert the new cartridge into the housing, then twist it to the right until it is secure.
- Check that the cartridge notch lines up with the arrow or matching mark on the housing.
These motions describe the filter families in Samsung’s support instructions, but a particular refrigerator can use a different housing or cover. If the markings on the appliance disagree with a generic sequence, stop and use the manual for that model. A cartridge should lock with normal hand pressure; forcing it can damage the housing.

Restore water, flush the cartridge, and inspect for leaks
- Open the water-supply valve slowly.
- Look and feel around the filter housing and nearby tubing for leaks. A dry paper towel placed under the connection makes a slow drip easy to spot.
- Dispense water into a large container and discard the initial output. New cartridges can contain air and loose carbon particles that should be flushed away before drinking or making ice.
- Continue flushing for the quantity specified for your model. Samsung Canada and US guidance commonly calls for about seven minutes or 10–12 large glasses. Samsung UK gives 10 litres or six to seven minutes for some filter types. These are regional, model-dependent instructions, not one universal volume; follow the exact appliance manual when it differs.
- Check the housing again after flushing and after the ice maker begins a cycle. If water remains clear, the flow is steady, and no moisture appears around the seal, the physical replacement is complete.
Do not count the first cloudy or sputtering water toward the required flush. Keep the discarded water out of the ice bin; if ice was made before flushing was complete, discard that first batch as well.
Reset the Samsung filter reminder
Installing a cartridge does not always clear the filter-life message automatically. Samsung uses different controls across refrigerator families. Depending on the model, hold Alarm, Water Filter, or Ice/Water for about three seconds. Other refrigerators place the reset command in a display menu or provide a dedicated control.

- Close the doors and wake the display.
- Use the button or menu named in the owner’s manual for filter reset.
- Hold the specified control for approximately three seconds when Samsung’s instructions call for a long press.
- Confirm that the filter icon or reminder changes to its normal, non-expired state.
If none of those labels appears, do not guess at a button combination. Search the manual using the refrigerator’s full model number. A reset only changes the reminder timer; it does not prove that the cartridge is compatible, installed, or leak-free.
Troubleshoot common installation problems
The cartridge will not lock
- Verify the model and cartridge part number again; a similar-looking filter may have a different connector.
- Remove any protective cap that the installation instructions say to remove.
- Pull the filter out, inspect the housing for packaging material or debris, and reinsert it straight.
- Align the lock mark, notch, or arrow before turning. Do not use pliers or excessive force.
Water leaks around the filter
- Close the supply valve and dispense pressure from the line.
- Remove and reinstall the cartridge, ensuring it is fully seated and locked.
- Check that the cartridge’s seal is clean and undamaged and that the protective cap is not blocking the connection.
- Reopen the valve slowly and observe the joint. If leakage continues, Samsung Canada advises that the cartridge or seal may need replacement; do not leave the water supply open to a persistent leak.
Flow is weak or the dispenser sputters
- Flush for the model’s full time or volume; trapped air can cause temporary spurting.
- Confirm that the household valve is fully open and that the cartridge is not partly locked.
- Check for a kinked supply tube or a filter installed at an angle.
- If low flow persists after correct installation and flushing, reinstall the old filter briefly only as a diagnostic comparison, then contact Samsung service or consult the manual rather than operating with a leaking housing.
The reminder stays on
- Make sure the display is awake and hold the model-specified reset control for the complete interval.
- Try the display’s appliance-settings menu if there is no dedicated filter button.
- Confirm that you are resetting the filter indicator, not an unrelated ice-maker or alarm setting.
Maintenance schedule and safe replacement habits
Plan to replace the filter about every six months, while treating the refrigerator’s indicator as a reminder rather than a measurement of contaminant capacity. Replace sooner if the manual specifies a shorter interval or if the appliance displays a filter warning. A filter that has been stored with a damaged seal, dropped, or left uninstalled with its connection exposed should be replaced rather than forced into service.
Record the installation date on the cartridge box or in a household maintenance log. Keep the next cartridge sealed until needed, and buy by the verified model and part number. Do not bypass a leaking housing by leaving the water valve open or by continuing to use a cartridge that will not lock.

- The refrigerator model and replacement part number match in Samsung’s compatibility information.
- The water supply was turned off before removal.
- Pressure was relieved by dispensing water.
- The old cartridge was unlocked using the housing’s marked direction.
- The new cartridge’s cap was removed where required, then inserted and locked with the marks aligned.
- The line was flushed for the exact model’s stated time or volume, and the initial water was discarded.
- The filter reminder was reset using the model-specific control, and the housing remained dry during inspection.
