Check the model and the instructions
Before opening the case, confirm it is the Defender Series Pro version listed for the Galaxy S22 Ultra, rather than a Defender case made for another phone. OtterBox’s Galaxy S22 Ultra product page identifies the compatible case and describes its construction: a polycarbonate shell, synthetic rubber slipcover, and polycarbonate holster.

The installation sheet linked below gives OtterBox’s general phone-case sequence; its text does not identify the Galaxy S22 Ultra specifically. OtterBox’s Samsung instruction index returned a Defender Pro guide for the S23, but its returned list did not show an S22 Ultra Defender Pro guide. Use the arrows and snap locations on your own case as your reference.

Install the case
- Remove the holster, if attached. The holster is optional and does not need to be attached to open or close the case.
- Take off the outer slipcover. Peel the flexible cover away from the hard shell.
- Separate the shell halves. Look for the marked arrows on your shell, then release the side snaps at those marked positions. Arrow placement can vary between device versions, so inspect your case instead of prying at an arbitrary point.
- Seat the phone in the bottom shell half. Center the Galaxy S22 Ultra in the lower piece. OtterBox’s instruction sheet says, “Place the device into the bottom half of the shell.”
- Close the shell. Align the top half over the phone and press along the edges until the sides snap together. OtterBox instructs users to “Place the shell top half on the device and snap the two pieces together along all edges.”
- Refit the slipcover. Wrap it around the assembled shell and check that it sits in the grooves and notches around the edges.
- Reattach the holster if you want it. It is not required for the case to fit securely.
If the case will not open or close
- If a snap will not release, stop and check for the marked arrow positions on your shell. Do not pry at an unmarked point or use a metal tool.
- If the shell halves will not close, check that the phone is seated correctly in the bottom half and that the top half is aligned in the right orientation. OtterBox’s sheet specifies releasing and closing the snaps but does not give force guidance; do not force a snap.
- If the slipcover will not sit flush, reposition it around the shell and make sure its edges are seated in the grooves and notches.
Screen protection is a separate, optional step
A screen protector is not needed to install the Defender Series Pro case. OtterBox describes the case’s raised edges and port covers on its S22 Ultra product page, and says it may be paired with a screen protector for more complete coverage. Its Clearly Protected Film for Galaxy S22 Ultra is listed as compatible and has its own included installation items. Install that protector separately according to its instructions if you choose to use one.

What the case listing says
OtterBox’s S22 Ultra product page also describes the case as having port covers and raised edges and lists wireless charging compatibility. These are manufacturer product-page claims, not independent test results.
