A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Use print CSS to control table width and page breaks, and set the paper size and margins with @page or your PDF renderer’s options. In Puppeteer, page.pdf() uses print media by default. Keep rows together with break-inside: avoid and its legacy counterpart, but treat that as a best-effort request: a row taller than the printable page may still split. Then inspect the PDF produced by the same renderer and settings you’ll use in production.
Why tables paginate differently in a PDF
A browser screen is a continuous viewport; a PDF divides content into fixed-size pages. When a table reaches a page boundary, the renderer must decide where to break it, how much width to give columns, and whether to repeat the header. Those decisions depend on print CSS, page geometry, table content, and the browser or conversion engine. A layout that looks fine on screen is not proof that the exported PDF will fit.
Puppeteer’s page.pdf() generates a PDF using the print CSS media type. That is usually the right starting point for a document intended to print. If you deliberately want the screen styling instead, call page.emulateMediaType('screen') before creating the PDF. Choose one mode intentionally; otherwise you may be debugging a print layout while looking at a screen preview.
Set paper size and margins first
Choose the page geometry before tuning columns. CSS @page can specify paper size and margins; renderer options can set format or explicit width and height, orientation, and margins. In Puppeteer, preferCSSPageSize: true gives a CSS @page size precedence over the renderer’s format, width, or height settings. If CSS and API geometry disagree, the output may be scaled or laid out differently than you expect, so keep them consistent.

@page {
size: A4 portrait;
margin: 12mm;
}
@media print {
/* Print-specific rules go here. */
}
Replace A4 portrait with the paper size and orientation your readers actually need. For Letter, for example, use Letter portrait. The sample margin is a practical starting point, not a universal requirement: check the printable area required by your use case and the PDF renderer. If the table is too wide in portrait, try landscape before shrinking the text until it is difficult to read.
Make the table fit the printable width
A predictable width strategy is more reliable than letting long cell content expand columns unpredictably. Start with width: 100%; use explicit column widths where certain fields need more or less room. Set table-layout: fixed when stable column sizing matters more than intrinsic content expansion. The W3C CSS Print Profile says tables should be treated as if table-layout were set to fixed for print, which makes fixed layout a sensible print-oriented choice.
Fixed layout does not make text disappear or guarantee that every column will be readable. Long words, URLs, and identifiers can still force awkward wrapping or clipping unless you handle them. Use overflow-wrap: anywhere for cells that may contain unbroken strings. Reduce cell padding or font size modestly if needed; if the result is still cramped, redesign the table or divide it into meaningful sections instead of forcing an unreadable page-wide grid.

Keep rows together and repeat table headers
Use semantic table markup: put column headings inside <thead> and data rows inside <tbody>. To encourage a renderer to repeat the header on later pages, a common print CSS technique is thead { display: table-header-group; }. This is a renderer-dependent implementation technique, not a guarantee that every browser or PDF engine will repeat the header identically. Verify it in the engine that creates the final PDF.

Depending on the renderer, applying them to the row, cells, or row group may help:
@media print {
table.report {
width: 100%;
table-layout: fixed;
border-collapse: collapse;
}
table.report thead {
display: table-header-group;

table.report tr,

break-inside: avoid;
page-break-inside: avoid;
}
table.report th,
table.report td {
overflow-wrap: anywhere;
padding: 3pt 4pt;
}
}
page-break-inside is a legacy alias retained for compatibility; pairing it with break-inside can help older engines. Neither declaration is an absolute rule. The W3C CSS Print Profile notes that if an element is longer than a page, a printer may print as much as fits and continue it on a later page. A very tall row cannot be kept intact when it exceeds the printable page height. Shorten or restructure that content, or accept a split where necessary.

Export a PDF with Puppeteer
The following Node.js example opens a page URL supplied on the command line and writes an A4 PDF. It uses print media, includes backgrounds, and sets CSS page sizing to take precedence. Install Puppeteer in your project first, save this as export.js, then run node export.js https://example.com/report. Replace the example URL with a page you are authorized to access.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
async function main() {
const target = process.argv[2];
if (!target) {
throw new Error('Usage: node export.js <page-url>');
}
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto(target, { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
await page.emulateMediaType('print'); // Optional: page.pdf() defaults to print media.
await page.pdf({
path: 'report.pdf',
format: 'A4',
printBackground: true,
preferCSSPageSize: true,
margin: {
top: '12mm',
right: '12mm',
bottom: '12mm',
left: '12mm'
}
});
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
}
main().catch((error) => {
console.error(error);
process.exitCode = 1;
});
Put the @page and table rules in the page’s print stylesheet, or otherwise ensure that the page loads them before export. networkidle0 waits for network activity to settle; pages with persistent network requests may not reach that state promptly. If that is a problem, choose an appropriate readiness condition for the page rather than assuming a particular wait strategy suits every site.
Puppeteer also documents PDF options for format, width, height, landscape orientation, margins, scale, print backgrounds, and CSS page-size precedence. Use either the format or explicit dimensions that match your intended paper, and avoid conflicting page geometry between CSS and the API. The example’s explicit emulateMediaType('print') is optional because page.pdf() already uses print media.

Check the actual PDF, not just the preview
- Confirm the page rules are active. Inspect the generated file for print-specific styling, including table width and page size. A screen preview can use different CSS.
- Check every page boundary. Look for split rows, repeated headers, unexpectedly blank pages, and content clipped at the right or bottom edge.
- Test representative content. Include the longest labels, URLs, and cell values your report can produce. A short sample may not reveal wrapping or pagination failures.
- Match the production environment. Validate using the same browser or conversion engine, fonts, print media mode, and page-size settings used for delivery. Different renderers may handle fragmentation and header repetition differently.
- Adjust one cause at a time. If a page is too wide, change orientation, widths, padding, or wrapping; if rows split, reduce their height or restructure them. Re-export after each meaningful change.
Troubleshoot common table-to-PDF problems
Rows split despite the break rules
Apply break-inside: avoid and page-break-inside: avoid to the row and, if needed, its cells or row group. Renderer support varies, and the rule cannot preserve an element taller than the page. Reduce the row’s content or allow a deliberate split for exceptionally long rows.
The right side of the table is clipped
Check whether the table exceeds the printable width after margins. Switch to landscape, use more predictable column widths, reduce padding carefully, or restructure the table. For long unbroken values, add overflow-wrap: anywhere. Do not rely on a screen viewport’s width as a proxy for the PDF’s printable area.
Pages are blank or shifted unexpectedly
Inspect forced break-before or break-after rules, large page margins, fixed-height containers, and elements taller than a page. These can push content onto extra pages or leave apparent gaps. Check both the page CSS and the renderer’s margin and size options.

The output differs from the browser preview
Use the same renderer version, print media mode, fonts, and page-size settings in both paths. Puppeteer’s PDF path uses print CSS by default; a normal browser view may be showing screen styles. Validate the final exported file rather than relying on a preview alone.
Choose a renderer with the document in mind
When selecting a browser or HTML-to-PDF engine, compare its print-media fidelity, fragmentation and repeated-header behavior, control over page size and margins, font availability, JavaScript execution, consistency between environments, and operational cost. Standards describe intended CSS behavior, but the final result depends on the engine that implements it. A useful test is a representative report containing wide columns, long rows, and enough data to cross several page boundaries.
