Fine-tune Nemotron 3.5 ASR only when a measured baseline shows errors that lighter fixes do not resolve: output in the wrong language or dialect, domain vocabulary the model consistently gets wrong, or accent and channel conditions that persist on held-out audio. NVIDIA’s worked examples show large word error rate (WER) reductions for Greek, Bulgarian, and Saudi Arabic dialects. Those gains come from specific corpora, test sets, and latency settings, so use them as evidence of what adaptation can do, not as a forecast for your data.
What Nemotron 3.5 ASR is and what it is not
NVIDIA describes Nemotron 3.5 ASR as a 600-million-parameter multilingual streaming speech recognition model covering 40 language-locales. It combines a Cache-Aware FastConformer encoder with an RNNT decoder and uses prompt-based language-ID conditioning, which means the model receives a language label as part of its input. That label is why the language tags used in training must be values the model recognizes (NVIDIA’s June 4, 2026 Hugging Face walkthrough).

Inference exposes one main operating choice: the attention context setting, which trades latency against accuracy. The walkthrough gives examples from 80 ms up to 1.12 seconds. Each setting is a different operating point, so an evaluation only tells you something about the setting you will deploy.

Decide whether fine-tuning is the right fix
Fine-tuning is the most expensive lever in this workflow. It should follow a measured baseline, not precede one.
Step 1: Measure a baseline under production conditions
Collect audio that represents what your system will actually hear, with reference transcripts. Compute WER, and character error rate (CER) where it is more informative for your language, using the same decoding setup and attention context you expect to ship. A baseline measured at a different latency setting does not tell you whether the model is good enough for your deployment.
Step 2: Classify the errors
Tag each error by type: vocabulary (names, product terms, technical jargon), language (wrong language or script), accent or dialect, channel (telephone, far-field, compressed audio), and background noise. NVIDIA’s NeMo documentation lists domain data, accents, acoustic environments, and new languages among its fine-tuning use cases (NeMo fine-tuning documentation; NVIDIA Speech NIM customization guide). Those categories are a useful way to organize errors, but a category appearing in the list does not mean fine-tuning will fix it.

Vocabulary errors can sometimes be addressed without training, through vocabulary boosting or language-model adaptation where your serving stack supports them. The cited NVIDIA material does not benchmark these options against Nemotron 3.5 ASR, so run them against the same held-out set before you commit to training.

| Dominant error pattern | First step | Fine-tuning becomes reasonable when |
|---|---|---|
| Known domain terms, names, or product codes misrecognized in otherwise correct speech | Vocabulary boosting or language-model adaptation, if your stack supports them | The errors persist on held-out audio after the lighter change |
| Output in the wrong language or script for a locale the model covers | Confirm the language setting and tag match the locale | Errors persist with correct tags and matching training data |
| Regional dialect or accent where word choice or pronunciation diverges from the base model | Build a dialect-matched held-out set to confirm the gap | The gap is consistent across speakers and is not explained by recording quality |
| Noisy or far-field channel | Improve capture or preprocessing where possible | Errors remain on representative channel audio after that work |
| Language outside the model’s 40 locales | Confirm the locale is absent from the current model card | The cited NVIDIA material does not establish a recipe for locales outside the 40; treat this path as unproven until you test it |
Build the training corpus
Audio format and manifest
The walkthrough’s inference example uses mono WAV audio and a NeMo manifest in JSON Lines format, with one object per clip containing the audio path, duration, and transcript. NeMo ASR manifests conventionally name these keys audio_filepath, duration, and text; confirm the keys against the tutorial you follow.
A single manifest line looks like this:
{"audio_filepath": "/data/ar/clip_000123.wav", "duration": 4.82, "text": "Hello, how can I help you today?"}
Language tags and transcript style
The Nemotron-specific recipe uses tarred NeMo or Lhotse data, and it requires a correct target_lang tag on every clip. Transcripts should follow the model’s output style: punctuated and properly cased. If your references are lowercase or unpunctuated, the model learns a different target than the one it produces, and your WER comparison becomes harder to interpret.
A held-out test set kept out of training
Hold out test audio before training begins. Make the split speaker- and condition-aware, so that held-out speakers and recording conditions were not seen during training. Training-set scores say little about generalization.

How much labeled audio do I need?
There is no universal threshold, and the published experiments differ in language, corpus, task, and evaluation, so their data volumes should not be compared directly. Two reported examples:
- Greek and Bulgarian: the walkthrough describes a balanced Greek/Bulgarian mix of approximately 2,000 hours. The same article also describes a training pool growing from roughly 290 hours to roughly 2,300 hours after about 2,000 hours of parliamentary speech were added. Those are pool descriptions at two points in the article, not one exact dataset total.
- Saudi Arabic dialects: NVIDIA’s Technical Blog reports 133.7 hours of Najdi and Hijazi speech (NVIDIA Technical Blog, Saudi Arabic dialect fine-tuning).
NVIDIA’s customization guide warns that small adaptation sets can overfit and degrade general-domain performance (NVIDIA Speech NIM customization guide). Judge sufficiency by the held-out curve on your own test set, not by a hour count copied from another project.
Start from the Nemotron checkpoint and keep language conditioning
Follow the Nemotron-specific worked example rather than a generic NeMo recipe. The sequence is:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the Nemotron 3.5 ASR fine-tuning walkthrough and identify the NeMo checkpoint it initializes from.
- Initialize training from that Nemotron checkpoint, not from a checkpoint named in a generic sample.
- Configure datasets as tarred NeMo or Lhotse data, following the walkthrough’s layout.
- Confirm that every clip carries a
target_langtag whose value the model recognizes. - Run a short training job on a small subset and check that the tags, transcripts, and manifest parse correctly before launching the full run.
General NeMo fine-tuning documentation explains checkpoint initialization from pretrained or local files, dataset configuration, and how tokenizer changes behave (NeMo fine-tuning documentation). Its sample invocation names a Parakeet checkpoint. Use that sample for the mechanics only, and do not present it as a Nemotron command. Read the tokenizer-change behavior before you alter the vocabulary, because it can change how the adapted model handles your language.

Keep the update conservative and protect the rest of the model
Adaptation on a narrow slice can make the model worse elsewhere. NVIDIA’s customization guide recommends replay or mixing with larger general data as a precaution (NVIDIA Speech NIM customization guide). No method guarantees against forgetting, so the held-out check on non-target conditions remains necessary.
Replay mixing
The Saudi Arabic tutorial uses replay mixing with a Nemotron example, and it reports measurements on both the target dialect and a cross-language test (NVIDIA Technical Blog, Saudi Arabic dialect fine-tuning). Treat replay as an option to evaluate, not a default you can skip the check for.
Partial encoder unfreezing
The same tutorial reports that unfreezing only part of the encoder reduces compute, at some cost to accuracy (NVIDIA Technical Blog, Saudi Arabic dialect fine-tuning). Run both full and partial variants on the same held-out set if compute is a constraint, and compare the accuracy cost directly rather than assuming it is small.

Compute in the published Saudi run
NVIDIA’s Technical Blog reports that the Saudi dialect baseline experiment, a 12,000-step run, used two NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Workstation Edition GPUs. That is the documented setup of one experiment. It is not a minimum hardware requirement, and the sources do not establish one for other data sizes or step counts.

Evaluate at the latency you will ship
Compare the base and adapted models on the same unseen test data, at the streaming attention context you will deploy. Track the target WER and, where your product serves them, the non-target languages or dialects. The published results below are the reference points, and they are not guarantees.
| Experiment (source) | Test set and conditions | Base | Fine-tuned | Reported change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Greek (NVIDIA Hugging Face walkthrough, June 4, 2026) | Held-out FLEURS; 80 ms chunk latency, the lowest-latency streaming evaluation in that example | 35% WER | 24% WER | 32% relative improvement as reported. The rounded figures imply about 31%, so the reported value presumably uses unrounded WERs. |
| Bulgarian (NVIDIA Hugging Face walkthrough, June 4, 2026) | Held-out FLEURS; 80 ms chunk latency, the lowest-latency streaming evaluation in that example | 22% WER | 15% WER | 31% relative improvement as reported. The rounded figures imply about 32%. |
| Saudi Arabic dialects, Najdi and Hijazi (NVIDIA Technical Blog) | Target test split; attention context and latency not stated | 55.05% WER | 29.96% WER | About 25.1 percentage points lower on the target split |
| Saudi Arabic experiment, English (non-target) | Same experiment; attention context and latency not stated | 11.04% WER | 10.42% WER | Small change: 0.62 points lower, a shift that is within the range you would need to confirm on your own set |
The Greek and Bulgarian figures are target-language results only. If your product also serves other languages, the Saudi English row shows the kind of non-target check the walkthrough does not provide for those languages.

Serving path and latency setting
NVIDIA’s walkthrough states that the adapted model keeps the same architecture and can use the same serving path, with inference latency and accuracy set through the attention context. Because that setting changes the operating point, repeat your evaluation at the exact value you ship, not only at the one used during training.
