How to Find Your Way Back to Places You’ve Already Explored in Open-World Games

The most reliable way to return to a place in an open-world game is to mark it before you leave. Open the map, place a pin or beacon on the destination, then follow that marker with the compass, minimap, or an in-world indicator. If you did not mark the location, use the map legend, nearby discovered landmarks, route-history tools, or an unlocked fast-travel point to reconstruct the trip.

There is no universal control scheme. Some games show a custom marker only on the map; others project it onto the compass or into the world. Route histories, fast travel, marker limits, and unlock requirements also differ by title, edition, platform, and update.

The dependable method in almost any open-world game

When you know the destination, preserve it first and navigate second. Pause or open the world map, identify the place by its discovered icon or surrounding landmark, and add a custom marker. Choose a marker symbol you will recognize later. If the game allows notes, record a short reminder such as “cave entrance behind waterfall” rather than relying on memory.

Return to the game and use the marker as a direction rather than repeatedly reopening the map. A compass may show a small icon, a minimap may indicate bearing, or the game may render a beam, glow, or other beacon in the landscape. Check the map legend so you know whether the symbol is a quest objective, a discovered location, a personal pin, or a temporary waypoint.

If the place was never marked, reconstruct it from evidence: look for the route you already traveled, compare the terrain around the destination with the map, and start from a nearby fast-travel point if one is available. Fast travel usually reaches a hub or shrine, not the exact point you remember, so plan for the final walk.

Four navigation tools and what each one actually does

Custom map pins and beacons

A pin records an arbitrary position that matters to you: a locked door, resource node, puzzle, hidden entrance, merchant, or scenic overlook. A beacon is a more prominent version when the game supports one. It may remain on the map, appear on the compass, or be visible in the world. This is the best tool when you know exactly where you want to return.

Some games let you place pins anywhere; others allow markers only on discovered locations or limit the number you can keep. If several marker types are available, assign a consistent meaning to each one—for example, one color for unfinished objectives and another for useful resources. Remove temporary pins after completing them so an old marker does not mislead you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compass and minimap orientation

A marker tells you where to go, but the compass or minimap translates it into movement. A rotating map can make a familiar route look different every time you open it. If the game offers a north-fixed minimap, enable it when you prefer a stable reference. Otherwise, notice which direction is north before setting out and keep the map orientation consistent while checking landmarks.

Use the marker for the broad bearing and the terrain for the final approach. A straight line on the map may cross a cliff, canyon, hostile zone, or body of water. When the marker stops getting closer, zoom out and look for a road, bridge, tunnel, elevator, or pass that connects your current area to the destination.

Route history and footprint displays

A route-history feature answers a different question: not “Where is the place?” but “Where have I already been?” It can reveal a path you walked or rode when the destination itself has faded from memory. These displays are especially useful for finding the edge of an unexplored region, retracing a missed fork, or identifying a cave entrance passed during a long journey.

Route histories are not universal and may be optional, limited in duration, or locked behind progression or downloadable content. A visible line proves that you traveled through an area; it does not necessarily identify the exact object you wanted. Use the line with terrain, map icons, and screenshots or notes to narrow the search.

Fast travel

Fast travel shortens the return trip when the destination is near an unlocked point. It may require a discovered shrine, station, settlement, or wayshrine; some games charge in-game currency, while others restrict travel during combat, certain quests, or special conditions. The destination itself generally must be discovered before it can serve as a travel target.

Think of fast travel as a two-stage route: teleport to the nearest reliable hub, then follow your personal marker for the remaining distance. This avoids wasting time searching the entire map for a place that is only a few minutes from a known point.

A seven-step procedure for retracing an old location

  1. Open the map. Pause the game and switch to the full map rather than relying only on the minimap. Identify the region, discovered icons, named landmarks, and any personal markers.
  2. Confirm what the icon means. Open the legend or move the cursor over the symbol. Distinguish a completed activity from an unfinished one, a quest objective from a custom pin, and a fast-travel point from an ordinary place name.
  3. Place or select a marker. Put a pin directly on the destination or select the discovered icon closest to it. If the game supports notes, write a landmark-based description that will still make sense after several sessions.
  4. Choose a starting point. If you are far away, select the closest unlocked fast-travel point. If no suitable point exists, begin from a road, settlement, or other landmark you can identify in the world.
  5. Set a stable heading. Note the marker’s position on the compass. If the minimap rotates and the game provides a north-fixed option, use it; otherwise, orient the map before moving and recheck it at major junctions.
  6. Follow the terrain, not just the line. Use roads, bridges, passes, tunnels, elevators, and shoreline contours to reach the marker. A direct map line is a bearing, not a promise that the intervening ground is traversable.
  7. Verify the arrival. Compare the surrounding landmark with your memory. If the place is not there, check whether the marker was placed on the wrong side of a ridge, above or below the current elevation, or on a nearby icon rather than the actual entrance.

How the method works in specific games

Elden Ring: use a beacon for an arbitrary destination

Bandai Namco’s official ELDEN RING Introduction Part 3 – Gameplay Overview, published July 19, 2023, distinguishes several navigation aids. Discovered map fragments reveal parts of the world, discovered locations add icons, and Guidance of Grace points in a general direction toward important content. Guidance of Grace is therefore not a substitute for remembering an arbitrary cave, item, or meeting place.

For a place you selected yourself, place a beacon on the map marker. Bandai Namco explains that the beacon creates an icon on the compass and a blue light that visually shows its position in the game world. The beacon gives you a practical field reference while riding or walking, while the map marker preserves the exact spot between sessions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the map to check elevation and approach routes when the blue light appears beyond a cliff or ravine. If the destination is underground or behind a sealed passage, the beacon can indicate the horizontal position while the local map and surrounding landmarks reveal the entrance.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: telescope pins, warp markers, and Footprint Mode

Nintendo’s official guidance for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom recommends using the telescope to look toward a distant point and placing a pin. The pin then gives you a map reference for a location you can investigate later. This is useful for a tower seen from a hill, a cave entrance noticed while gliding, or a structure that is easier to reach from another direction.

The Purah Pad can also provide a warp marker, and Nintendo lists Footprint Mode among the features that can be added. These functions are tied to the game’s progression as described in Nintendo’s guide, so a new save may not expose every option immediately. If a control shown in a guide is missing, advance the relevant quest or check the current in-game ability list rather than assuming the feature is broken.

When returning, use the pin as the destination and the terrain as the route planner. Vertical layers matter: a marker can be on the surface while the entrance is in a cave, in the sky, or below ground. Footprint Mode is most useful when you remember the general journey but not which canyon, island, or path led to the place.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: pins, a north-fixed minimap, and Hero’s Path

Nintendo’s official The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild guidance covers map pins and a north-fixed minimap option. A north-fixed map keeps north in the same screen position, which helps when you are matching a remembered direction to a visible landmark. Players who prefer the map to rotate can still navigate effectively, but they should check the compass before each long leg.

The optional Hero’s Path feature records the route from up to the last 200 hours of gameplay, according to Nintendo’s 2017 announcement for The Master Trials downloadable content. It can expose a road, valley, or shoreline you already crossed without realizing it. Because the display is a record of movement rather than a list of visited objectives, combine it with map icons and terrain when searching for a particular shrine, stable, or quest location.

A printed Breath of the Wild guidebook can serve as a paper reference: Nintendo’s guidebook information describes editions with a foldout Hyrule map containing place names and another map showing Korok locations. A paper map does not know your live position, update your save, or replace the game’s marker system, so treat it as an optional planning aid.

The Elder Scrolls Online: return through a discovered Wayshrine

The official new-player guide for The Elder Scrolls Online says that a previously visited Wayshrine can be selected for travel from anywhere on the map for a small amount of in-game gold. This is a specific ESO mechanic, not a rule that applies to every open-world game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the map to choose the Wayshrine nearest to the remembered location, pay the displayed fee, and then follow local roads or your own marker. If the destination is in another zone, first identify the correct region; traveling to the wrong Wayshrine can save distance on paper while leaving you on the opposite side of a mountain range or city.

ZELDA NOTES: an optional voice-navigation aid

Nintendo Support describes a ZELDA NOTES function in which selecting a map marker can start voice navigation while the device map updates the in-game position every few seconds. Availability depends on the supported app and game configuration. Confirm that your current title, account, device, and edition support the feature before relying on it for a journey.

Choosing the right option when you have forgotten the place

What you still remember Best first action What to check next
The exact spot or a clear map location Place a custom pin or beacon Compass, minimap, elevation, and the final approach
A landmark but not its map icon Search the map around the landmark’s region Legend symbols, discovered names, and nearby fast-travel points
The route but not the destination Open route history, Footprint Mode, or Hero’s Path if available Forks, dead ends, and the last point where the route approaches the landmark
Only the general region Fast-travel to the nearest unlocked hub Road connections, terrain barriers, and local map layers
Nothing except that you visited it Review discovered icons systematically Quest logs, completed activities, screenshots, and notes

The table describes decision priorities, not a promise that every title offers every tool. A game may have a map pin without a compass indicator, route history without destination names, or fast travel only after a point has been unlocked.

Common failure modes and how to recover

The marker is visible, but you cannot reach it

Zoom out and look for a traversable connection. Mountains, cliffs, rivers, walls, and loading-zone boundaries often force a long detour. Move the marker to the actual entrance if you placed it on an inaccessible rooftop, island interior, or upper ledge. In games with multiple elevations, check whether the map has separate surface, underground, or sky layers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The map marker disappeared

Check whether you exceeded the game’s marker limit, changed map layers, completed or abandoned an activity that owned the marker, or switched to a different character or save. Some temporary waypoints vanish when you reload or fast-travel. Recreate the pin and use a durable discovered icon or note for anything you expect to revisit repeatedly.

The compass points somewhere unexpected

Confirm that you selected the intended marker rather than a quest objective or Guidance of Grace direction. A compass may display several icons at once. Open the map, move the cursor over each symbol, and temporarily remove competing waypoints so the desired destination is unambiguous.

You remember the area but not the exact entrance

Use route history if the game provides it, then inspect the boundary between the route and unexplored terrain. Search for visual cues that survive memory: a waterfall, unusual rock formation, bridge, road fork, shrine silhouette, or settlement gate. Place a temporary pin at each candidate entrance and test the shortest approach before committing to a long detour.

Fast travel is unavailable

Read the on-screen restriction instead of repeatedly selecting the same point. Combat, interior spaces, scripted missions, encumbrance, or an undiscovered destination can disable travel. Leave the restricted area, finish the required unlock, or walk to a nearby discovered hub. If travel costs currency, compare the fee with the time and danger of the overland route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Habits that prevent the problem next time

  • Mark before investigating. The moment you spot a locked door, unusual structure, or resource field, place a pin before entering a fight or climbing away.
  • Use meaningful symbols. Keep a consistent convention for unfinished content, merchants, resources, and locations that need a second visit.
  • Write landmark notes. “North side of the ravine” is more useful than “important place,” especially after several hours away.
  • Clear completed pins. A clean map makes the remaining markers trustworthy.
  • Record a screenshot when the game lacks notes. Include the map scale, nearby named location, and marker symbol in the same image.
  • Learn the map legend early. Knowing which icons represent discovered points, quests, entrances, and services prevents false leads.
  • Check progression locks. Route history, warp markers, and DLC features may not be available at the start of a save.

What varies by game, edition, and update

Navigation instructions copied from another title can fail because the same button may open a map in one game and a quest log in another. Controls also vary between console layouts, PC key bindings, accessibility settings, and patches. Official guidance from Nintendo, Bandai Namco, and ZeniMax documents the named features, but it does not establish one universal behavior for all open-world games.

Before setting out, verify five details in the game’s own controls and legend: whether custom pins are allowed anywhere, where the marker appears, whether route history is enabled, which fast-travel points are unlocked, and whether travel has a fee or restriction. This quick check prevents you from searching for a feature your edition does not include.

A compact decision checklist

  • Do I know the destination well enough to place a pin?
  • Does the game show that pin on the compass, minimap, or in the world?
  • Is the map rotating, and would a north-fixed option help?
  • Can route history show the path I previously took?
  • Which discovered fast-travel point leaves the shortest final walk?
  • Am I on the correct map layer and elevation?
  • Have I checked the legend and removed competing markers?

Start with the most precise available evidence, then add the next tool only when the first one is insufficient: pin, compass, route history, and finally fast travel or systematic map search. That order preserves the destination instead of relying on a vague memory of the journey.
