Your Valheim world seed can usually be found in one of four places: the world-save metadata, a dedicated server’s console or log, the in-game console, or the F2 information overlay. The best method depends on whether you own the world files or only play on someone else’s server. Save a copy of the complete world folder before opening or moving anything, because newer Valheim worlds use versioned files that must stay together.

Choose the method that matches your access
Use the first method you can access. The world file is the most consistently described source because it does not depend on a console command being available in your particular build. Server owners can normally read the value during world startup. Players without file access should try the in-game console and then F2.

What the seed is—and what it is not
Valheim generates a world from a seed when that world is created. The seed is case-sensitive: two strings that differ only by capitalization represent different worlds. The seed does not change when you explore, build, defeat bosses, or move the save between computers.
Changing the seed is not an edit to an existing world. To use another seed, create a new world and enter the new value at creation time. Keep the original save if you want to preserve its map and structures.
A seed viewer can turn the code into a map, but it cannot recover a seed that you have not supplied. If you use an online viewer such as valheim-map.world, upload only a copy of the relevant metadata and consider whether the save contains information you do not want to share.
Method 1: Read the world metadata file
This is generally the most reliable approach when you control the computer or server files. The exact file format depends on when the world was created or last converted.

Find the save folder on Windows
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%userprofile%AppDataLocalLowIronGateValheimworlds_localin the address bar and press Enter. - If the installation uses a custom save location, look in the folder selected with Valheim’s
-savedirlaunch or server option instead.
Do not assume that a cloud-synced or dedicated-server world is in this local folder. A server may keep its saves on the host machine, and a host’s file manager or FTP account may be the only way to download them.
Find the save folder on Linux
- Open your file manager or terminal.
- Browse to
~/.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/worlds_local. - Check the custom directory if the server or launch configuration specifies
-savedir.
Hidden directories are not displayed by default in some Linux file managers. Enable hidden files before concluding that the folder is missing.
Read a legacy world
Older worlds are commonly described as a matching .fwl and .db pair. The .fwl file contains the world name and seed. Open a copy with a plain-text editor such as Notepad++ and inspect the second row; that row is where the seed is reported in the legacy format.
- Keep the
.fwland.dbfiles with the same base name. - Preserve capitalization. A seed with an uppercase letter is not interchangeable with the same letters in lowercase.
- Work on a duplicate rather than saving changes back into the original metadata.
- If the file looks like binary or unreadable data, you may be looking at a newer format; use the version-specific procedure below instead of editing it.
Read a Valheim 1.0-era world
Since Valheim 1.0, guides describe worlds as a folder under worlds_local, rather than one standalone pair. A typical folder contains versioned files such as _main.<n>.fwl2 and _main.<n>.db2, along with chunk files. The exact number represented by <n> depends on the save.

- Copy the entire world folder to a separate working location.
- Keep every
.fwl2,.db2, and chunk file together. - Do not rename an
.fwl2file to.fwl. The extensions identify different formats, and renaming does not convert the data. - If a compatible seed viewer accepts the newer folder, provide the complete folder or the files it explicitly requests. Do not delete “unrelated” chunk files before confirming what the viewer needs.
Older instructions that mention only one .fwl may not apply to a world saved by a newer build. If a viewer rejects the folder, use the server startup line or an in-game method rather than forcing a conversion.
Method 2: Read the dedicated-server console or log
Server owners can often obtain the seed without opening the world file. Restart the server and watch the startup output while the world loads. Search for the line beginning:
Initializing world generator seed:
The seed is the value after seed:. A number in parentheses or brackets on the same line is not the world seed; it is a separate generator value. Copy only the seed text, including its capitalization.
- Stop the server cleanly if your host panel provides a Stop command.
- Start it again and open the live console or startup log.
- Use the console search function, or download the log and search for
Initializing world generator. - Copy the value immediately following
seed:. - Store the value with the world name so you do not confuse it with another save.
The same startup line is commonly written to the server log. If you missed it in the live console, open the latest log generated by the restart. A host’s web file manager or FTP access may be required to download that file.
Startup text is version-sensitive. If the exact phrase is absent, search for world generator and seed separately, then compare the result with the world metadata. Do not treat an unrelated numeric identifier in the log as the seed.
Method 3: Use the in-game console
This method is convenient for a player who can join the world but may be unavailable on a server that blocks console commands. Community guides published in 2025 and 2026 report printseeds in several builds, while another guide reports that no console command prints the seed and recommends F2 instead. Treat the command as a quick test, not a guarantee.

Enable the console through Steam
- Open your Steam Library and right-click Valheim.
- Choose Properties.
- On the General tab, find Launch Options.
- Enter
-consoleexactly, including the leading hyphen. - Close the Properties window and launch the game.
If the console was already enabled, leave the existing options in place and add -console separated by a space. Remove it later if you do not want the console available on every launch.
Print the world seed
- Join the world whose seed you need.
- Press
F5to open the console. - Run
printseeds. - If that command is rejected, try the singular spelling
printseed, which some guides report for other builds. - Read the line labelled as the world seed. The output may also list dungeon seeds; those are not the main world seed.
On a multiplayer server, the command may require administrator privileges or may be disabled entirely. Ask the server owner for the startup log or a copy of the world metadata rather than attempting commands that alter the world.
If neither spelling is recognized, that does not prove the seed is unavailable. It means the command is not exposed in your current build or configuration. Use F2, the log, or the save-folder method.
Method 4: Check the F2 information overlay
One current guide reports that pressing F2 while inside a world displays the world name and seed alongside performance information such as FPS and ping. This is the fastest no-file method when it is present.
- Enter the target world.
- Press
F2. - Look for a field labelled Seed near the world name.
- Copy the value exactly, including uppercase and lowercase letters.
If F2 shows FPS and ping but no seed, follow the build-specific behavior described by your installation rather than assuming the world has no seed. Try the in-game console, then ask an administrator for the server startup line.
Method 5: Search Player.log
Older Steam-forum guidance recommends searching Valheim’s Player.log for Initializing world generator. When present, the line resembles:

- Valheim Boar Loves You quote. A perfect design for fans of the best selling Viking game.
- An amazing and unique design which is also perfect as a gift.
- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
seed:<seed> ( <number> )
Copy the text after seed:, not the number in parentheses. The log may contain entries from more than one session, so match the line to the date and world you loaded.
This is a fallback for older installations. Newer builds may omit the generator line, rotate logs, or store information differently. If a search returns no result, use the world metadata or server log instead of creating a seed from another number in the file.

The console opens, but the command is unknown
- Confirm that
-consoleis in Steam’s Launch Options, not typed into the game console itself. - Try both reported spellings,
printseedsandprintseed. - Check whether the server restricts commands to administrators.
- Use F2 or request the startup log if neither command exists in your build.
The seed appears to be a number in brackets
For the server and Player.log methods, the seed is the value immediately following seed:. The bracketed or parenthesized number is a separate value. Copying it will produce the wrong map.

You are probably using the newer versioned format. Keep the folder intact, including .fwl2, .db2, and chunk files. Do not rename extensions or mix files from different saves. Use a server startup log or an in-game method if the newer metadata cannot be read directly.
The file is not in the expected Windows or Linux path
- Check whether the server or launch configuration uses
-savedir. - Verify that you are looking at the machine running the world, not merely the computer used to connect to it.
- Enable hidden files on Linux.
- For hosted servers, use the provider’s file manager or FTP credentials supplied for that server.
The seed viewer produces a different map
- Check capitalization character by character.
- Confirm that you copied the world seed rather than a dungeon seed or bracketed generator number.
- Make sure the viewer and the world version are compatible.
- Verify that you selected the correct world folder when several saves have similar names.
- Do not infer that the game changed the seed; a world’s seed is fixed at creation.
Safe handling and verification checklist
Seed discovery is normally read-only, but careless file handling can damage a save. Before moving or opening anything, use this checklist:
- Stop a dedicated server before downloading or copying its active world.
- Keep an untouched backup of the complete world folder.
- Use a duplicate when opening metadata in a text editor.
- Preserve the original filenames, extensions, and capitalization.
- Record the seed with the world name and the date you verified it.
- Cross-check a value from one method against a second method when the map matters for a group server.
- Never replace a complete newer world folder with a single legacy file.
For a local world, the metadata method plus an F2 or console check is a practical confirmation. For a dedicated server, compare the startup line with the downloaded world folder. If the two values disagree, stop before making edits: you may have selected different worlds, different server instances, or a stale log.

Which method should you use?
You own a local single-player world
Start with the save folder. It avoids console permissions and gives you a durable record of the seed. If the world uses the newer folder format and the files are not readable, try F2 or the in-game console.
You administer a dedicated server
Read the startup console or latest log first because it requires no file-format interpretation. Download the complete world folder afterward if you need a backup or want to inspect it with a compatible viewer.
You are a player on someone else’s server
Try F2, then the console if the administrator allows it. If both fail, ask the owner for the seed or the startup-log line. You cannot reliably reconstruct a seed from the map, a dungeon seed, or a partial save.
You are planning a new world
Write down the exact seed before creating the world and preserve its capitalization. When sharing it with friends, place it in a code block or another copyable format so punctuation and letter case are not altered.
Bottom line
Find the seed in the world metadata when you have file access; read Initializing world generator seed: from a server startup log when you administer a server; try printseeds, printseed, or F2 when you are only a player. Treat console commands and log formats as build-dependent, keep Valheim 1.0-era world folders intact, and copy the seed exactly because capitalization matters.
