The U.S. Census Bureau’s USA Trade Online is the primary place to find official export figures for any U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands. Open the state-level exports product, select the state of origin, choose an HS or NAICS commodity grouping, set a destination (or World Total), select a measure such as value, and add monthly or annual periods. You can download the result as CSV, XLSX, or JSON.
To measure change, keep the state definition, commodity code, destination scope, measure, frequency, and data vintage constant. Calculate the absolute difference and percentage change from the downloaded values; for seasonal monthly data, compare the same month in different years rather than adjacent months.

Where can I find my state’s export numbers?
Start with the Census Bureau’s USA Trade Online and choose its state-level exports product. It covers all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The report builder lets you combine a state, commodity classification, destination country, measure, and time period instead of relying on a single headline total.

Census defines this as “the state where the goods begin its journey to the port of export.” That means the reported state is not necessarily the location of a company’s headquarters, the place where every component was manufactured, or the final destination of the goods. It identifies where the goods start their movement toward the export port.

For a repeatable series, use the Census International Trade API. The Census historical documentation identifies monthly API coverage from 2013 to the present for the relevant state-trade data. A Department of Commerce dashboard, TradeStats Express, is useful for a visual cross-check, but document the underlying Census series when precision or reproducibility matters.
What “your state’s exports” means
Origin of Movement, not company headquarters
State exports are assigned to the state where the shipment begins its journey to the port of export. A shipment may therefore be attributed to a distribution or transport location rather than the state where the exporting company is incorporated or where all manufacturing occurred. Do not substitute a port location or a State of Destination field when you need state exports.
State exports and state imports use different geography concepts
Exports use Origin of Movement. Imports use State of Destination, which is a separate attribution. Mixing the two concepts can produce a plausible-looking but incorrect comparison, especially for states that handle large volumes through ports or distribution centers.

State-export products support monthly, annual, and cumulative year-to-date periods, with exact historical availability depending on the selected report and series. Census documentation describes state-export coverage reaching back to the early 2000s in some products. The historical API page documents monthly coverage from 2013 onward. Check the period selector after choosing your commodity and geography rather than assuming every series has the same start date.
How to build a state-export report in USA Trade Online
- Open the state-level exports product. Begin a new report in USA Trade Online and select the state exports option, not a port report or an import product.
- Set State of Origin. Choose the state being studied. The field should explicitly identify the origin-of-movement state. If you are studying a territory covered by the system, select Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands in the same geography control.
- Choose a commodity system. Select HS for a customs-based product definition or NAICS for an industry-oriented grouping. Record the system, level, code, and description in your notes.
- Select the commodity code. Pick the exact HS or NAICS code needed for the question. A broad chapter or sector total and a detailed product code are not interchangeable, even when their descriptions sound similar.
- Choose the destination dimension. Select a named country for a bilateral question such as exports to Canada. Select World Total or all countries for the state’s overall export total. Keep this setting unchanged when comparing periods.
- Select measures. Use total value for a dollar trend. Add shipping weight or transportation-related measures only when they answer a separate question about physical volume or shipping activity.
- Configure time. Select annual periods for a clean long-run comparison. Add monthly periods when you need seasonality, a shock, or a turning point. Use cumulative year-to-date only when you label it clearly as YTD.
- Run and inspect the table. Before interpreting a number, check the state label, period, commodity code and description, destination, measure, units, and whether the period is monthly, annual, or cumulative.
- Export the result. Save the table in JSON, CSV, or XLSX. Keep the unedited download and a record of every selection so another person can reproduce the query.
HS or NAICS: which classification should you use?
| Choice | Best for | What to record | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| HS (Harmonized System) | A specific traded product identified through customs classification | HS level, complete code, and description | The same product may appear differently at another level of aggregation; do not mix six-digit detail with a broader total. |
| NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) | An industry-oriented view of goods associated with a sector | NAICS level, complete code, and description | An industry grouping is not the same thing as a single physical product or a company’s complete output. |
State reports commonly provide HS at six-digit detail and NAICS at four-digit state level, but the available levels depend on the selected product. If two analysts use different systems, their totals can differ without either calculation being wrong. State the classification and code in every chart title, table heading, or data file name.
How to choose destination, measure, and time period
Destination country
Use a named destination for a country-to-country question. Use World Total or all countries for the state’s overall exports. A change in destination scope can look like a growth or decline even when the underlying shipments are unchanged, so do not compare a bilateral series with a world-total series.

Value, weight, and transportation measures
Total value is the usual headline measure and is suitable for a dollar trend. Shipping weight can help answer a quantity-oriented question, while transportation measures describe movement or shipping characteristics rather than the value of goods. If you publish more than one measure, label each unit and avoid treating weight growth as equivalent to value growth.
Monthly, annual, and year-to-date periods
- Annual: Use complete calendar years for a stable long-run comparison.
- Monthly: Use when seasonality, a disruption, or a turning point matters. Compare the same month year over year when seasonal patterns are likely.
- Cumulative YTD: Use for an in-year progress measure, and identify the ending month and the comparison window explicitly.
The latest month may be provisional. Current periods can be revised, so recheck the source before publishing a narrative that depends on the newest observation.
Can I download state export data to Excel?
Yes. The current USA Trade Online user guide lists JSON, CSV, and XLSX downloads. CSV is convenient for spreadsheets and statistical tools, XLSX preserves a workbook format, and JSON is useful for scripts and repeatable pipelines.
Download and preserve an audit trail
- Export the report in the format your analysis requires.
- Keep the original file unchanged; perform cleaning in a separate copy or worksheet.
- Save a query log containing the access date, state of origin, HS or NAICS system and code, destination, measure, frequency, and period range.
- Include the data vintage or revision date in the file name or metadata.
- When sharing a chart, retain the underlying download so a reader can check the displayed values.
In a spreadsheet, keep dimensions in separate columns rather than embedding them only in a chart title. This prevents an accidental mix of states, destinations, or commodity levels when you append new periods.
How to track changes over time
Hold the comparison axes constant
For every period in a trend, keep these settings identical:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Geography definition: Origin of Movement and the same state
- Commodity system, level, code, and description

If any axis changes, treat the result as a new series and explain the break instead of presenting it as a continuous trend.

Calculate absolute and percentage change
For an earlier value E and a later value L:
- Absolute change:
L − E - Percentage change:
(L − E) / E × 100
If the earlier value is zero, report the absolute change and state that a percentage rate is undefined. Do not replace a zero denominator with an arbitrary small number.
For an illustrative calculation, a move from $120 million to $150 million is an absolute increase of $30 million and a percentage increase of 25 percent. This arithmetic example is not a reported state statistic; apply the formulas to the values in your own downloaded series.
Choose the right comparison for the frequency
| Data frequency | Preferred comparison | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Annual | Full calendar year versus the preceding full calendar year | Avoids comparing a partial year with a complete year. |
| Monthly | Same month year over year when seasonality is likely | Controls for recurring seasonal shipping patterns. |
| YTD | Same ending month versus the same ending month in the prior year | Keeps the number of months comparable. |
Label every result as monthly, annual, or YTD. A January value, a January-through-June YTD total, and a full-year total cannot be read as equivalent observations.

Using the Census International Trade API for recurring pulls
The International Trade API is the better option when you need a scheduled monthly retrieval, a reproducible data pipeline, or many states and codes at once. The historical documentation identifies monthly coverage from 2013 to the present for the relevant state-trade data.
Design a repeatable API workflow
- Define the same dimensions you would use in USA Trade Online: state of origin, commodity system and code, destination, measure, and period.
- Write those selections into a configuration file or documented script rather than relying on manual memory.
- Retrieve one period and compare its labels and units with a USA Trade Online download.
- Store the raw API response together with the retrieval date and query parameters.
- Append new periods only after checking that the code descriptions, units, and geography labels have not changed.
- Recalculate derived changes when Census revises an earlier period.
Use USA Trade Online to explore and validate a series, then move to the API when the same query must run repeatedly. The API does not eliminate the need to document classification, destination, frequency, and revisions.
Where TradeStats Express fits
TradeStats Express is a Department of Commerce dashboard for state exports and imports by product and partner using Census-published data. Its visual interface can be a convenient cross-check or a quick way to explore patterns. For a published number, keep the exact Census state series, code, destination, measure, and period in your notes so another analyst can reproduce it even if dashboard defaults change.

Comparing two states fairly
A state-to-state comparison requires more than selecting two names. Apply the same settings to both states:
- Use Origin of Movement for each state.
- Use the same HS or NAICS system, level, and code.
- Use the same destination scope, such as World Total or the same named country.
- Use the same measure and units.
- Use matching monthly, annual, or YTD periods.
- Use the same data vintage or revision date where possible.
Differences in geography, product grouping, destination, or period can be larger than the economic difference you are trying to measure. If a state’s product mix is better represented by a different classification, present that as a separate, explicitly qualified analysis rather than silently changing the code.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Using a port instead of the state of origin
Symptom: The result reflects activity at a major export port and does not match the state’s production story.
Fix: Return to the state-level exports product and select State of Origin. Confirm that the report uses Origin of Movement.
Mixing HS and NAICS totals
Symptom: Two totals for the “same” sector disagree.
Fix: Check the classification system, code, and aggregation level. Report them separately or choose one system for the complete time series.
Best Value
Comparing different destination scopes
Symptom: A bilateral series is compared with a World Total series.
Fix: Re-run both periods with the same country selection.
Comparing a partial period with a full period
Symptom: A current YTD total is described as a year-over-year annual change.
Fix: Compare the same ending month in both years and label the result YTD, or wait for complete annual data.
Interpreting the newest month as final
Symptom: A story changes after a later download.
Fix: Mark the latest month as provisional, record the download date, and recheck the source before publication.
Reporting a percentage change from zero
Symptom: A spreadsheet returns an error or an enormous rate.
Fix: Publish the absolute change and say that the percentage rate is undefined because the earlier value was zero.

A practical publication checklist
- Does the headline identify the state and whether the number is monthly, annual, or YTD?
- Is the geography explicitly Origin of Movement?
- Are the HS or NAICS system, level, code, and description recorded?
- Is the destination World Total or a named country, and is that choice consistent?
- Is the measure value, weight, or another transportation measure?
- Are units shown next to the number?
- Are the comparison periods equivalent?
- Have you retained the raw CSV, XLSX, or JSON download and query settings?
- Have you noted the data vintage and warned readers if the latest month is provisional?
- If a percentage change is shown, was the earlier value nonzero?
Bottom line for finding and monitoring state exports
Use USA Trade Online as the official starting point: select the state by Origin of Movement, define the product with a recorded HS or NAICS code, choose the destination and measure, and download the periods you need. Keep every comparison axis fixed, use same-month or same-window comparisons when seasonality or YTD timing matters, and preserve the raw export and query settings. Move to the International Trade API for recurring pulls, and use TradeStats Express as a visual cross-check rather than a substitute for documenting the underlying Census series.
