The quickest way to find a Samsung Galaxy phone’s model and serial number is Settings → About phone. On a Galaxy tablet, use Settings → About tablet. If your device uses older software, look for Status inside that section. Samsung notes that menu names can differ by model, carrier and software version, so choose the equivalent About device or Status screen when the wording is different.
This guide explains what each identifier means, where to look when Settings is unavailable, and how to retrieve the details from a Galaxy with a damaged or unusable touchscreen.

Samsung’s primary method works on most Galaxy phones and tablets:

- On a phone, tap About phone. On a tablet, tap About tablet.
- Read the entries for the model number and serial number. The same page may also show an IMEI or MEID.

If you see Status instead
Some older Galaxy devices place identifying details under Status within the About section. If About phone or About tablet opens a page without the numbers, tap Status and look there. The exact hierarchy varies across device models, carrier editions and software versions; an equivalent label such as About device may appear instead.
Phone and tablet labels are different
A Galaxy phone normally uses About phone, while a Galaxy tablet normally uses About tablet. Selecting the matching label prevents you from searching unrelated settings pages.
Know which number you need
Model, serial and IMEI/MEID are different identifiers. Copy the requested field exactly rather than substituting one for another.

Samsung says the IMEI (or MEID) and serial number are unique to each phone or tablet. They are not interchangeable with the model number. If a form specifically asks for an IMEI, entering the model or serial number will not satisfy it. Samsung’s explanation of these identifiers is included on its US support page.
Other places to find the details
Use these alternatives if the device will not open Settings, the screen is difficult to use, or you need to identify a device that is not currently in your possession.
1. Inspect the device
Samsung says some devices have small identifying text on the back. Turn the device over and look for model or serial information in the printed fine text. Do not assume every Galaxy has this marking: many newer designs do not place all identifiers on the exterior, and text may be difficult to read without good lighting.

2. Check the original box
The retail packaging may have a label listing the model and serial number. If you have several Galaxy boxes, match the label to the device’s color, storage description or other identifying information before recording the number. Keep the label with the correct device in your records.

Samsung lists the carrier’s website or account details as another possible source. Sign in to the account used for the device and open its equipment, line or device-information area. The exact page name belongs to the carrier, so it may not use Samsung’s wording. If the account shows only an IMEI or line identifier, do not treat that value as the serial number unless it is explicitly labeled that way.
4. Look at the receipt or contract
A sales receipt or contract can contain the model and an identifying device number. Search the itemized section rather than relying on a store order number, invoice number or phone number. Those transaction references identify the purchase or account, not necessarily the Galaxy unit.
5. Use Samsung Members
On Samsung’s US guidance, open the Support tab in the Samsung Members app and tap the device name. If the app is installed and the device is registered, it may display identifying information without requiring you to navigate through the main Settings page. App layout and available information can vary by region, account and device.
6. Try the *#06# code when supported
Open the Phone app and enter *#06#. Samsung says this may display IMEI and serial details, but the code works only when supported by the carrier. It is therefore an optional fallback, not a guaranteed method. If nothing appears, return to About phone or use one of the physical or account records above. The code may show an IMEI even when the serial number is not displayed, so read each label carefully.
7. Check under a removable battery
On Galaxy models designed with a removable battery, identifying information may be printed under or below the battery. Power the device off, remove the battery only as the model’s design permits, and inspect the label. Samsung warns that most newer devices do not have removable batteries. Never pry open a device whose battery is not designed to be removed: Samsung says doing so can damage the device and void its warranty. Finding the number when the screen is broken
A cracked display does not always prevent access to Settings. Samsung UK says you may still be able to control the device by connecting a USB mouse or by connecting it to a TV. This is troubleshooting guidance rather than a universal accessory guarantee: compatibility depends on the Galaxy model, the type of damage and the adapters or display equipment available.
If touch input fails but the display works
- Connect a compatible USB mouse to the Galaxy using the connection method supported by your model.
- Use the pointer to open Settings, then About phone or About tablet.
- Copy the model and serial entries exactly as shown.
If the display is too damaged to read, a TV connection may provide a larger view when the device and required connection support it. Once the screen is visible, navigate to the same About page. Samsung does not state that every Galaxy model supports every mouse, adapter or TV connection, so do not force a connector or assume a connection will work.
If the device will not unlock
Settings and Samsung Members require access to the device. If you cannot unlock it, use the box, the carrier account, a receipt or contract, or exterior markings instead. If the phone is lost or stolen, do not attempt to bypass its lock; use the account and purchase records available to you and follow the relevant carrier or support process.

A practical lookup checklist
Use this order to avoid confusing one identifier with another:
- Open Settings → About phone (phone) or Settings → About tablet (tablet).
- If the entries are not visible, open Status or the equivalent About device page.
- Write down the model number and serial number in separate fields.
- Record the IMEI or MEID separately if a carrier, support agent or lost-device process requests it.
- If Settings is unavailable, check the device’s exterior, original box, carrier account, receipt or contract.
- Open Samsung Members and use Support → device name when that app is available.
- Use
*#06#only as an optional carrier-supported method for IMEI or serial details. - For a broken touchscreen, consider a compatible USB mouse or TV connection; do not remove a non-removable battery.
How to copy and store the numbers safely
Transcribe labels, not positions
Read the text label beside each value. A page may place model number, serial number and IMEI close together, and a long string of letters and digits is easy to misattribute. Preserve capital letters, hyphens and leading zeroes when copying.
Make a private record
Store the model and serial number with your purchase information in a secure location. A private note can help when requesting service or proving which unit you own. Avoid posting a full serial number or IMEI publicly in a forum, screenshot or social-media post; share it only with the carrier, manufacturer or service provider that needs it.

Photograph labels carefully
If you use the box or an exterior label, take a clear photograph and check every character against the printed text. Reflections, tiny type and similar characters can produce transcription errors. Keep the image private because it may contain device identifiers.

“About phone” is missing
Look for About device, About tablet or a similarly named entry in Settings. Samsung’s labels vary with model, carrier and software version. Use Settings search for “About” or “Status” if the main list is long.
The page shows an IMEI but no serial number
Check the rest of the About page and then open Status if it is available. If the serial number still does not appear, use the box, receipt, carrier account, Samsung Members or the device label. Do not replace the missing serial number with the displayed IMEI.
The *#06# code does nothing
Samsung says the code depends on carrier support. Use Settings or another source instead. A non-working code does not mean the device lacks an IMEI or serial number.
The printed number is unreadable
Try brighter, indirect light and compare the characters with the box or purchase record. If the exterior label is damaged, use About phone/About tablet, Samsung Members or your carrier account rather than guessing.

The device has a non-removable battery
Do not open the case to search for a label. Samsung warns that removing a battery that is not designed to be removed can damage the device and void its warranty. Use the Settings route or an external record instead.
When each identifier matters
Support and repairs
A support agent may ask for the model number to select the correct instructions and the serial number to identify the individual unit. Provide both when requested, keeping their labels distinct.
Carrier and connectivity matters
Carrier systems commonly use an IMEI or MEID for a phone or other communication device. If a carrier asks for that identifier, provide the field explicitly labeled IMEI or MEID rather than the model or serial number.
Lost or stolen devices
Samsung notes that IMEI/MEID and serial information may be requested when dealing with a lost or stolen device. Keep these details in a private record before an emergency; do not publish them openly.
Promotions and registrations
Samsung says identifiers may be requested for promotions. Follow the form’s exact label and eligibility instructions, and enter the requested number only through the legitimate manufacturer, carrier or retailer process.
Why your menu may not match a screenshot
There is no single screen layout shared by every Galaxy device. Samsung’s US and UK support pages both indicate that the route and available labels can vary. Carrier customizations, software revisions and the distinction between phone and tablet menus can move the information or change its wording. The reliable principle is to start in Settings and find the device-information page—About phone, About tablet, About device or Status—rather than relying on a particular screenshot.
If you are helping someone remotely, ask whether they are using a phone or tablet, which labels they can see in Settings, and whether the touchscreen works. That information determines whether to direct them to About phone/About tablet, Status, Samsung Members, a physical label or an account record.
