Start at Vote.gov, choose your state or territory, and follow the link to that jurisdiction’s election office. Vote.gov is managed by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC). It points you to official state sources for registration, polling places, deadlines, identification rules, early voting and mail ballots; it does not register you or maintain your registration record itself.
Use the election office for your state, county, parish, city or territory as the final authority. Treat unsolicited calls, texts, emails and social posts as unverified—especially when they create urgency, request personal or payment information, or claim that your voter record was hacked or changed.

The safest habit is to separate finding information from acting on a message. Find the office independently, verify the election and your address, then follow only the instructions published there. Keep that official contact information so you can check a claim without returning to the original message.
1. Begin with Vote.gov, not a message in your inbox
Use the national starting point
Open a browser yourself and enter Vote.gov. Do not begin by clicking a registration or polling-place link sent by an unknown person. Vote.gov is a trusted starting point managed by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission. Its purpose is to route you to the official election website for the state or territory where you are registered or want to register.

The site is a directory and guide, not a national voter database. Registration, registration-status checks and election logistics are completed through the state or territorial system that Vote.gov identifies. If a page claiming to be Vote.gov asks you to complete the entire process on an unrelated commercial domain, stop and start over by typing the address yourself.
Select the state or territory that controls your election
Choose your current state or territory from the selector. The resulting page can provide links for:
- Registering to vote.
- Checking whether your registration is active.
- Updating a name, address or party affiliation where permitted.
- Finding or replacing a voter-registration card.
There is no single national registration deadline. Some jurisdictions allow registration on Election Day; others require an application days or weeks earlier. Use the deadline displayed by your jurisdiction for the specific election rather than relying on a national calendar, an old article or a social-media graphic.
Read the page for the election you actually intend to vote in. A primary, runoff, special election and general election can use different deadlines or procedures. If you recently moved, do not assume that updating a record for one election automatically answers every question about another jurisdiction.
Confirm that the page belongs to the right jurisdiction
Election rules are local as well as statewide. A county or municipal election office may provide the address, hours and ballot information that a state page cannot determine until you enter your residence. Check that the page identifies your state, county or municipality and provides an official office name and contact method.
Save the exact official address or bookmark it after you have reached it from Vote.gov. A bookmark you created yourself is safer than a link forwarded by another person, but revisit the page when your address or the election date changes.
2. Verify every detail with your state or local election office
The Federal Election Commission (FEC) identifies the state or local election office as the best resource for registration and polling-location questions. Vote.gov likewise directs voters to those offices because requirements differ by state and territory.

Use the official status-check tool linked from your state or territory page. Review the name, address, party information (if your jurisdiction records it) and status shown for the election you plan to vote in. If the record is missing, inactive or incorrect, follow the correction or registration instructions on that same government site.
Check the deadline attached to the election, not merely the date you happen to find in a search result. A primary, runoff, special election and general election can have different deadlines. A status page may also tell you whether an address change requires a new application or can be completed online. If the site directs you to contact a county or municipal office, use that office’s published information rather than guessing which office handles your record.
Polling place, hours and accessibility
Your polling place is determined by your registered address and the election. Confirm the complete street address through the election office, then check opening and closing times, early-voting dates and any available accessibility information. Do not assume that a familiar location from a previous election is still assigned to you.

Look for the office’s instructions for what to do if your name is not on the list. Official information may include provisional-ballot procedures and the deadline for resolving a registration problem. Read those instructions before Election Day so you know which office can answer a question and what documentation, if any, the jurisdiction describes.

Identification rules vary. The official state or local page should explain which forms of identification are accepted, whether an alternative is available, and what happens if you do not have the requested document. It should also describe language assistance, accessible voting equipment or other services offered in your jurisdiction when applicable.
Do not rely on a generic list copied into a text message. Even a correctly named document may be treated differently in another state or in another election. The election office’s current instructions are the ones to follow.
Early, absentee and mail voting
Use the election office—not an unsolicited form or social post—for eligibility, application deadlines, ballot-return instructions and signature or witness requirements. Confirm whether the office must receive the ballot by a deadline or whether a postmark is sufficient under that jurisdiction’s rules. Follow the return method and tracking instructions supplied by the office.
Keep the application and return deadlines separate in your notes. A message that correctly states one date can still give an incorrect date for the other. If the office offers a ballot-status tracker, reach it through the official site and check the election and address information shown there.
Sample ballots and election-specific instructions
A sample ballot can show the contests and questions that will appear in your precinct. Verify its election date and precinct before using it to plan your vote. Federal law treats sample ballots, election dates and polling hours, voting instructions, provisional-ballot instructions, voting-rights information, and laws against fraud and misrepresentation as voting information that must be publicly posted by appropriate state or local officials at polling places on federal Election Day.
A sample ballot is for planning; it is not proof that a forwarded image is current or belongs to your precinct. Compare the heading, election date and jurisdiction with the official page before sharing or printing it.
3. How to tell whether a voter-registration message is a scam
Recognize pressure and dramatic claims
Be suspicious when an unsolicited message:
- Insists you must act immediately or lose your right to vote.
- Claims your registration was hacked, deleted or secretly changed without giving you a verifiable election-office contact.
- Requests a Social Security number, driver’s-license details, date of birth, payment, password or other information through an unfamiliar channel.
- Uses threats, shame or political pressure instead of explaining a neutral election procedure.
- Provides voting instructions that conflict with the state or local election office.
- Comes from an unfamiliar number, address or social account, even if its logo or signature resembles a government agency.
A polished design, a familiar name or a message that mentions your neighborhood does not prove authenticity. Scammers can copy logos, names and public information. A message can also combine a real election date with a false polling address or a fake registration form.
Urgency is a warning sign, not evidence that the claim is true. Pause, close the message and verify the issue through the office you found independently.

Inspect the destination before you open it
Election offices often use a .gov domain. CISA and the FBI advise looking for that government domain or for a site you already know belongs to your state or local election office. A different ending does not automatically prove fraud, but an unfamiliar site that solicits voting information deserves caution.

Do not rely on the link supplied in a suspicious message. Type the known government address yourself, use a bookmark you created from an official page, or begin again at Vote.gov. Check the browser’s address bar for misspellings, extra words, deceptive subdomains and a domain that is not the state or local office you intended to visit.
A secure connection symbol in the browser does not establish that the publisher is an election office; it only describes the connection. Ownership and jurisdiction still have to be verified.
Compare the claim with an independent official source
When a message says your polling place, deadline or eligibility has changed, open the election office through Vote.gov and look for the same notice. Confirm the election date, your jurisdiction and the version of the instructions. If the two sources disagree, contact the office using the phone number or email published on its official website rather than replying to the message.
Recommended Free Tools
CISA and the FBI state: Visit your state and local elections office websites for accurate information about the elections process. Many of these offices have websites that use a ‘.gov’ domain, indicating they are an official government site.
The FTC’s voter-registration-scam guidance likewise recommends contacting the local election office or using the Election Assistance Commission’s National Mail Voter Registration Form information instead of sharing information with an unknown person. The form information is a route to a legitimate process, not a reason to disclose data to the sender of an unsolicited message.
4. A five-part test for conflicting voting information
Do not decide based on which page looks more professional. Evaluate both sources against the same checks:
| Check | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Authority | Is the publisher your state, county, parish, municipality or territorial election office, or an unknown sender? |
| Jurisdiction | Does it apply to your residence and the election in which you will vote? |
| Date and version | Does it identify the correct election date and current instructions? |
| Contact | Does it provide a verifiable office contact that you can locate independently? |
| Information requested | Does it ask for unnecessary personal or payment information instead of directing you to an official process? |
Authority and jurisdiction come first. A genuine government page for another county can still be wrong for you, and an old page from your own county can be outdated. Next check the election date and the page’s current instructions. Finally, ask why the page needs any information at all and whether the request matches the normal process described by the election office.

5. What to do if you clicked, replied or shared information
Stop the conversation and verify separately
Do not continue a suspicious exchange to “fix” the problem. Close the message, stop using its link and open the official election site independently. If you entered information into an unfamiliar page, do not provide additional details to anyone who contacts you claiming to be able to repair the record.
Do not call a number supplied only in the message. Locate the office’s contact information through Vote.gov, the official state or local site or the FEC directory. Explain that you may have submitted information to an unverified site and ask what official procedure applies.

A suspicious message is not proof that a record changed. Let the official status tool and election staff determine whether any action is needed.
Preserve evidence
Before deleting the message, save screenshots and retain:
- The complete message, including its date and time.
- The sender’s phone number or email address.
- The exact URL or attachment name.
- Any caller-ID information, social-media account and profile link.
- What the sender claimed and what information, if any, you provided.
Do not publicly repost a malicious link. Include the preserved details when reporting it to election officials or law enforcement. Keeping the original wording helps officials distinguish an incorrect rumor from a coordinated attempt to mislead voters.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Where to report deceptive voting information
Start with the election office
USA.gov advises reporting suspected voter fraud to your state, local or territorial election office. That office is also the appropriate first contact for deceptive instructions about the manner, time or place of voting, intimidation, suppression or a suspicious registration solicitation. Use the office’s independently verified website or published contact information.
Include the affected election and jurisdiction, when you received the message, how it reached you and whether you know of other recipients. Ask whether the office wants the full message, screenshots or the URL in a particular format.
Use federal channels when the conduct may be a federal election crime
CISA and the FBI identify election officials and federal law-enforcement channels for election-security concerns. A state or local office can help route a report; the FBI or Department of Justice may be appropriate when the allegation involves a federal election crime or a broader coordinated operation. Provide the preserved evidence and explain the election, jurisdiction and date involved.
Do not wait to establish the sender’s motive before reporting a potentially deceptive instruction. Report what you can document and let the appropriate authority assess the legal issue and urgency.
Report facts, not assumptions
Describe exactly what you received, who sent it, what it told voters to do and why it conflicts with the official instructions. Distinguish an incorrect claim from a confirmed attempt to commit fraud. This makes it easier for officials to assess urgency and warn affected voters.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems7. A safe workflow for every election
- Type Vote.gov into your browser or open a bookmark you created from it.
- Select your state or territory and open the linked registration or election-office page.
- Check registration status and confirm your address for the specific election.
- Record the official deadlines, polling location, hours, identification rules and early- or mail-voting instructions that apply to you.
- If a message gives different information, do not click its link. Compare its claim with the official page and call the listed election office if anything remains unclear.
- Save the official page or office contact, but recheck it if the election date or your address changes.
- Preserve and report suspicious messages instead of forwarding them.
This sequence works because each step narrows the question: national directory, state or territory, then the local office responsible for your address and precinct. It also creates an independent path back to the answer if a message later tries to redirect you.
Best Value
8. Questions to ask before trusting any voting website
- Which government office owns this page?
- Does the jurisdiction match my current residence?
- Is the information for the correct election date?
- Can I verify the office’s contact details through Vote.gov or another official directory?
- Does the page explain the procedure, or is it mainly trying to collect personal or payment information?
- Does the instruction agree with the state or local election office?
If you cannot answer the first four questions, stop and verify before entering information or sharing the page. A page that answers them clearly should still be checked for the specific election date and your precinct.
9. Why local verification matters
Election administration is distributed. A national guide can point you to the correct authority, but it cannot determine your precinct, polling hours, ballot style or eligibility details without the state and local rules. The same apparent question—such as whether you can vote by mail—can have a different answer in another jurisdiction or for another election.
That is why an official-looking national post, campaign message or older government page is not enough on its own. The reliable chain is Vote.gov to your state or territory, then to the responsible local election office when the question concerns your address or precinct.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When in doubt, use the office’s independently published contact information and ask a precise question: which election, which address and which deadline? Specific details help staff give the answer that applies to your ballot rather than a general answer for the state.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I check my voter registration?
Start at Vote.gov, select your state or territory, and use the registration-status link provided there. The state or territorial system—not Vote.gov itself—holds the status record and explains how to correct an error.
How do I find my polling place and hours?
Use the state or local election office linked from Vote.gov. Enter or confirm your current address and the specific election, then verify the street address, opening and closing times, early-voting dates and accessibility information.
Is a voter-registration text or email real?
Treat an unsolicited message as unverified if it creates urgency, requests personal or payment information, claims your record was hacked or changed, or comes from an unfamiliar sender. Do not click its link; type Vote.gov or your known election-office address yourself and compare the claim.
Does a .gov address prove every election message is legitimate?
A .gov domain generally indicates an official government site, but still check that it belongs to the correct state, county, municipality or territory and covers the correct election. A secure connection or copied government logo alone is not enough.
What should I do if two voting websites disagree?
Compare authority, jurisdiction, election date and version, independently verifiable contact information, and whether either page requests unnecessary personal or payment information. Resolve the conflict with the election office listed through Vote.gov or the FEC state-office directory.
Where do I report deceptive voting instructions or suspected voter fraud?
Report suspected voter fraud, intimidation, suppression or deceptive instructions to your state, local or territorial election office using independently verified contact information. CISA, the FBI or the Department of Justice may be appropriate for election-security concerns or possible federal election crimes.
What evidence should I save before reporting a scam?
Keep the complete message, date and time, sender number or address, URL or attachment name, caller-ID or social-account details, screenshots, the exact claim and any information you provided. Do not publicly repost a malicious link.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What if I already entered information on a suspicious site?
Stop communicating through that message, verify your record through the official status tool reached from Vote.gov, and contact the election office using independently found details. Do not give additional information to anyone who claims they can repair the record.
The Bottom Line
Use Vote.gov as your starting point, then trust the state or local election office for the details. Verify the jurisdiction and election date, type official addresses yourself, and treat urgent unsolicited voting messages as untrusted. Preserve and report deceptive instructions instead of forwarding them.
