How to Find Your Next Read When You Don’t Know What to Read

You do not need a perfect genre label or a half-formed title to find a good book. Start with any clue you can name—a mood, a subject, a book or author you once enjoyed, the format you want, or something you definitely want to avoid. Turn that clue into a short list of story qualities, use one discovery route, and compare only a few candidates against what you want to read today.

The goal is not to let an algorithm declare your one perfect book. It is to reduce an unlimited catalog to two or three plausible choices, then verify the tone, pace, subject, length, format and availability yourself.

Start with the clue you actually have

When people ask “What should I read next?” they often assume they must first identify a genre. You can begin with much less. A remembered scene, a favorite author, a desire for a funny audiobook, curiosity about a historical event, or a wish to avoid violence is enough to start.

  • “I want something tense but not terrifying.”
  • “I liked the family relationships in a recent novel and want more of that.”
  • “I need a short nonfiction audiobook for commuting.”
  • “I am curious about urban design, but I do not want a textbook.”
  • “I want a completely different subject from my last three books.”

If you can name a book, author or series, that is a particularly useful starting point for a read-alike search. If you cannot, mood, topic and an avoidance preference work just as well. EBSCO’s May 2026 readers’ advisory competencies treat genre, appeal and theme as practical vocabulary for describing what a reader likes; you can use that vocabulary informally rather than memorizing labels.

Translate the clue into story elements

Discovery works better when you turn a vague wish into two or three observable qualities. “I want something like that last book” might mean the writing style, a dual timeline, a hopeful ending, a rural setting or a fast plot—not the book’s official genre.

Story element Question to ask yourself Useful terms to try
Genre or blend What broad shelf or combination sounds right? Mystery, romance, memoir, science fiction, literary suspense, history
Appeal What made the previous experience enjoyable? Witty, atmospheric, character-driven, plot-heavy, reflective, immersive
Theme or subject What idea, problem or setting interests me? Friendship, migration, climate, cooking, disability, space exploration
Tone and mood How should the book feel while I read it? Comforting, urgent, strange, hopeful, dark, playful, calm
Pace How much momentum can I handle now? Page-turner, steady, episodic, slow-building, contemplative
Length and format What fits my time and attention? Short novel, long series, print, ebook, audiobook, large print
Avoidances What would make me abandon it? No graphic violence, no animal harm, no romance, no unresolved ending

You do not need an exact match on every row. Two strong matches and one acceptable compromise are usually enough to create a useful shortlist. Treat these as search prompts, not promises about what a book will feel like.

A quick clue-to-query worksheet

Before opening an app or catalog, complete this sentence: “I want a [tone or mood] book about [topic or theme], with [pace or appeal], in [format or length], and without [deal-breaker].” You can leave blanks. For example, “I want a hopeful book about migration, character-driven and available as audio, without graphic violence” is already a workable request. “I want something strange and short” is enough for a first pass.

Separate what is essential from what is negotiable. An audiobook may be essential because you read while driving; a particular genre label may be negotiable if the emotional effect is right. Mark one or two non-negotiables and let the remaining preferences guide rather than block the search. This prevents a filter from becoming so narrow that it returns nothing.

Choose the discovery route that matches your clue

Use read-alikes when you have a favorite

A favorite title, author or series gives a service something concrete to compare. Look for “read-alike” or “readers’ advisory” tools, then inspect why each suggestion was made. A recommendation may share the setting but not the pace, or the subject but not the emotional tone.

For a more structured search, EBSCO describes NoveList Plus as a library-oriented database with expert suggestions for books, authors, series and audiobooks, plus searches by appeal, genre and theme. Its current product page states 375,000-plus fiction titles and 314,000-plus nonfiction titles; those are EBSCO’s stated database counts, not independently audited totals. Access depends on whether your library subscribes.

When you search from a favorite, identify what you want repeated. You can ask for another book by the same author, another title with a similar appeal, or a work that changes one element while preserving another. “Another family saga” is broad; “the same intimate family tension, but with a faster pace and a contemporary setting” gives a reader or database something more useful to work with.

Use mood and topic filters when you cannot name a title

If your clue is “gentle,” “funny,” “weird” or “about gardening,” a mood or topic search is more useful than forcing yourself into a genre. The StoryGraph’s official site describes personalized recommendations, mood and topic discovery, mixed preference filters, custom tags and lists, and a queue for upcoming reads. Enter only the preferences you can state confidently; excessive filters can hide worthwhile near-matches.

Because recommendation quality can vary by reader and by query, regard the results as candidates. Read the description, check the length and format, and remove anything that conflicts with your current mood. If a mood word produces an odd result, try a neighboring word—“comforting” instead of “light,” or “tense” instead of “dark”—and compare the descriptions rather than assuming the label is universal.

Ask a librarian when the request is personal or difficult to phrase

A short conversation can reveal the distinction an automated filter misses. Tell the librarian one book you liked, one element you want repeated, one element you want changed, and any content you want to avoid. You can ask for three choices rather than an exhaustive list.

The Public Library Association’s readers’ advisory resources identify recommendation and reading-tracking resources, but services differ by library. Some libraries offer a web form, email response, appointment or a dedicated readers’ advisory desk; others provide help only during opening hours. Ask what is available instead of assuming every branch offers the same service.

Readers’ advisory is meant to be collaborative. The American Library Association’s Booklist page credits Kansas City Public Library Director of Reader Services Kaite Stover with this description: Modern readers’ advisory is a relationship driven practice that positions every library staff member as a catalyst for patrons’ deeper engagement with reading and with the library. You are allowed to correct the first suggestion and explain what did not fit.

Give useful feedback after a miss. “I did not like it” becomes actionable when you add “the narrator sounded detached,” “the middle slowed down,” or “the premise was right but the ending was too bleak.” A librarian can use that distinction to make the next three suggestions meaningfully different.

Use curated lists when you prefer a human-selected starting point

Curated lists are useful when you want to browse without answering questions. Booklist Reader is described by the ALA as a patron-facing publication with top-ten lists, recommendations, author interviews, and adult, youth and audio selections. A list can supply a theme or cluster of authors; still check publication date, length and tone before adding a title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a list as a map, not a mandate. Scan several entries, note the repeated subjects or styles that appeal to you, and then investigate one or two titles in your library catalog. A top-ten label signals curation, not a guarantee that every selection suits your current reading life.

Use your own reading history as a memory aid

A tracker helps when you remember that you enjoyed something but cannot recall its title, edition or author. The PLA identifies Goodreads as one place readers can make lists, track reading and see what friends are reading. Use that kind of data to recover patterns—authors you finish, formats you complete, subjects you return to—not as proof that a highly rated book will suit you. Popularity reflects many readers’ responses, not your present mood.

Look at completed books as well as abandoned ones. A short note such as “loved the voice, too much violence” or “excellent topic, too slow on audio” is more useful later than a star rating alone. Keep a “maybe later” list separate from your immediate queue so an old impulse does not crowd out what you actually want now.

How the routes differ

Route Best starting clue What you do Watch for
Read-alike search A favorite book, author or series Compare shared appeal, theme, tone and pace A shared author or genre may still feel very different
Mood or topic filters An experience or subject Mix one mood with one topic or format Labels are broad; inspect descriptions
Librarian or library form A personal request or difficult-to-name preference Explain one favorite, one change and one boundary Hours, forms, databases and subscriptions vary locally
Curated publication A wish to browse human-selected ideas Sample lists, interviews and audio or youth sections Publication date and availability may differ
Reading tracker A forgotten title or recurring pattern Review completed, abandoned and saved books Ratings and popularity are not personal evidence

Choose one route for the first search. Moving among five platforms before reading a description creates the feeling of progress without producing a decision. You can switch routes after you have a small set of candidates and know what information is missing.

Build a shortlist instead of collecting an endless queue

Save three to five plausible books, then stop searching temporarily. For each candidate, record the same information so that the comparison is visible rather than intuitive.

Check What to record Decision question
Mood and tone How the description and sample feel Does this match the emotional experience I want today?
Pace Fast, steady, episodic or slow-building Will the momentum fit my available attention?
Genre and blend Primary category and unusual combinations Is the blend appealing, or is it the part I wanted to avoid?
Subject and theme Central topic, setting or question Am I curious enough to stay with it?
Length Page, word or listening commitment when stated Can I realistically finish this in the time I have?
Format Print, ebook, audiobook or large print Is my preferred format available?
Content boundaries Warnings or exclusions that matter to you Is there a known deal-breaker?

Do not award fake precision. A simple note such as “right mood, possibly too long” is more honest than a numerical score whose scale you invented. If two books remain, choose the one that fits your immediate constraint—commute length, bedtime attention, a book-club date or the format you can obtain today.

Read the publisher or library description, then sample a page or opening when possible. A description can establish subject and premise, but the sample reveals sentence style, narrator and early pacing. If content boundaries matter, look for the library’s notes or ask staff rather than assuming a genre label answers the question.

A practical 15-minute method

  1. Write one clue. Name a mood, topic, favorite, format or avoidance. Do not search yet.
  2. Add two story elements. Pick any combination of appeal, theme, pace, length, format or tone.
  3. Select one route. Use a read-alike search for a favorite, a mood or topic filter for an experience, or a librarian for a personal request.
  4. Collect five candidates maximum. Save the title and the reason it appeared; stop opening new tabs.
  5. Remove obvious mismatches. Check description, format, length and content boundaries.
  6. Compare the final two or three. Ask which one best fits today rather than which one is objectively best.
  7. Verify access. Search your local library catalog and digital services, or your preferred source, only after choosing the book.
  8. Set a low-risk trial. Read a sample, listen to the opening or borrow before buying when possible. If the voice or pace is wrong, return to the shortlist instead of forcing yourself to finish.

Choose access after you choose the book

Discovery and access are separate decisions. A title may be the best match but unavailable in your preferred format, while another may be immediately borrowable. Check your local library catalog, ebook and audiobook services, holds policy and lending period after you have a candidate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Library databases and publications are not universal. NoveList Plus, Booklist Reader and other services may require a participating library or a subscription, and the available collection can differ by region. If a database is missing, ask library staff for an equivalent read-alike search or a curated list.

Check format details carefully. An ebook edition may have a different page count from print; an audiobook may be abridged or narrated by someone whose style does not suit you. When recommendations keep missing the mark

The suggestions share a genre but not the feeling

Replace the genre with the appeal. Instead of searching for “more historical fiction,” specify “historical fiction with dry humor and a fast plot,” or identify the relationship, structure or setting that mattered in your original book.

The list is too broad

Add one constraint, not five. A format (“audio under ten hours”), a topic (“coastal ecology”) or an avoidance (“no graphic violence”) will usually narrow results more usefully than stacking several overlapping genres.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The list is too narrow

Remove the least important filter and allow a neighboring genre. A reader seeking a “cozy mystery” might accept a gentle suspense novel; someone seeking a memoir about travel might enjoy narrative nonfiction about place.

You keep abandoning books

Record the abandonment reason. “Too slow,” “wrong narrator,” “too bleak” and “not enough context” are actionable data. Use the reason as your next search clue and tell a librarian exactly that; it is more informative than saying a recommendation was simply “bad.”

You cannot decide between several good options

Choose by logistics: the book available now, the shortest commitment, the format you will actually use, or the title that answers the question you are currently curious about. You can preserve the others on a list without treating the choice as permanent.

You are tired of your usual pattern

Keep one familiar element and change one variable. If you usually read domestic suspense, try a different setting; if you usually read long print novels, try a short audiobook on the same subject. A controlled change is easier to evaluate than abandoning every preference at once.

What not to assume about book-finding tools

  • A high community rating does not establish a personal match.
  • A shared author or genre does not guarantee shared tone or pace.
  • A database’s catalog count does not measure recommendation accuracy.
  • A library’s services, subscriptions and digital licenses may differ from those at another library.
  • Current features, filters and availability on any platform can change.

No independent comparative success rate establishes that one recommendation service is objectively best. The reliable part of the process is the reader’s own comparison: use a tool to generate possibilities, then test each possibility against your present needs.

The simplest rule to remember

Begin with whatever you know, translate it into a few story elements, choose one discovery route, and stop at a small shortlist. A mood, topic, favorite or “not this” preference is enough. The right next read is the candidate that fits your life and curiosity now—not the title with the most ratings or the most elaborate algorithmic match.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I do not know my genre?

You do not need one. Start with a mood, topic, favorite scene, format or avoidance. Translate that clue into appeal, theme, tone or pace, then search from those terms.

How many books should I put on a shortlist?

Three to five is enough for comparison. Save the reason each title appeared, remove obvious mismatches, and choose among the final two or three.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use a recommendation app or ask a librarian?

Use a read-alike or mood tool when you want to explore independently. Ask a librarian when your request is personal, includes sensitive content boundaries, or is difficult to phrase. Local services and database access vary.

Is NoveList Plus free?

Access depends on your library. EBSCO describes NoveList Plus as a library-oriented database, so check your local library’s subscriptions rather than assuming universal access.

Are ratings a reliable way to choose my next book?

Ratings can help you notice a title, but popularity reflects many readers’ responses. Compare tone, pace, subject, length, format and content boundaries with your own needs.

What should I do if I start a book and dislike it?

Name the specific problem—too slow, wrong narrator, too bleak or another issue. Use that reason as a new search clue, return to your shortlist, or ask a librarian for alternatives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start with one clue, turn it into two or three story qualities, use one discovery route, and compare a small shortlist. Verify the format and local access only after you have a likely choice.
