The quickest way to identify a motherboard in Windows is to open System Information (msinfo32) and read Baseboard Manufacturer and Baseboard Product. If you prefer a command, PowerShell can return the same fields. BIOS/UEFI is the fallback when Windows will not start, while Linux can read the board identity through dmidecode or the DMI files in /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id.

Use the result as an identifier, not automatically as a retail product name. Prebuilt desktops and laptops often report an internal OEM code, so verify the complete computer model or service identifier before downloading firmware or buying a compatibility-sensitive part.

What you are actually looking for

Motherboard information is normally exposed through firmware using SMBIOS or DMI records. Windows calls the relevant fields Baseboard Manufacturer, Baseboard Product, and sometimes Baseboard Version. Linux and firmware menus may use terms such as board, mainboard, baseboard, product, model, or version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse the motherboard identifier with the computer’s overall model. SMBIOS stores a separate System Manufacturer and System Product Name for the complete desktop or laptop. A custom desktop may show a recognizable retail board name, but an OEM computer may show an internal board code that is meaningful only to the system maker.

The board model is useful when you need to:

  • Find the correct BIOS or UEFI update.
  • Check CPU, memory, storage, expansion-slot, or operating-system compatibility.
  • Identify drivers or manuals.
  • Give accurate information to a repair technician or manufacturer.

Record the manufacturer and product together, plus the version or revision when one is shown. A partial string such as a chipset name is not enough to select firmware safely.

Choose the method that fits your situation

Method Where it works What it shows Main trade-off
Windows System Information Running Windows Baseboard manufacturer, product, version, and separate BIOS version/date Graphical and easiest, but values can be blank or generic
Windows PowerShell Running Windows with access to PowerShell A focused Win32_BaseBoard result Fast and scriptable; still depends on firmware-reported data
BIOS/UEFI setup Before the operating system starts Board model and firmware version on a vendor information page Requires a restart and vendor-specific navigation
Linux dmidecode Linux with the utility installed and permission to read firmware tables Decoded baseboard manufacturer, model, version, and possibly serial number Usually requires elevated privileges
Linux sysfs DMI files Linux systems exposing DMI data Individual board identity strings File availability and readability vary by system

Find the motherboard model in Windows System Information

System Information is the best first option on a working Windows installation. Microsoft describes the utility as a comprehensive view of hardware, system components, and software that can help diagnose computer issues.

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type msinfo32 and press Enter. You can also search Windows for System Information and open the result.
  3. In the left pane, select System Summary.
  4. In the details pane, locate Baseboard Manufacturer.
  5. Read Baseboard Product. This is the board’s reported product or model identifier.
  6. Record Baseboard Version if it is present. A revision can affect firmware and hardware compatibility.
  7. Read BIOS Version/Date only if you also need to document the installed firmware. It is a different field from the board model.

The result may contain a familiar model name, an alphanumeric part number, or a generic value. Copy the text exactly, including punctuation and revision suffixes. If either baseboard field is empty, continue with PowerShell rather than guessing from the processor or chipset.

Export a System Information report

For support cases, you can save the System Summary instead of transcribing it. Open an elevated or ordinary Command Prompt and run:

msinfo32 /nfo syssum.nfo /categories +systemsummary

The command writes a System Information NFO file named syssum.nfo in the current directory. Open it with System Information when you need to review or share the report. Treat the file as potentially sensitive: it can include hardware, software, and system details that you may not want to publish publicly.

Get the model with PowerShell

PowerShell provides a concise result from the Windows Win32_BaseBoard CIM class. Open PowerShell from the Start menu or Windows Terminal and run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_BaseBoard | Select-Object Manufacturer, Product, Version

The output labels the three values directly:

  • Manufacturer is the company string reported for the baseboard.
  • Product is the board’s reported product or model identifier.
  • Version is the reported board revision or version when the firmware supplies one.

This command is useful when you need a clean result for a support message, script, or inventory record. It does not magically discover a hidden retail name; it reads the same underlying firmware identity data that other operating-system tools use.

Why not use WMIC as the default?

Older Windows instructions often use WMIC to query the motherboard. Microsoft has announced WMIC deprecation in future Windows 11 releases, and current guidance favors PowerShell’s CIM commands. A legacy command may still work on some installations, but it should not be your preferred procedure for a new Windows 11 setup or a script you expect to maintain.

Find the motherboard in BIOS or UEFI

Firmware setup is the practical fallback when Windows is unavailable, the disk will not boot, or the operating-system fields look suspicious. Restart the computer and use the entry key specified for that computer or motherboard. F2 and Delete are common on many systems, but there is no universal key; some computers use another function key, Escape, or a boot-menu route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Save your work and restart.
  2. As soon as the computer begins powering on, repeatedly press the documented setup key.
  3. Enter the firmware setup rather than a one-time boot menu if both choices appear.
  4. Look for a page named System Information, Main, Board Information, or a similar label.
  5. Read the motherboard or board model and the BIOS/UEFI version. Write them down or photograph the screen for reference.
  6. Exit without saving changes when identification is your only goal.

Menu names, locations, and graphics vary by vendor and firmware generation. A model shown on the first page may be an OEM board code rather than the name printed on a retail box. Do not change boot mode, security, voltage, or update settings while looking for the identifier.

Find the motherboard model in Linux

Use dmidecode

On Linux, dmidecode decodes the system’s DMI tables. To request only baseboard records, run:

sudo dmidecode --type baseboard

The output can include the baseboard manufacturer, product name, version, and serial number. The --type baseboard selector prevents the command from dumping unrelated hardware categories, making the relevant record easier to read.

Permission requirements and package availability differ by distribution. If the command is not installed, use your distribution’s documented package-management procedure rather than copying a package command intended for a different distribution. Some virtual machines, unusual firmware implementations, and restricted environments may expose incomplete DMI data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the DMI sysfs files

Many Linux systems expose individual firmware strings under:

/sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id

List the directory first:

ls /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id

Relevant files commonly include names for the board vendor, board name, and board version. Read a file with:

cat /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id/board_vendor
cat /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id/board_name
cat /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id/board_version

Not every machine provides every file, and permissions can differ. A missing file means that particular string is not exposed through sysfs; it does not prove that the computer has no identifiable motherboard. Compare available values with the firmware screen or the computer maker’s support information when accuracy matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret a generic or unfamiliar result

A value that looks wrong is not automatically a software failure. Microsoft’s SMBIOS guidance distinguishes the overall system product from the baseboard product and notes that the baseboard value is company-set. An OEM can therefore report an internal part code, a platform code, or a generic string instead of the name used in retail marketing.

Custom-built desktop

Use the baseboard manufacturer and product together. Check the board maker’s official product documentation for the exact model and revision, especially if several revisions share a similar name. The revision printed on the physical board may be more specific than the firmware string.

Prebuilt desktop or laptop

Start with the complete computer model, service identifier, or serial-based support page supplied by the system maker. The maker may document a proprietary board under an internal code, and a retail motherboard search can lead to the wrong BIOS file or incompatible part.

Conflicting Windows, firmware, and Linux values

When System Information, PowerShell, BIOS/UEFI, and Linux show different or generic values, describe the result as inconclusive. Do not select firmware based on the longest or most familiar-looking string. Use the manufacturer’s support channel and provide the complete computer model, the reported board values, and any revision printed on the hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify before updating firmware or buying parts

Motherboard identification is often done because the next step carries risk. Use this verification sequence before acting:

  1. Copy the exact Baseboard Manufacturer and Baseboard Product values.
  2. Record the Baseboard Version or physical board revision if available.
  3. Record the computer’s System Manufacturer and System Product Name separately.
  4. Compare the values with the official support page for the board or complete computer model.
  5. For a BIOS/UEFI download, confirm the exact model, revision, and supported update path. Do not use a file for a merely similar model.
  6. For a CPU, memory, storage, or expansion-card purchase, check the board or system documentation for socket, firmware, slot, size, and power requirements.

These checks matter because a motherboard name alone may not capture regional variants, OEM customizations, or board revisions. If the support documentation does not clearly match the identifier, stop and ask the manufacturer rather than experimenting with firmware.

Troubleshoot missing or unusable motherboard information

System Information fields are blank

  • Run the PowerShell CIM command and compare its output.
  • Restart and inspect the BIOS/UEFI information page.
  • Check the complete computer model in System Information and use that model on the OEM support site.

The result says “To be filled by O.E.M.” or appears generic

This usually indicates that the firmware supplied a placeholder or internal value. Use the computer model, service identifier, physical labels, and the vendor’s support documentation to establish the exact platform. Do not infer the retail board from the chipset, processor, or case branding.

The command is unavailable on Linux

Use the sysfs path if it exists. If neither method is available, inspect BIOS/UEFI or consult the distribution and hardware vendor documentation. Virtual machines may report the host’s virtual hardware rather than a physical motherboard.

You cannot enter BIOS/UEFI

Look up the setup procedure for the exact computer model, try the manufacturer’s documented key, and use Windows advanced startup only if Windows still boots. Avoid changing firmware settings merely to locate the model; a system-information page or OEM support label may provide the same answer without risk.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Understand the limits of each identifier

Every method in this guide reads firmware-reported identity data. That makes the methods consistent, but it also means they can reproduce the same incomplete or inaccurate string. A Windows field is not an independent confirmation simply because it appears in a graphical window, and a Linux value is not necessarily more authoritative because it came from a terminal.

Use multiple readings when the decision is important. For example, compare the Baseboard Product from System Information with the value returned by PowerShell, then check the BIOS/UEFI page. Matching values provide useful corroboration. If all three show an OEM code, use that code together with the System Product Name on the manufacturer’s support site rather than trying to translate it through an unofficial lookup.

Do not treat a BIOS version as a motherboard model. The same firmware screen can show both values, but the version identifies installed firmware while the board product identifies the platform. Likewise, a processor model, chipset family, socket type, or case label can narrow possibilities but cannot establish the exact board revision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to send to support

When a technician or manufacturer asks for the motherboard, provide the full strings instead of a shortened nickname. A useful report includes:

  • System Manufacturer.
  • System Product Name or complete PC model.
  • Baseboard Manufacturer.
  • Baseboard Product.
  • Baseboard Version, if present.
  • BIOS Version/Date or UEFI version, when firmware is involved.
  • Whether the values came from Windows, firmware setup, Linux, or more than one method.

Include a photo of the firmware information page or a copied command result when transcription could introduce an error. Redact serial numbers or other identifying information if you are posting publicly and the support request does not require them.

Keep the identification record useful

Save a short note containing the system manufacturer, system product name, baseboard manufacturer, baseboard product, baseboard version, BIOS/UEFI version/date, and the date you recorded them. Keeping these fields separate prevents a common support mistake: sending the PC model when a technician asked for the motherboard, or sending a board code when the technician needs the complete OEM model.

For routine identification, Windows System Information is the simplest route. PowerShell is best for a precise command-line result, BIOS/UEFI works independently of the operating system, and Linux’s DMI tools provide equivalent access from a Linux environment. In every case, treat the displayed text as firmware-reported evidence and verify it against the correct manufacturer support record before making a compatibility or firmware decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest way to check my motherboard model in Windows 11?

Press Win + R, enter msinfo32, and open System Summary. Read Baseboard Manufacturer and Baseboard Product. You can also run the PowerShell CIM command for a concise result.

Is Baseboard Product the same as my computer model?

No. Baseboard Product identifies the motherboard record, while System Product Name identifies the complete desktop or laptop. OEM systems may use an internal board code that does not match a retail motherboard name.

Can I find the motherboard model without booting Windows?

Yes. Enter BIOS/UEFI setup using the key documented for your computer, commonly F2 or Delete on many systems, and look for System Information, Main, or Board Information. Linux can also read DMI data if a Linux environment is available.

Why does Windows show a generic motherboard name?

The firmware may contain a placeholder, internal OEM code, or incomplete SMBIOS value. Check the complete system model or service identifier on the computer maker’s support site and compare the BIOS/UEFI page before choosing firmware or parts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I still use WMIC to identify a motherboard?

PowerShell’s Get-CimInstance command is the preferred current approach. Microsoft has announced WMIC deprecation in future Windows 11 releases, so avoid making WMIC the basis of a new procedure or script.

What does dmidecode show on Linux?

sudo dmidecode --type baseboard decodes baseboard DMI records and can show manufacturer, product name, version, and serial number. Availability and permissions depend on the distribution and environment.

What if dmidecode is not installed?

Check /sys/devices/virtual/dmi/id and read files such as board_vendor, board_name, and board_version when present. You can also inspect BIOS/UEFI or consult the hardware maker’s documentation.

Can I choose a BIOS update from the chipset name alone?

No. Confirm the exact board or complete OEM computer model, revision, and supported update path. A chipset, processor, or partial board string is not sufficient to select firmware safely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start with Windows System Information and record Baseboard Manufacturer, Baseboard Product, and Baseboard Version. Use PowerShell for a focused command, BIOS/UEFI when the operating system is unavailable, and Linux’s dmidecode or DMI files when working in Linux. Because these values come from firmware and may be OEM-specific, verify the exact model and revision with the manufacturer before updating firmware or buying compatibility-sensitive parts.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
