For many personal Office installations, open Word and go to File > Account; the email beside Belongs to is the account to check. Under the product name, note the email address beside Belongs to. For many consumer Microsoft 365 and Office installations, this identifies the Microsoft account associated with the license.

Sign in to that account and open Services & subscriptions. Check whether Office appears and offers an install option.

If you cannot open Office, try the Microsoft accounts you may have used to buy or redeem it. Microsoft says the account replaces the product key for many current reinstall and activation tasks. Microsoft’s product-key guidance explains where keys are used and why the account is often the useful locator.
If the software came from your employer or school, check which work or school identity appears in Office and ask the IT administrator which license is assigned. An organization may need to assign a desktop-app license before installation is available.

Identify the edition and how you got it
Before uninstalling anything, determine whether the entitlement is a Microsoft 365 subscription, a one-time Office purchase, a preinstalled offer that came with the PC, a Workplace Discount Program purchase, or an organization-managed or volume license. These routes do not necessarily share the same install or transfer rules.

Microsoft’s Office installation guidance separates home, business, Workplace Discount Program, and volume-license procedures. Use the route matching how your Office was provided, rather than assuming that a personal Microsoft account can install every edition.

Check whether your license can move
Microsoft’s current transfer guidance explicitly covers Office 2024 and Office 2021 one-time purchases. It says the license holder may transfer the software to another computer they own no more than once every 90 days, except when a hardware failure justifies an earlier transfer. The software must be removed from the old computer, and you may not keep a copy there. Microsoft states: “Any time you transfer the software to a new computer, you must remove the software from the prior computer and you may not retain any copies.” See Transfer your Office license to another device or another person.
Do not apply that specific 2021/2024 rule automatically to an older edition, a preinstalled PC offer, an employer-provided entitlement, or another special purchase channel. Check the terms for that product and channel before moving it. Microsoft describes one-time Office purchases such as Office Home & Business, Office Home & Student, and Office Home as being installed on one PC or Mac at a time.

Install Office on the replacement PC
Personal account-linked purchase
On the new PC, sign in to the Microsoft account used to buy or redeem Office, then use the install option in Services & subscriptions. If you received a retail product key, it is generally redeemed once to associate the purchase with your account; later reinstalls usually use that account rather than entering the key again.
Work or school license
Sign in with the assigned work or school account. If Office is missing from the account’s install options, ask the administrator to confirm that a desktop-app license is assigned. Business installations, volume licenses, and some Workplace Discount Program versions may require a separate deployment or key process.
Activate the new installation
Open an Office app and sign in with the personal account or organization identity that owns the entitlement. If activation reports a device limit or offers phone activation, follow the activation prompt and confirm the old installation has been removed when required. Microsoft’s Office activation guidance covers the activation wizard; its different-device reactivation guidance describes phone activation as a possible step for transfers allowed by the license terms. An activation error alone does not establish that the license is lost.
If you cannot find a product key
For most current versions, you cannot retrieve the complete key from Word or the Microsoft account page; the linked account is normally what you need for reinstalling. There are exceptions, including some Workplace Discount Program and volume-license installations. If your copy belongs to one of those channels, use its specific instructions or contact the organization that supplied it rather than relying on a key-recovery assumption.
