How to Find Your Local Power Outage Map and Report an Outage

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

Find the electric delivery utility for your address, open its official outage map, and report the interruption through the utility’s own website, app, text service, or telephone line. A missing marker does not prove the utility knows about the outage: maps can lag, so report the problem directly. If you see a downed power line or another immediate hazard, stay away, call 9-1-1, and then notify the utility as local instructions require.

How do I find my local power outage map?

1. Identify the electric delivery utility

Start with a recent electric bill. The company listed as the local delivery or distribution utility owns or operates the wires serving the address and is normally responsible for outage information, repair work, and restoration. Do not assume the company that sells your electricity is the company that operates the lines. In some competitive markets, a household chooses a retail supplier while a separate distribution utility delivers the power. Oncor, for example, describes itself as an electric transmission and distribution utility and notes that residents receive energy through retail providers they choose.

If you do not have a bill, use your state public utility commission’s official utility directory, territory map, or outage-resource page. The California Public Utilities Commission’s Power Outage Maps page links to outage maps for the investor-owned utilities it regulates and tells customers to report outages on their utility’s website. The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission’s Utility Outages page links customers to outage maps or reporting channels for five large investor-owned utilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those pages are examples of how a regulator can help you identify the right company, not a complete national address lookup. A municipal utility or electric cooperative may serve your location instead. Check your city or town utility page, your cooperative’s website, or the state regulator for the applicable service territory. If you are checking an address where you do not live, such as a rental, business, or family member’s home, use that property’s bill or service-area information rather than your own utility account.

2. Open the utility’s official website

Use the domain printed on your bill or linked by the regulator. Look for menu labels such as Outage Map, Outages, Report Outage, Storm Center, or Outage Status. Confirm that the page belongs to the utility before entering an address, account number, telephone number, or email address. During storms, avoid relying on an unverified social-media link or a search result that imitates a utility page.

3. Search the map for your location

Most utility maps provide an address field. Some also allow a city or county search or let you browse the map manually. PG&E documents all three approaches: enter an address, search by city or county, or select an incident on the map. Use the most precise address available, then read the incident details and the map’s last-updated time. If the map asks you to choose among multiple similarly named streets or cities, verify the county and service address before relying on the result.

Is there a power outage in my area?

The local delivery utility’s map is the best source for an address-specific answer. A regional or statewide map can show broader conditions, but it may combine multiple utilities, omit smaller providers, or display only recent incidents. Live customer counts change as utilities receive reports and restore circuits, so use the current utility page rather than an old screenshot or a fixed number copied elsewhere.

Read the incident details, not just the colored area

Where provided, check the approximate location, number of customers affected, time the outage was reported or identified, restoration estimate, restoration status, and last update. A shaded polygon may represent a large circuit and may not place a marker directly on every affected home. Treat a restoration estimate as a working projection rather than a promise: crews may need to inspect damage, obtain access, replace equipment, or address additional outages first.

Some trackers distinguish between an outage reported by a customer and one identified by automated equipment. Others show a general area until crews complete a damage assessment. Those labels are useful context, but they do not replace reporting an interruption at your address when the service is off.

Understand map refresh delays

Published update intervals differ by utility and by the type of map you are viewing. The following figures are the utilities’ or agencies’ stated cadences, not guarantees that every incident will appear immediately.

Map or data source Published update information Qualification
Pacific Gas and Electric Company outage map Updates every five minutes PG&E says updates can take up to 30 minutes during widespread outages.
Oncor Electric Delivery online map Outage information is sent to the map every 10 minutes Oncor warns that high site traffic can delay a refresh.
California Office of Emergency Services Power Outage Incidents layer Automatically updates every 15 minutes The layer is pulled from utility public maps, covers recent outages only, and has no historical data.

Because these are different systems, do not compare the intervals as service-level guarantees. A utility’s own address-level map and reporting tool remain the authoritative combination for your service location. Refreshing a browser repeatedly cannot force the utility’s underlying incident system to update; read the timestamp and use another official reporting channel if needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I report an outage if it is not on the map?

Report it through the utility’s listed channel even when no incident marker appears. The map may not have refreshed, the event may be too small to display yet, or the utility may not know that your service is interrupted.

  1. Open the utility’s report function. Select Report Outage or the equivalent link on the official outage page. PG&E explains that a customer can enter an address or choose Report an outage; when the utility is not aware of an outage, the report option appears.
  2. Provide the requested location and contact details. Use the affected service address and answer any account or safety questions accurately. Do not submit a report through an unrelated map or social-media post unless the utility specifically identifies it as an official channel.
  3. Use another official channel if the online form is unavailable. Utilities may accept reports through a mobile app, text service, or telephone line. Options, enrollment requirements, and phone numbers differ, so use the contact information published by your utility.
  4. Save the confirmation. Record a confirmation number, submission time, or screenshot if the utility provides one. This helps you follow up without submitting repeated reports.
  5. Check status after reporting. Reopen the utility’s status page and read its last-updated time. Subscribe to the utility’s outage alerts when available.

Why a report can matter before a marker appears

An outage map is a display of information the utility has processed; it is not necessarily the intake system that first learns about an interruption. Reporting creates a direct notification and can help the utility correlate your address with other calls or automated equipment signals. It also avoids assuming that a stale map means the crew already knows about your service.

If several homes are without power, say so when the form or operator asks for details. If only one building is affected, describe that accurately rather than guessing at the cause. The utility can determine whether the interruption is on its network; customers should not attempt to inspect or repair utility equipment.

Who do I call to report a power outage?

Call the outage or emergency number published on your delivery utility’s official website or bill. Do not substitute the number of your retail electricity supplier if a different company operates the local wires. There is no single nationwide outage number that routes every address to the correct crew.

Channel When it is useful What to verify
Utility website You need an outage report, address lookup, incident details, or restoration status. Use the utility’s official domain and note the last-updated time.
Utility mobile app You already have the utility’s app and want reporting or push alerts. Confirm that the app is the utility’s official app and that alerts are enabled for the correct address.
Utility text service You are enrolled in the utility’s text-alert program and need a quick report or update. Enrollment rules and supported commands vary by utility.
Utility telephone line The website is unreachable, you cannot use the online form, or you need assistance with a service address. Use the outage or customer-service number printed on the bill or official site; numbers are utility-specific.

Oncor lists online reporting, telephone reporting, and text alerts for customers enrolled in its alert program. PG&E publishes separate customer and outage contacts alongside its online reporting instructions. These examples show why you should follow the options and numbers for your own utility rather than rely on a generic national number. A phone operator may ask for the service address, account details, callback number, or information about downed wires; have those details ready, but never delay an emergency call to gather paperwork.

What should I do if a power line is down?

Handle a downed line as an immediate safety emergency, not as an ordinary outage-status question.

  • Stay well away from the wire, poles, vehicles, fences, puddles, and any object that may be touching it.
  • Assume the line is energized, even if it appears quiet, damaged, or disconnected.
  • Do not touch the line, move it, cut it, or touch a person or object in contact with it.
  • If you are in a vehicle near a downed line, remain inside unless there is an immediate life-threatening reason to leave; follow emergency responders’ directions.
  • Call 9-1-1 for the hazard, fire, injury, traffic danger, or any other immediate threat. Then notify the electric utility using its emergency or outage channel as directed locally.

PG&E’s safety instructions are to stay away, avoid touching the line or anything in contact with it, call 9-1-1, and then call PG&E. The universal principle is separation and emergency notification; follow your own utility and local emergency agency’s instructions for the exact area. Do not enter a flooded area to investigate an electrical problem, and do not try to determine whether a fallen wire is a communications cable.

Can a state outage map replace the utility’s map?

No. A state resource is useful for regional awareness or for finding the responsible utility, but the local utility’s map and reporting channel are primary for your address.

Resource Best use Limits to keep in mind
Local delivery utility map Address-level status, incident details, reporting, and restoration updates. Refreshes can lag during widespread outages or heavy traffic.
State utility commission directory Identify the utility and reach its official map or reporting page. It is a directory and routing resource, not a universal live map for every address.
Statewide aggregator See a broad picture across participating utilities. Coverage, update timing, and incident history may be limited.

California’s Office of Emergency Services describes its Power Outage Incidents layer as data pulled from utility public maps and automatically updated every 15 minutes. The description says it includes only recent outages and no historical data. Use that type of layer to understand regional conditions, then switch to the serving utility for an address-specific report or status. A statewide layer may also continue showing a recent incident after the utility has changed its own status, so check both timestamps when they disagree.

What information should an outage tracker provide?

Tracker features depend on the utility and jurisdiction. Texas provides a concrete example of a state requirement, but it should not be treated as a nationwide rule. In a February 14, 2025 release, the Public Utility Commission of Texas announced an update to 16 Texas Administrative Code §25.52 requiring utilities that deliver power to retail electric customers to maintain online outage trackers. The release describes required information including:

  • the utility’s service territory;
  • approximate locations of active outages;
  • when an outage was reported or identified;
  • an estimated restoration time;
  • restoration status;
  • the tracker’s last-updated time; and
  • ways to report an outage or hazardous condition, including one digital reporting method.

The release says the information must be available in English and Spanish. This requirement applies to the Texas rule described in that release; other states and utilities may provide different fields or channels. If a tracker supplies only a general map and no report button, use the separate outage number or customer portal listed by the same utility.

Troubleshooting: the map, form, or phone line is not working

The map shows no outage, but your power is off

Verify that you selected the correct delivery utility and entered the exact service address. Refresh after several minutes, read the map’s timestamp, and submit an outage report anyway. If your neighbors are also without power, mention that in the report; if only your home is affected, check whether the utility’s instructions distinguish a service interruption from a problem inside the property. Do not open electrical panels or manipulate meters to diagnose the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The map is slow or unavailable

Try the utility’s alternative official channel: its app, text-alert service, or telephone line. During a major storm, heavy traffic can delay a map refresh, as Oncor notes, and PG&E says widespread outages can extend its normal update interval. Do not infer that an unavailable map means service has been restored. If the website is down, write down the time you attempted to report and use the published phone number when available.

You cannot tell which company serves the address

Look at the bill for the delivery-utility name rather than only the seller name. If there is no bill, use the state commission’s directory or contact the municipality or cooperative that serves the location. Once identified, start from that entity’s own website. A landlord, property manager, or neighbor may also know the utility name, but verify it through an official page before submitting personal information.

The utility shows an estimated restoration time that passes

Recheck the incident’s last-updated time and any new status note, then contact the utility through its published outage channel. Estimates can change after crews inspect damage or discover additional work. Keep following emergency instructions if conditions at the site become hazardous. An expired estimate is a reason to request current information, not a reason to approach damaged equipment or assume the service is safe.

A quick outage-reporting checklist

  • Find the delivery utility on a recent bill or through an official regulator, municipal, or cooperative resource.
  • Open the utility’s official outage map or storm center.
  • Search by address; use city, county, or map browsing if the site offers those choices.
  • Read the incident status, last-updated time, and any restoration estimate.
  • Submit an outage report through the utility even when no marker appears.
  • Use the utility’s official app, text service, or telephone line if the web form fails.
  • Save any confirmation and check status alerts afterward.
  • For a downed line or immediate danger, keep away, call 9-1-1, and then notify the utility as directed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my local power outage map?

Check a recent bill for the electric delivery utility, then open that company’s official website and search for “Outage Map,” “Outages,” “Storm Center,” or “Report Outage.” If you cannot identify the company, use your state utility commission’s directory or contact the local municipality or cooperative.

Who do I call to report a power outage?

Call the outage or customer-service number listed on the delivery utility’s bill or official website. Retail electricity suppliers may be different from the company that owns the local wires, so a supplier’s general number may not dispatch the correct crew.

How do I report an outage if it is not on the map?

Use the utility’s report function anyway. A map can lag or the utility may not yet know about a small interruption. If the web form fails, use the utility’s official app, enrolled text service, or published telephone line, and save any confirmation.

How current are outage maps?

Cadences vary. PG&E states five-minute updates, with delays of up to 30 minutes during widespread outages. Oncor says information is sent every 10 minutes but high traffic can delay refreshes. California’s statewide incidents layer updates every 15 minutes and contains recent incidents only. Read the timestamp and treat these intervals as stated targets, not guarantees.

What should I do if a power line is down?

Stay far away and assume the line is energized. Do not touch it or anything in contact with it. Call 9-1-1 for immediate danger, then notify the electric utility as local instructions direct. Remain in a vehicle near a fallen line unless emergency responders tell you to leave or there is an immediate life-threatening danger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I rely on a statewide outage map?

Use it for broad regional awareness or to help identify the serving utility, but use the local delivery utility’s map and reporting channel for your address. Aggregators can have limited coverage, delayed updates, and no historical incident record.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there one national power outage map or phone number?

No. Outage maps and reporting channels are utility-specific. Identify the electric delivery utility serving the address and use its official website, app, text service, or telephone line.

Why does my neighbor’s outage appear while mine does not?

Maps may group outages by circuit, refresh at different times, or display only incidents already processed by the utility. Report your own address even when its marker is missing.

Does reporting an outage cost money?

The cited utility instructions describe reporting channels but do not establish a general fee rule. Use the utility’s published website, app, text service, or phone number and follow its terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What details should I have ready when calling?

Have the affected service address and, if requested, your account or callback information. Describe any downed wire or immediate hazard, but do not approach equipment to gather details.

The Bottom Line

Find the electric delivery utility for the address, use its official outage map, and report the interruption directly even if no marker appears. Check timestamps because maps can lag, and treat restoration estimates as changeable. For any downed line or immediate danger, keep away, call 9-1-1, and then contact the utility as local emergency instructions require.
