Some tools can report the speed directly, but that information is not always exposed. First confirm the drive is a spinning HDD: RPM does not apply to an SSD.
First, confirm whether the drive is an HDD or SSD
RPM measures how fast a hard drive’s platters spin. An SSD has no spinning platters, so it has no spindle speed. Operating systems can often identify the media type without opening the computer:

- Windows: Open Task Manager and select Performance. Check whether the physical disk is identified as an HDD or SSD.
- macOS: Open System Information and inspect the storage details. The Storage area may identify a device as “Solid State” or “Rotational.”
- Linux: Run
lsblk -d -o NAME,MODEL,ROTA. AROTAvalue of1indicates a rotational device;0indicates a nonrotational device.
These indicators help identify the media type; they do not provide an exact RPM rating.
Find the exact model number
Use the model string for the physical disk—not the computer’s model, a drive letter, or a generic name shown for an enclosure. Then search that exact model on the drive manufacturer’s official site for a specification called “Rotation Speed,” “Spindle Speed,” or “RPM.” The model-specific manufacturer specification is the most reliable final confirmation.

Windows
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Disk drives and copy the drive model listed there. Seagate documents this method in its instructions for determining internal drive details.
- Look up the exact model on its manufacturer’s support page and check the published rotation-speed specification.
Task Manager and PowerShell’s Get-PhysicalDisk output can also help identify the media type or disk. Treat friendly names as clues and verify the physical model before relying on a specification.
macOS
- Open System Information.
- Inspect Storage to check whether the device is described as solid-state or rotational.
- For the model, inspect the relevant SATA or USB section and record the physical drive’s model name.
- Look up that exact model on the manufacturer’s official specification page.
Seagate describes using System Information (called System Profiler in older macOS versions) to inspect hardware and drive details in its drive-identification guide. What an external drive reports can vary with its connection and bridge.

Linux
- Run
lsblk -d -o NAME,MODEL,ROTAto list device names, models, and rotational status. - If
smartctlis installed and the drive supports the relevant information, runsudo smartctl -i /dev/sdX, replacing/dev/sdXwith the correct device path. - Check the output for a
Rotation Ratefield. If it is absent, use the model string to find the manufacturer’s published specification.
Do not assume that /dev/sda is the drive you want; identify the correct device before running a command against it.
When software can show RPM directly
Some disk-information tools and supported SMART queries display a “Rotation Rate” field. Whether that field appears depends on what the drive, controller, firmware, and connection expose. A missing value does not prove that a drive is an SSD or that it has no rated speed; confirm the media type and check the exact model specification.

Microsoft’s Rotational Rate Test (LOGO) describes how hardware reports rotational rate: SATA uses IDENTIFY DEVICE data word 217, while SAS and NVMe use the MEDIUM ROTATION RATE field in INQUIRY VPD page 0xB1. This is a hardware-test reference, not a normal Windows menu for checking a drive’s RPM.

A USB enclosure or adapter may report its own bridge or controller rather than the drive inside it. If the device appears under a generic name or its physical model is unavailable, try another identification method, a compatible direct connection where practical, or the label on the drive itself. Removing a drive from a computer is not necessary when its model is already visible through the operating system.

What to do if the reported RPM and specification disagree
- Check that the model string matches the physical drive exactly, including any suffix that distinguishes a model variant.
- Confirm the tool is reading the physical disk rather than an enclosure, controller, or virtual device.
- Compare the readout with the manufacturer’s specification for that exact model. If they still conflict, report the discrepancy rather than selecting a value without evidence.
