Start with the county or parish connected to the event or case, then use your state’s official prosecutor directory or a state prosecutor association lookup to identify the office. Confirm whether the area is covered by a district or circuit, and verify the office’s phone number, address, and contact instructions on its own official page. The right office cannot be identified without your state and locality.
Find the office for the place connected to your matter
Begin with the county or parish where the event occurred or case is being handled. Your home address alone may not identify the prosecutor with jurisdiction. Search the locality with the title used in your state, such as “district attorney,” “county prosecutor,” or “prosecuting attorney.”

USAGov’s local government directory offers a state-by-state route to local government information. It is a navigation aid, not a single nationwide district-attorney roster. The USAGov elected-officials guide also helps locate county, city, and town officials.

- Choose your state’s official route. Search the state name with “district attorney directory,” “find your prosecutor,” or the local office title. For example, USAGov’s Alabama page lists an Office of Prosecution Services District Attorney Listing.
- Look up the county, parish, district, or circuit. Depending on the state, the directory may offer a county or name search, a parish selector, or a map.
- Check the jurisdiction listed. Do not assume district or circuit borders always match county lines. Indiana’s prosecutor directory explains that most judicial circuits correspond to one county, but Dearborn and Ohio Counties share a circuit.
- Open the prosecutor office’s official page. Confirm the current phone number and street address there or on a government-hosted listing; use the office’s published contact channel and intake instructions.
Examples of state lookup routes
| State | Directory route | What it provides |
|---|---|---|
| Pennsylvania | Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association | Search by county or name; office addresses and phone numbers. |
| Louisiana | Louisiana District Attorneys Association | Select a parish to view office contact information. |
| Colorado | Colorado District Attorneys’ Council | A map and directory to find a district attorney. |
| Massachusetts | Mass.gov district attorney directory | Office addresses, phone numbers, and links to office websites. |
| Indiana | Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council | Prosecutors listed by judicial circuit and county; the directory notes a shared circuit for Dearborn and Ohio Counties. |
These examples show why the lookup method varies: states may use different office titles and organize coverage by county, parish, district, or circuit.
#1 Best Overall
Contact the office through its stated channel
Follow the instructions on the office’s own page rather than assuming a general contact form is appropriate. A directory identifies a way to reach the office; it does not establish that the office can resolve a private dispute, provide personal legal advice, or handle every type of inquiry. It also cannot guarantee a response time or a particular action.
