Open Settings > Apps > Video playback in Windows 11 to review video processing, battery, and—on supported devices—resolution options. The right choices depend on whether you want longer battery life, lower network use, or better video quality.

Where to find Windows 11 video playback settings

  1. Select Start, type Settings, and open the Settings app.
  2. Go to Settings > Apps > Video playback.
  3. Review the controls shown on your PC. Available options and their effects vary by device and app. Microsoft describes the page and supported app types.

These controls apply to apps that use the built-in Windows video platform. Microsoft’s examples include Photos and Movies & TV, as well as some Microsoft Store video apps such as Hulu, Netflix, and Vudu. They do not necessarily affect every desktop program or web browser.

Choose settings for your priority

Priority What to choose Trade-off
Longer battery life Under Battery options, select Optimize for battery life. If available, enable Play video at a lower resolution when on battery. Video may play at lower resolution, and HDR playback on battery may be unavailable. Microsoft does not publish a guaranteed battery-life gain for these controls. Microsoft’s battery guidance.
HDR or video quality on battery Select Optimize for video quality under Battery options, then confirm that HDR is supported and enabled for your display and app. HDR playback uses more battery and depends on compatible display, app, and HDR configuration. Microsoft’s HDR guidance.
Lower network bandwidth Enable lower-resolution playback if that control appears. A less detailed image is the trade-off; Microsoft does not give a specific bandwidth-saving figure for this setting. Microsoft’s video playback guidance.

What the video processing options do

Windows may offer video processing that enhances playback, but whether it is available or useful depends on the PC’s hardware and the app. Lower-resolution playback is a separate option intended to help reduce network bandwidth; it can make the picture less detailed. The exact controls can differ across devices, so use the labels shown on your own Video playback page rather than assuming every PC has the same switches.

Set battery preferences and apply changes

  1. On the Video playback page, find Battery options.
  2. Choose Optimize for battery life to favor battery runtime, or Optimize for video quality if picture quality and HDR are the priority.
  3. If shown, select Play video at a lower resolution when on battery to further prioritize battery life.
  4. Restart the video after changing relevant settings. Microsoft notes that battery preferences can affect HDR playback.

If video stalls across multiple monitors

When playback repeatedly stops and starts on a multi-monitor setup, check the monitors’ refresh rates and try matching them. Microsoft lists differing refresh rates as a possible cause; matching them is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix for every playback problem.
