How to Find Wi-Fi Dead Zones at Home With a Heat-Map App

A room-by-room Wi-Fi heat map can help show where performance drops: take readings as you move around your home, place them on a floor plan, and compare the weak rooms with a spot near the router. The map is a diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix—and what it measures depends on the app and device. Some map throughput or latency rather than Wi-Fi radio signal strength.

What a Wi-Fi heat map can—and cannot—tell you

A single speed test beside the router says little about a room where video buffers. A heat map lets you associate readings with locations, making it easier to spot a consistent difference between rooms. Depending on the app, those readings may include Wi-Fi signal strength, internet or local throughput, latency, nearby networks, channel use, interference, or gateway response. A speed map is not automatically a radio-signal map.

Buffering alone does not prove that weak Wi-Fi coverage is the cause. A map can help identify a coverage pattern, but it cannot by itself establish why a stream is buffering or guarantee that moving equipment will solve it.

Choose an app based on what you need to measure

App What its listing describes Important qualification
WiFi Heat Map & Analyzer (iPhone) Maps throughput and latency readings placed on a floor plan; can help identify slow rooms and consider router, extender, or mesh-node placement. The US App Store listing says iOS does not let third-party apps read Wi-Fi signal strength or scan neighboring networks. Treat its map as measured performance, not a conventional radio-strength survey. App Store listing
WiFi Heatmap (Android) Its Google Play listing describes mapping signal coverage, connection speed, channels, access-point selection, interference, and gateway ping. The workflow includes uploading a floor plan, setting its scale, and marking readings. The listing reports an update date of April 24, 2026; these are developer-described features, not an independent accuracy assessment. Google Play listing
Wifi Analyzer Pro (Android) Its Google Play listing describes nearby-network and channel analysis, internet and local speed tests, and floor-plan heat maps. The listing reports an update date of April 16, 2026. Its feature descriptions are not comparative test results. Google Play listing
NetSpot NetSpot describes Wi-Fi planning, site surveys, analysis, and troubleshooting, including visualizing possible dead spots and considering access-point placement. Its App Store listing describes heat maps, speed and latency checks, and tracking performance over time. Feature availability may depend on device and plan. NetSpot and its App Store listing

App-store descriptions establish what developers say their apps offer; they do not establish that one app is more accurate than another. Check the current listing and your device’s compatibility before choosing.

How to map the rooms where Wi-Fi buffers

  1. Pick the measurement you need. If the question is whether a room has slow real-world performance, an app that records throughput and latency may be useful. If you want radio coverage or channel information, check that the app and operating system can access those measurements.
  2. Prepare a floor plan. Use a floor-plan image or make a simple sketch. If the app supports scale calibration, set it so the map reflects the relative distances between rooms.
  3. Record a baseline. Connect to your home Wi-Fi and take readings near the router, then in the rooms where buffering occurs. Place each reading at the corresponding location on the plan.
  4. Keep the comparison fair. Use the same phone and test method where practical. Take readings under similar conditions; otherwise, a change in device, network use, or test method could be mistaken for a location effect.
  5. Compare what the app actually recorded. Separate signal strength from throughput, latency, interference, or gateway response. A low throughput result is evidence of slow performance at that test location, not by itself proof of a weak radio signal.
  6. Test one placement change at a time. If readings repeatedly worsen in the same area, try relocating the router or testing another access-point position, then take readings again. If the weak area persists, consider whether an extender or mesh node is compatible with your setup and where it could be placed.

Use the map to choose a next step, not to buy hardware blindly

A repeated weak area can help you decide whether to test router relocation or another access-point location before adding equipment. A mesh system or range extender may be relevant when the map points to a coverage gap, but the right choice depends on the shape and size of the weak area, your current router and service, whether one room or several are affected, and the cost and complexity of adding nodes. The map does not establish a universal winner.

For example, TP-Link documents a Tether-app heat-map workflow that uses a floor plan to plan Deco placement, simulate coverage, and test signal. That is one vendor’s workflow, not a standard shared by every app or a guarantee that a particular placement will work in every home. TP-Link Tether heat-map guidance

Do not confuse a home Wi-Fi dead zone with a cellular coverage gap

The FCC’s National Broadband Map mobile coverage information describes where service should be available outdoors or in a moving vehicle; it does not show indoor coverage. The FCC also says mobile-coverage challenge tests must use the mobile network, not Wi-Fi, and cannot be performed indoors. Those tests are not a substitute for mapping a home router’s Wi-Fi.
