To find Wi-Fi dead zones, test the same device in several rooms, record what happens, then repeat those tests after changing one thing at a time. Start by improving the router’s position and checking whether the issue follows a room or a device; buy an extender or mesh system only if the test pattern points to a coverage problem.
Map where Wi-Fi works—and where it does not
Choose the rooms where you use Wi-Fi for work, calls, streaming, or gaming. In each, use the same device to run several speed checks and note the room, approximate time, download and upload results if available, and what you experienced: no connection, dropouts, lag, buffering, or simply slower service. Repeat tests in the same places after making a change. Microsoft recommends comparing locations and retesting, while Ofcom notes that speeds can vary by time of day and that delay matters for activities such as calls and gaming. Microsoft Support Ofcom

A speed test describes performance at that moment; it does not, by itself, explain the cause. A Wi-Fi analyzer app can add context by showing signal strength and nearby networks. Signal readings are commonly shown in dBm; less-negative readings indicate a stronger signal, but no single reading guarantees that a connection will be usable. Microsoft Support
Work out whether the room or the device is the problem
Compare devices if you can. If several devices have trouble in the same location, weak coverage, walls, or interference are more plausible explanations. If one device struggles in multiple rooms while others work, check that device first: install available updates and inspect its Wi-Fi adapter, settings, case, and orientation before buying networking equipment. These comparisons help narrow the possibilities, but they are not a definitive diagnosis; device capability, distance, layout, and interference can all affect results. Microsoft Support Ofcom

- Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi - Next-gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 whole home mesh system to eliminate weak Wi-Fi for good(2×2/HE160 2402 Mbps plus 2×2 574 Mbps)
- Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
- Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
- Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
Wi-Fi coverage inside the home and the broadband service entering it are related but different checks. If possible, compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection to the router, ideally using the same device and at a similar time. If the wired connection is also slow, the issue may not be limited to wireless coverage; if it works well while a distant room does not, the home Wi-Fi path deserves attention. Device limits, other users, and changing conditions can also affect comparisons, so do not treat one test as conclusive. Ofcom

Move the router into a clearer position
If practical, place the router in an open, elevated, roughly central location. Avoid the floor, a corner, enclosed furniture, or a position where several walls and obstacles sit between it and the devices that need coverage. Keep it away from likely sources of interference such as microwave ovens, cordless phones, and baby monitors. If the router has adjustable antennas, Ofcom suggests pointing them in different directions. Change one thing at a time and rerun the location checks so you can tell whether the change helped. - A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
Review 2.4 GHz channel settings only if needed
If you are comfortable changing router settings, check the router’s documentation and look at nearby network conditions before changing the 2.4 GHz channel. Microsoft identifies channels 1, 6, and 11 as non-overlapping options on that band; none is universally best, because nearby networks matter. If the 2.4 GHz signal is strong and the channel is clear, a 20 MHz channel width may help when a wider setting is causing reliability problems with older adapters. Router menus differ, so do not apply a setting blindly. Microsoft Support

| What your tests show | Option to consider | Trade-offs and setup |
|---|---|---|
| One localized weak room, and moving the router is not practical | Wi-Fi extender | An extender can relay an existing signal toward a targeted area, but it needs a useful signal where it is placed and may reduce speed. Microsoft Support Ofcom |
| Weak coverage across several rooms or floors | Mesh Wi-Fi system | Mesh points can extend coverage across a wider area, but their links and placement matter. Put a point where it can still communicate well with the router or another point—not automatically in the dead zone—and use the system’s connection test. Too many points can make problems worse. Ofcom Google Home Help |
| A stationary device needs reliable service and cable routing is practical | Ethernet | Ofcom says wired connections are usually faster and more reliable. A cable avoids relying on Wi-Fi for that device, but does not improve wireless coverage for other devices. Ofcom |
| An older router or frequent disconnections persist after basic checks | Ask your provider about supported router options | A provider-supplied upgrade may be an option. A self-purchased router can be harder to configure, and the provider may not support it; check compatibility and support before replacing equipment. Ofcom Ofcom |
| You are considering powerline networking to reach another part of the home | Powerline adapter | Results depend on the home’s electrical wiring. Check local safety marks and follow the manufacturer’s instructions; it is not a guaranteed Wi-Fi fix. Ofcom |
Retest to see whether the change worked
Repeat your original checks in the same rooms, with the same device and, where possible, at a similar time. Compare not only speed-test results but the outcome you actually need: a stable call, streaming without buffering, or acceptable game latency. If you added mesh points, run the system’s connection test and reposition points whose link is poor. If the weak spots remain, revisit the room-versus-device comparison and test one other change rather than stacking several unverified fixes. Microsoft Support Ofcom Google Home Help
