YouTube Analytics can show when viewers stop watching a livestream, but it does not identify the song playing or prove that a song made them leave. To find tracks worth investigating, locate audience-drop timestamps in the ended stream’s retention or concurrent-viewer data, match those times to a timestamped playback log, then compare repeated instances and other possible explanations.
What YouTube analytics can—and cannot—tell you
YouTube Studio provides video-level audience-retention information for livestreams. YouTube Help says, “Data in YouTube Analytics is based on Video ID,” and explains that Analytics data is processed and measures different information than Live Control Room data. The Live Control Room offers real-time analytics; post-stream Analytics is available after the stream ends. See YouTube’s guide to live-stream metrics.

Retention and concurrent-viewer reports are timing and audience measures, not song-attribution tools. A drop while a track is playing is a coincidence to investigate—not proof that the track caused viewers to leave. A single dip could reflect many things, including a transition, interruption, visual change, or shift in the audience.
Find candidate drop times in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, open the ended livestream’s video-level Analytics and review its audience-retention report, including the key moments shown for audience retention.
- Look for sustained declines rather than treating one noisy point as meaningful. Note each candidate time in the same elapsed-time basis used by your playback log.
- If available in your workflow, review concurrent viewers over the stream’s timeline as a separate signal. YouTube Help also lists watch time, demographics, playback locations, traffic sources, and devices among its Watch Time reports.
Use the same stream, report, and time window when comparing results. Live Control Room figures and post-stream Analytics are not interchangeable because YouTube says they are processed and measured differently. For a dual-format broadcast, YouTube’s page notes that metrics for just the vertical stream can be selected after the stream has ended at least 24 hours earlier; that timing note applies to the vertical-only workflow described there.

Match audience drops to the songs playing
- Keep a playback log with each track’s start time, preferably in a consistent time basis such as elapsed stream time. If you do not have a log, create one from the playlist or automation schedule, accounting for actual start times, gaps, and interruptions.
- For every candidate audience-drop timestamp, identify which track was playing at that exact point. Convert between clock time and elapsed stream time carefully; a restart, delay, or skipped item can make a planned playlist schedule differ from actual playback.
- Record the track, timestamp, the audience measure you used, and any relevant event nearby, such as a track transition, stream interruption, or visual change.
This is a manual timestamp match. YouTube’s documented reports do not automatically name the song at a retention dip. Its Analytics API offers time-based audience-retention data, including a stoppedWatching measure by video segment. It also offers a separate concurrent-viewers report by stream position, generally representing a single minute. The API describes position and audience measures, not song-level attribution. Details are in Google’s documentation for Analytics and Reporting API dimensions and YouTube Analytics API channel reports.
Use the Analytics API for repeatable comparisons
The API is useful when you want to examine time-based data consistently across videos or build a repeatable analysis. The audience-retention report requires a single video filter and uses elapsed video time as its position dimension. The separate concurrent-viewers report uses stream position. Neither route removes the need to match timestamps to your playback record.

Test whether a track is a plausible factor
- Look for repetition: check whether similar declines follow the same song on multiple occasions, rather than relying on one occurrence.
- Compare like with like: account for differences in time of day, audience, stream conditions, and track placement where possible.
- Check competing explanations: note interruptions, visual changes, transitions, or other events near the drop.
- Make one measured change: if a similar decline repeatedly follows the track under comparable conditions, try changing its placement or replacing it, then review later comparable periods.
This process can strengthen or weaken a correlation, but it is not a YouTube-provided causal test. Do not conclude that a song caused departures from a single coincident dip.
