Check those first, then review Remote Start, voice-device behavior and the remote control. The exact options vary by TV model and software, so use the manual or support page for your model when a menu item is missing.
What does the timing of the power-on suggest?
- It happens at roughly the same time: Check the TV’s On timer or Timer setting.
- It happens when another connected device starts: Check HDMI-CEC settings on the TV and that device.
- It seems random: Check the timer, Remote Start if available, voice-device settings, and the remote for a stuck button.
These patterns help narrow the checks; they do not identify a cause on their own.

Check the On timer or Timer first
A timer can turn on a TV from standby. Sony’s US troubleshooting guidance recommends checking and disabling On timer or Timer when a BRAVIA turns on automatically. The setting is not available on every model, and the menu path depends on the TV’s software generation. Sony’s model-specific instructions are at The BRAVIA TV turns on or off automatically.
On Google TV, Sony’s instructions start from Quick Settings and direct you to On timer or Timer. Android TV and older televisions can use different paths and labels. Follow the instructions for your exact model rather than applying a button sequence from another Sony TV.

Could an HDMI device be turning the TV on?
Yes. HDMI-CEC lets compatible audio and video devices send control commands to one another, including power commands. Sony uses the names BRAVIA Sync, BRAVIA Link and CONTROL for HDMI for its HDMI-CEC feature. Its BRAVIA Sync overview and troubleshooting information explains the feature; Sony’s current automatic-power guidance recommends checking the TV’s auto-power-on option under BRAVIA Sync or HDMI-CEC settings.
- Note whether the TV turns on when a connected player, receiver or other HDMI device is powered up.
- On the TV, locate BRAVIA Sync, HDMI-CEC or CONTROL for HDMI settings. Names and paths vary by model.
- Check the connected device’s CEC or device-control setting as well.
- If needed, temporarily disable the TV’s auto-power-on or CEC control and see whether the behavior stops. This can also prevent intended device-control functions, so restore the setting if you want those features.
Review Remote Start and voice-device settings
Sony lists Remote Start as a setting to check on Android TV models that offer it. If the TV has this option, test with it disabled and see whether the unwanted power-ons stop. Do not assume the setting exists on Google TV or older models; check the model’s manual.

A voice remote or smart speaker can also mistake nearby conversation for a command. If one is part of your setup, review its settings and whether it may be triggering the TV. This is a possibility to investigate, not proof that voice control is responsible.

Sony’s general instructions for a device that turns on by itself advise checking the remote for stuck buttons. Inspect the buttons and make sure none is held down or sticking. A replacement remote is relevant only if the existing one appears faulty; it will not address a timer or HDMI-CEC setting.

Sony also recommends unplugging the device from the AC outlet for 60 seconds, reconnecting it and testing again. See The TV or projector turns on by itself for Sony’s general steps. Because that guidance covers projectors as well as TVs, use your TV’s model-specific instructions for any additional procedure.

Sony recommends checking for a TV software update because an update may fix a specific issue. Use the support page for your TV model to find the applicable update and instructions. Sony notes that settings and their availability differ across models, so consult the model manual if a menu item described in general guidance is absent.

If the TV still powers on after you have checked the relevant settings and remote, consult Sony support for your model. Sony says service may be required when its troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem.
