For public tap water, start with your water supplier’s annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR). For rivers and lakes, search EPA’s How’s My Waterway, then check the state or local agency for newer results. For beaches, use the responsible jurisdiction’s beach program. To follow pollution cleanup, search EPA’s Superfund and Cleanups in My Community pages and read the site’s latest documents and updates.
The right source depends on whether you mean treated tap water, a river or lake, swimming conditions, or a cleanup site. Search with an address, supplier, waterbody, county, or site name; without a location, no specific local result or agency can be identified.

Look for the supplier’s Consumer Confidence Report. It may also be called an annual drinking-water quality report. Community water systems must provide one each year by July 1, according to EPA’s CCR Information for Consumers. If you did not receive it, contact the supplier or use EPA’s CCR search tool.

Check what the report covers. A CCR describes the source of water, contaminants detected during the reporting period, relevant health effects when a detected contaminant violated an EPA health standard, and the system’s response. It also says whether the system meets state and EPA drinking-water standards.
-
Follow up on violations or monitoring questions. Contact the supplier and your state drinking-water agency. EPA’s How’s My Waterway includes community drinking-water information drawn from the Safe Drinking Water Information System, but the supplier’s CCR is the annual report intended for consumers.

A CCR applies to the public water system and reporting period named in that document. It does not test the plumbing inside an individual home, and it does not establish the quality of a private well. The sources here do not identify a private-well testing schedule or laboratory; those depend on local jurisdiction and circumstances.

Open the underlying result and note its date, location, and purpose. A sample, impairment listing, or assessment has a particular meaning and time period; none is automatically a real-time, universal safety test. For example, a result assessed for “Drinking Water” use concerns raw water before treatment, not water to drink directly from a river or lake.
-
If information is missing or old, follow the state water-program link or contact the relevant state or local environmental agency. EPA notes that newer or more detailed information may not yet be available in its databases.

Check beach and swimming conditions
Use EPA’s beach program contacts directory to reach the state, territorial, Tribal, or EPA program responsible for the beach. Ask for current test results, advisories, and open or closed status. Jurisdictions report decisions and related data to EPA on differing schedules, so the local program’s own current notice is the most direct source for today’s conditions.

Interpret progress labels narrowly. EPA defines construction completion as completion of required physical construction; it does not by itself mean final cleanup levels have been achieved. A five-year review evaluates whether a remedy remains protective when contaminants are still above levels allowing unrestricted use. Read the site-specific review and advisories for remaining work, exposure controls, and current conditions.
Compare results without conflating them
When two pages appear to disagree, first check whether they describe the same water, place, period, and use. A utility report for treated water is not directly comparable to a river assessment, and an older monitoring result may not reflect a current beach advisory.
Quick Recap
- What is being described? Treated tap water, raw source water, a river or lake, a beach, or conditions at a cleanup site.
- Who collected or reported it? A utility, state or Tribal agency, EPA, or another monitoring partner.
- When does it apply? Check the sample or assessment date, reporting period, and whether the page is a current operational notice or a historical record.
- What was measured or assessed? Identify the contaminant, impairment, intended water use, applicable standard, or advisory rather than treating a general status label as a complete result.
- For cleanups, which part of the site and which milestone? Check the program, site or operable unit, cleanup phase, milestone and date, latest review, and stated exposure controls.
