Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIn Selenium, find an element with a locator in the browser’s current frame and window, wait until it is in the state you need, perform the matching action, and inspect the result. Use find_element() for one match, find_elements() for a collection, and explicit waits for dynamic pages rather than assuming navigation means every element is ready.
Find an element with a locator
Selenium searches the current browsing context—the active page or frame—using a locator. Common choices include an element’s ID or name, a CSS selector, and XPath. Choose a locator that is specific and stable in the page you are automating; a class name may match many elements, so check whether it identifies the intended control uniquely.
find_element() returns the first matching element. find_elements() returns all matches as a list, including an empty list when nothing matches.
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
first_result = driver.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, ".result")
all_results = driver.find_elements(By.CSS_SELECTOR, ".result")
for result in all_results:
print(result.text)
When a selector matches repeated items, narrow the search to a known parent component or inspect the matches’ text and attributes to identify the one you want.

Interact with the element using the right operation
Use click() for a pointer action, send_keys() for keyboard input into a keyboard-interactable control such as a text field, and clear() to empty an editable, resettable control. For a form, Selenium’s interaction guidance recommends clicking the applicable submit button rather than calling submit().
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
text_box = driver.find_element(By.NAME, "my-text")
submit_button = driver.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, "button")
text_box.clear()
text_box.send_keys("Selenium")
submit_button.click()
message = driver.find_element(By.ID, "message")
print(message.text)
This follows the pattern in Selenium’s official Python first-script example: locate the input and button, enter text, click, then locate and read the result. Use the locator and text appropriate to the page you are automating.
For a native HTML select control, Selenium provides a Select support class; use the official Select documentation for its specific methods rather than treating a select as an ordinary text field.

Wait for the state you need
A navigation reaching its configured document readyState does not guarantee that JavaScript-created content is present or usable. Fixed sleeps can be too short on a slow run and waste time on a fast one. Prefer an explicit wait for the condition the next action requires: presence, visibility, or clickability are different conditions.
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
button = WebDriverWait(driver, 10).until(
EC.element_to_be_clickable((By.ID, "continue"))
)
button.click()
The timeout here is the maximum time Selenium waits for that condition; it is not a guarantee that the element will become clickable. If the condition is not met, the wait raises a timeout error, which you should diagnose rather than bypass blindly.
Selenium also supports implicit waits, which apply globally to element searches. Its wait guidance warns against mixing implicit and explicit waits because the combined total waiting time can become unpredictable. Prefer a consistent wait strategy, usually condition-specific explicit waits for dynamic interactions.

Read text, attributes, and element state
Use .text for rendered text. If the value you need is stored in an attribute—such as an input’s current value—read that named attribute instead:
value = text_box.get_attribute("value")
label = message.text
visible = message.is_displayed()
enabled = submit_button.is_enabled()
is_displayed() and is_enabled() are useful checks, but displayed-state evaluation is an approximation implemented with JavaScript; it is not a perfect test of whether a person can see or use an element in every circumstance.
Search inside an iframe or another window
Iframe
Element lookups do not automatically search inside an iframe. Locate the frame, switch into it, then find its child elements. Switch back to the top-level page when finished.

from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
frame = driver.find_element(By.ID, "payment-frame")
driver.switch_to.frame(frame)
card_field = driver.find_element(By.NAME, "card-number")
# Return to the top-level document before searching there again.
driver.switch_to.default_content()
Selenium also supports switching to a frame by its name or ID, or by index. Prefer a frame element or a meaningful name/ID when available so the target is clear.
New tab or window
When an action opens a new tab or window, save the original handle, wait for the expected number of handles, and switch to the new one before looking up its elements. After closing it, switch back to the original handle.
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
original = driver.current_window_handle
# Perform the action that opens a new tab or window here.
WebDriverWait(driver, 10).until(
lambda d: len(d.window_handles) == 2
)
new_handle = next(
handle for handle in driver.window_handles if handle != original
)
driver.switch_to.window(new_handle)
# Find and use elements in the new window here.
driver.close()
driver.switch_to.window(original)
The expected handle count should reflect the page’s actual behavior if it may open more than one window.

Troubleshoot common element problems
- No such element: Check that the locator matches the intended element and that the page has reached the required state. If the content is dynamic, wait for its presence. If it is inside a frame or different window, switch to that browsing context before searching.
- More than one match or the wrong item:
find_element()selects the first match. Make the locator more specific, scope the search to a parent, or inspect the results returned byfind_elements(). - Click intercepted: Selenium clicks the element’s center; an overlay covering that point can intercept the click. Check for a cookie prompt, modal, or other overlay, and wait for the intended control and page state before retrying. A JavaScript click is not a universal fix: it can bypass the interaction checks Selenium applies to a normal click.
- Element found but not ready: Presence alone does not mean an element is visible or clickable. Wait for the condition required by the next action and check whether the control is enabled.
- Text or value appears empty: Confirm whether the data is rendered text or stored in an attribute. Read rendered text with
.textand an input value withget_attribute("value"). - Element search fails in a frame or tab: Confirm the active browsing context. Switch into the iframe or new window before searching, then return to the original context when done.

If you need a website screenshot rather than Selenium-driven interaction, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF. This cURL example requests a WebP capture of Stripe; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for options and API details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between find_element() and find_elements() in Selenium Python?
find_element() returns the first match; find_elements() returns a list of all matches and returns an empty list when there are none.
Should I use an implicit wait or an explicit wait?
Use an explicit wait when the next action depends on a particular condition. Selenium warns that mixing implicit and explicit waits can make total wait times unpredictable.
Why can Selenium find an element but still fail to click it?
Finding an element does not establish that it is clickable. It may be hidden, disabled, or covered at its center by an overlay; wait for the relevant state and inspect the page context.
