Decide whether you want a film or a series, animation or live action, and a mood such as post-apocalyptic drama, fantasy, science fiction, comedy or family adventure. Then check how closely the screen story follows its game, read critic and audience reactions separately, and confirm availability in your country immediately before watching.
Start with the viewing experience you want
A useful search begins with your evening, not with a franchise. A feature film gives you a contained story in roughly one sitting. A series gives characters and world-building more room, but it asks for several hours and may end between seasons. Animation can be family-friendly, stylized or intensely adult; live action can range from grounded drama to broad comedy.

Choose a format
- Film: Choose this when you want a complete adventure tonight. Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog are approachable feature-film starting points.
- Series: Choose this when you want a longer character arc or a richer fictional world. The Last of Us, Fallout and Arcane are substantially different kinds of series, so “TV adaptation” alone is not a useful genre label.
- Animation: Do not treat it as a children’s category. Arcane and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners demonstrate how far apart animated adaptations can be in tone and audience.
- Live action: Check the age rating, violence, horror and language before assuming a familiar game makes a show suitable for everyone.
Choose a mood or genre
| If you want… | Try starting with… | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Character-driven post-apocalyptic drama | The Last of Us | A relationship-focused adaptation built around survival, loss and difficult choices. |
| Retro-futurist science fiction | Fallout | A new story inside the games’ continuity, with dark humor and an expansive setting. |
| Animated fantasy and action | Arcane | Set in the League of Legends universe and designed to work beyond the game’s player base. |
| Adult science-fiction anime | Cyberpunk: Edgerunners | A ten-episode story in the wider Cyberpunk 2077 universe. |
| Family-oriented mystery adventure | Detective Pikachu | A film entry point into the Pokémon world without requiring game knowledge. |
| Lighter adventure and comedy | Sonic the Hedgehog | A feature-film introduction to Sega’s character and world. |
| Animated treasure-hunting adventure | Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft | A series centered on Lara Croft, with Netflix listing two seasons. |
These are starting points, not a universal ranking. Your preferred format, tolerance for violence and interest in the source material matter more than a list ordered from “best” to “worst.”
Understand what “adaptation” means before you compare titles
Two screen projects can both be called video-game adaptations while doing fundamentally different things. Identifying the relationship to the game prevents a common disappointment: expecting a scene-for-scene retelling from a show that was created to expand the game’s world instead.
#1 Best Overall
- Enhanced visuals: Completely rebuilt from the ground up using Naughty Dog’s latest PS5 engine technology to improve every visual detail, The Last of Us experience has been faithfully enhanced with more realistic lighting and atmosphere, more intricate environments and creative reimaginings of familiar spaces.
- Fast loading: Initial loading times are near instant, and seamless after the first instance thanks to the PS5 console’s SSD – so you can pick up where you left off in the story and load specific encounters and chapters more quickly.
- Haptic feedback: DualSense wireless controller haptic feedback support for every weapon elevates combat encounters, and environments are brought to life through DualSense wireless controller haptic sensations of subtle falling rain, the crunch of stepping on snow and more.
- Adaptive triggers: All The Last of Us iconic weapons, including Joel’s revolver and Ellie’s bow, now deliver dynamic DualSense wireless controller trigger resistance and kickback on firing for deeper combat immersion.
- 3D Audio: Designed to make use of the PS5 console’s Tempest 3D AudioTech, Naughty Dog’s newly upgraded audio engine delivers richer soundscapes, bigger explosive moments and more visceral gameplay through compatible stereo headphones (analogue or USB) or TV speakers.
Close retelling
A close retelling follows recognisable plot beats, characters and themes from a particular game. This can be ideal when you want to revisit a story in another medium. The Last of Us is often discussed in this category because its source has a comparatively linear narrative. Even then, an adaptation can rearrange events, add material or change emphasis; “close” does not mean identical.
New story in the game’s continuity
Some adaptations use the setting, history and rules of a game while telling a new story. TIME’s comparison of Fallout and The Last of Us highlights this distinction: the role-playing game series has branching possibilities and broad world-building, so the television series expands its continuity rather than reproducing one player’s path. This approach can welcome newcomers while giving experienced players details to recognise.
Related franchise, different source
The Witcher needs special care in a guide about game adaptations. Netflix describes its television series as based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels. Those novels also inspired a video-game series, but the Netflix show is not a direct adaptation of the games. If you are seeking a screen version of game events, place it in a separate “related franchise” category.
Why the distinction affects your choice
- Choose a close retelling if familiar story beats are the main attraction.
- Choose a new continuity story if you want an accessible entry point and a larger world.
- Choose a related franchise only if you are comfortable with the screen project having a different primary source.
Use critic and audience scores as separate clues
Review aggregators can narrow a long list, but a percentage is not a verdict and it can change. Rotten Tomatoes reports separate Tomatometer scores from critics and Popcornmeter scores from audiences. It also lists scores by season, which matters when reception changes between installments.
| Title and season | Tomatometer | Popcornmeter | Snapshot qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arcane: League of Legends, season 2 | 100% | 81% | Rotten Tomatoes guide snapshot dated December 18, 2025; ratings can change. |
| The Last of Us, season 1 | 96% | 86% | Rotten Tomatoes guide snapshot dated December 18, 2025; ratings can change. |
| Fallout, season 1 | 93% | 95% | Rotten Tomatoes guide snapshot dated December 18, 2025; ratings can change. |
Read the two numbers diagnostically. A large gap may indicate that critics and fans value different qualities, while similar numbers suggest broader agreement at that moment. Neither score tells you whether the title suits your age, preferred tone or tolerance for horror. Check the season you intend to watch rather than quoting a franchise-wide figure.
Shortlist adaptations by what you want to watch
The Last of Us: intimate post-apocalyptic drama
This series is the strongest starting point for viewers who want a serious, character-led survival story rather than a parade of game references. Its central appeal is the evolving relationship between its leads and the pressure that a dangerous world places on that relationship. Associated Press reporting found that viewers who had not played the game could still become invested, illustrating that game knowledge is optional.
The show’s episodic structure gives individual emotional turns room to land. It is still a harsh post-apocalyptic story, so check its age rating and content warnings before watching with younger viewers. If you enjoy it, the game is an optional way to explore the source material—not required homework.

Fallout: retro-futurist science fiction with a new story
Choose Fallout when you want darkly comic science fiction, strange technology and a setting that feels larger than any single protagonist. TIME describes the series as operating within the continuity of the games while welcoming both longtime players and newcomers. You do not need to know the games’ branching role-playing systems to follow the show.
Its structure makes it a useful contrast with The Last of Us. Rather than asking television to reproduce one linear campaign, it uses the franchise’s history and visual language to create a parallel narrative. That makes it suitable for viewers who prefer discovery and world-building to a close retelling.
Rank #2
- The Last of Us Remastered Standard Edition
Arcane: animated fantasy rooted in League of Legends
Arcane is an animated action-fantasy series whose characters and setting come from League of Legends. Virgin Media’s guide presents it as accessible even to people who have not played the game, and Rotten Tomatoes lists positive critic reception for both seasons. The show’s political conflict, family relationships and visual design carry the experience without requiring you to know game mechanics.
Use the season-specific scores rather than assuming that every season was received identically. Animation does not make it automatically suitable for children; check the rating and themes for your household.
Detective Pikachu: a newcomer-friendly Pokémon mystery
This feature film is a practical choice when you want a self-contained adventure with mystery and comedy. It is set in the Pokémon universe but does not require a player to understand a particular game campaign. Virgin Media presents it as a newcomer-friendly route into that world.
Its lighter tone makes it a useful first experiment for families, although you should still check the local age classification. Do not use one Pokémon film to predict the tone of every adaptation in the franchise; individual projects can target different audiences.
Sonic the Hedgehog: accessible adventure comedy
Sonic the Hedgehog offers a lighter feature-film entry point based on Sega’s long-running character. It combines adventure and comedy and is easier to sample in one evening than a multi-season series. Virgin Media includes it among approachable adaptations, while Rotten Tomatoes lists it as one possible starting point.
Think of it as a choice for its particular film tone, not as a representative summary of every Sonic adaptation. If your priority is a serious or adult drama, choose another title on this list.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: adult science-fiction anime
Netflix’s guide describes this as a ten-episode anime set in the larger Cyberpunk 2077 universe. It suits viewers looking for intense science-fiction animation and a compact episodic commitment. The connection to the game is primarily world and setting rather than a retelling of the player’s campaign, so prior game knowledge is optional.
Because the series is aimed at adults, review its content rating and warnings before recommending it to younger viewers. Its animated format should not be mistaken for a family recommendation.
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft: animated adventure
This animated series centers on Lara Croft and offers a longer-form alternative to a single Tomb Raider film. Netflix lists two seasons. It is a natural fit for viewers who want exploration, relics and action in an episodic format.
Before starting, decide whether you want an adaptation that follows a specific game plot or simply a new Lara Croft adventure. The series should be evaluated on that basis rather than by demanding that it reproduce every game level.

The Witcher: keep the source relationship clear
Include The Witcher only when your definition of “video-game adaptation” includes franchises that reached television through another source. Netflix states that the series is based on Sapkowski’s novels, which were later adapted into games. It can appeal to fantasy viewers, but it is not the direct screen adaptation of the game trilogy that some searchers may expect.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make game knowledge optional
You can recommend an adaptation to a non-player without hiding its relationship to the game. Explain the minimum context needed, then let the reader decide whether to play afterward. Associated Press reporting on The Last of Us describes viewers who had not played the game becoming invested in the series. It also quotes creator Neil Druckmann saying, “It’s my love for video games, it’s paramount. The stuff that’s exciting to me is we’re always trying to do something new, because the language of what a video game story can be, is broader than any other medium.”
The point is not that creator involvement guarantees quality. It is that adaptation works best when the screen version understands which elements must be preserved and which can change. Tucker, creator of the YouTube channel Lessons from the Screenplay, told AP: “I think, because it’s focused on those character arcs and relationships, and how the story world puts pressure to force those forward, those things are really accessible and universal.” Treat that as an explanation of one series’ accessibility, not a promise that every adaptation will work for every viewer.
Check availability without making assumptions
Streaming rights vary by country, change over time and can differ between seasons. Virgin Media’s recommendations describe UK viewing routes, not worldwide availability. Netflix Tudum’s listings describe Netflix’s own catalog, not every service in every region.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Identify your country before opening a recommendation list.
- Check the current catalog of the service named for that title.
- Search a current local streaming guide for other legal services, rentals or purchases.
- Confirm the exact season, subtitle or dub and age classification.
- Recheck immediately before watching; a title can leave a catalog after an article is published.
Do not infer global access from a UK listing or from a Netflix page that is unavailable in your market. Availability is a practical filter, not a quality score.
Build a personal watchlist in five minutes
- Write your constraint: “one film tonight,” “a weekend series,” “animation,” “family viewing” or “adult horror.”
- Pick two or three candidates: choose across different adaptation relationships so you are not comparing identical projects.
- Check content: verify age rating, violence, horror, language and themes.
- Read reception separately: note critic and audience scores, season by season, with the date of the snapshot.
- Confirm access: check your region and the exact season before committing.
If you are still undecided, choose the title whose format and tone match your available time. A highly rated series is a poor recommendation for someone who wants a complete story in one sitting.
Common mistakes when searching
- Searching only for “best”: this hides whether the result is a film, series, animation or a particular genre.
- Equating fidelity with quality: a close retelling and a new story in the same continuity can both succeed for different audiences.
- Combining critic and audience scores: keep the two measures separate; they answer different questions.
- Quoting an undated score: ratings change as reviews and audience votes are added.
- Assuming game knowledge is required: several adaptations are designed to welcome newcomers.
- Calling every related franchise a game adaptation: distinguish direct adaptations from projects based on novels or other source material.
- Assuming one franchise has one tone: a family film, adult anime and serious drama can all come from game properties.
- Trusting old availability information: regional catalogs and rights change.
A simple decision framework
| Your priority | Best first question | Useful direction |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum emotional investment | Do I want a relationship-led drama? | Start with The Last of Us. |
| World-building and dark humor | Do I prefer a new story in an established game continuity? | Start with Fallout. |
| Stylized animation | Do I want fantasy action or adult science fiction? | Choose Arcane for fantasy; choose Cyberpunk: Edgerunners for adult science fiction. |
| A contained, lighter watch | Do I want a family-friendly mystery or comedy adventure? | Try Detective Pikachu or Sonic the Hedgehog, subject to local ratings. |
| Adventure in episodes | Do I want Lara Croft and an animated format? | Try Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. |
| Fantasy connected indirectly to games | Am I comfortable with a novel-based series? | Consider The Witcher, but do not label it a direct game adaptation. |
There is no stable statistic showing what percentage of video-game adaptations are “worth watching.” Recommendation counts, critic scores and audience scores measure different things. The reliable method is to match format, tone, source relationship, accessibility, reception and regional availability to the individual viewer.
