How to Find Verified Impact Craters Near You

Use Impact Earth’s interactive map to look for recorded impact craters and deposits near a place you choose. Treat a map entry as a documented record, not a guarantee that a circular feature in satellite imagery is an impact site: confirmation depends on geological evidence, and local access must be checked separately before a visit.

Find recorded impact structures on the map

  1. Open Impact Earth’s interactive map of impact craters and deposits.

  2. Zoom to the town, region, or coordinates you care about, then inspect nearby map pins. The map provides controls for layers, diameter, and other filters, which can help narrow what you see.

  3. Open an entry and check its name, location, and record details. NASA’s Johnson Space Center describes impact-database records as including structure names, locations, coordinates, ages, and diameters. Its downloadable list is an older snapshot; use the interactive map for current exploration.

No location was provided here, so a particular nearest structure cannot be named. The result depends on the place you enter and the records shown for that area.

What makes a crater “verified”?

A round outline or depression is a useful reason to investigate, but it is not proof of impact. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) cautions: “There are many natural processes other than impacts that can create circular features and depressions on the surface of the Earth.” Its examples include glaciation, volcanism, sinkholes, atolls, salt domes, intrusions, hydrothermal explosions, and mines or quarries.

For a suspected new structure, USGS points readers to the University of New Brunswick Planetary and Space Science Centre as a resource for confirmation. Relevant impact indicators include shatter cones, high-pressure mineral polymorphs, and impact melt breccias. Establishing those geological criteria takes more than a map view or a satellite-image impression.

Use satellite images as clues, not confirmation

Satellite imagery can help someone notice a candidate feature. NASA’s account of the Uhackatik impact structure describes an amateur spotting a feature while planning a trip; confirming it then required research and investigation. Label an unlisted circular feature a “candidate” or “possible structure” until qualified evidence supports an impact origin.

NASA’s September 15, 2026 account of Uhackatik puts the global total at roughly 200 confirmed impact structures on Earth. That is an approximate count reported in that article, not an exact or permanent total; confirmed discoveries and database records can change.
