The most reliable way to follow an unreleased game is to start with its official store page, then check the developer or publisher’s latest announcement feed. Wishlist the game when the platform supports it, add crowdfunding updates for crowdfunded projects, and use release calendars only to discover titles or spot possible changes. Before you plan around a date, verify its wording, age and source.
Start with the official store page
An official store listing is usually the best first record of a game’s public status. Search for the title on the platform where you intend to play it and inspect the release information, developer name, publisher name, recent news and community links. A store page can reveal whether the project is listed as available, in development, or “Coming Soon,” and it gives you a stable place to return when other posts become difficult to find.

For Steam games, the Steamworks Coming Soon guidance describes a page that can carry announcements and artwork before launch. That makes the page useful for more than a date: it can show whether the team is still publishing updates and where those updates appear.

- Confirm that the page is for the correct game, not a similarly named project or an older version.
- Check the listed developer and publisher against the names used in recent announcements.
- Read the latest posts rather than relying on the first date you see in a search result.
- Look for a platform-specific listing if the game is announced for more than one system.
Use a wishlist as a release reminder
On Steam, Valve says that a wishlist can trigger an email when the developer releases the game. Adding a title therefore gives you a practical notification mechanism instead of requiring you to remember to check manually. A wishlist is not evidence that a date is firm, and it does not replace reading the latest announcement; it is a way to reduce the chance of missing the launch.

If the store offers a follow, notify or wishlist control, use it after confirming that the listing is official. Keep notifications enabled for the account or email address you actually monitor. If you use several storefronts, repeat the check on each relevant official listing because availability and timing can differ by platform.
Check the developer and publisher’s own announcements
A store page may lag behind a news post, especially when a team changes a target. Find the developer’s or publisher’s official news feed, website, blog, community page or social account from links on the store listing. Prefer channels that identify the project clearly and show a publication date.
Read announcements in reverse chronological order and look for language that supersedes an older statement. A newer post saying that the team is still targeting a year, season or quarter should be treated as the current position even if an older store description contains a more specific day. Save the link or title of the post you relied on so you can compare it with future updates.
Project announcements illustrate why a date must be read in context. One developer announcement described a January goal that could change depending on publisher support. Another Steam announcement said that a team had a 2026 goal but could not yet provide an exact date. Those statements are project-specific examples, not rules about how every developer schedules a launch.

Evaluate an announcement before treating it as current
- Identify the author. A named developer, studio or publisher has more authority about its own schedule than an unaffiliated calendar.
- Check the timestamp. Record the publication date and whether a later post addresses the same milestone.
- Read the whole qualification. Words such as “target,” “aim,” “planned,” “if,” or “subject to” signal a goal rather than a locked appointment.
- Separate milestones. Early access, a demo, a console edition, a full release and a regional launch may each have a different date.
- Keep the original wording. Do not turn “late 2027” into a specific month or convert “2026 goal” into a day that was never announced.
Understand what different date labels mean
Release information has a precision ladder. A calendar day is the narrowest statement, but it can still change. A season, quarter or year communicates a wider window. “Target” and “planned” describe intent, while “coming soon” indicates that a page exists without giving a useful schedule.

Steamworks documents that developers can choose a calendar date or a less precise timeframe for an upcoming release. Its release-date guidance also explains that the setting communicates when players might expect a game and can affect upcoming-release listings. The setting is therefore informative, but it should still be read alongside the developer’s latest statement.
Follow crowdfunding updates when a game is crowdfunded
A crowdfunding campaign is another first-party source because the project team normally posts progress, schedule changes and backer information there. Open the campaign’s updates tab and read the newest posts, not only the original pitch. Campaign FAQs can state a target and explain how often the team expects to communicate.

- Check whether the update applies to all players or only backers.
- Distinguish delivery of rewards from public release.
- Look for dependencies such as a publisher, certification, platform approval or additional funding.
- Use the campaign’s update date when deciding whether a target is still current.
Use release calendars and trackers for discovery
Editorial roundups can save time when you are looking for upcoming games across many studios. For example, GamesRadar’s upcoming PC games list organizes announced PC titles and their stated windows. Such pages are useful for finding names, grouping games by period and noticing that a title has appeared on a new list.
They are not the final authority. Calendar editors may have collected a date before the developer changed it, or they may summarize a broad window as a shorter label. Use the following two-stage method:
- Use a calendar or tracker to discover the game and the source it cites.
- Open the official store page or latest developer announcement.
- Compare the date wording, platform and publication timestamps.
- Use the official wording in your own notes and planning.
Community tools and database services, including those often mentioned by players when asking about indie release dates, can help you notice changes or find obscure listings. Treat them as indexes, not confirmation, unless you can trace the entry to a current official source. A tracker that shows an exact day without linking to a dated developer statement should not outrank a first-party page that gives only a season or year.

Authority comes first when a third-party calendar is newer only because it edited its entry after copying an old announcement. Recency matters when an official post explicitly changes the plan. Precision matters only after you have established that the precise statement is both official and current.
Track a game without losing the date’s context
A small record prevents the most common mistake: remembering a number while forgetting what it described. Use a note, spreadsheet or calendar entry with these fields:
- Game title and edition: include early access, expansion or remake where relevant.
- Platform: record PC, console or storefront separately.
- Current wording: copy “October 2026,” “Q2 2027,” “late 2027” or the exact day as written.
- Status: announced, target, delayed, coming soon or released.
- Source: official store page, developer post, publisher announcement or campaign update.
- Source date: the date the statement was published or last updated.
- Next check: choose a reminder after a showcase, milestone or the end of the stated window.
Do not silently overwrite an old entry. Mark it superseded and add the newer statement. That makes it obvious whether a game moved from a month to a season, from a year to an undated delay, or from a target to a confirmed launch.
Verify dates separately for each platform
A game announced for PC and consoles can have different storefront pages, certification schedules and launch windows. The available evidence for Steam does not establish the current tracking features or date behavior of every console storefront, so verify each platform independently.
- Open the official listing for the platform you intend to use.
- Check whether the date is stated on that platform’s page or only in a general announcement.
- Look for separate wording for early access, console launch and full release.
- Subscribe to the platform’s available notification feature, if offered.
- Return to the developer’s latest announcement to confirm that the platform date has not changed.
If only one platform has a precise day, report the other as its actual window rather than applying the day to all versions.
What to do when a release date changes
Delays are easier to understand when you compare the old and new statements instead of treating every calendar change as a contradiction. A developer may replace a day with a season, keep the same year while removing a month, or explain that a target depends on publisher support. These are schedule updates, not evidence that the project has been cancelled.
When the store and announcement disagree
- Use the newest dated official statement if it clearly addresses the release.
- Check whether the store page has an update timestamp or an automatically generated field.
- Look for a separate announcement for a delay, early-access launch or platform edition.
- Do not report the older date as confirmed merely because it is more precise.
When there is no new date
Record the last confirmed window and state that no newer exact date has been announced. “No date announced” is more accurate than guessing from a trailer, a convention appearance or a retailer entry. Continue following the official feed and keep the wishlist active.

Check for a launch announcement, a silent store-page change, a delay notice or a new platform-specific post. A passed target does not prove cancellation. If the official channels have not clarified the status, label the project as awaiting an updated date rather than moving it to released or cancelled.
A repeatable weekly routine
You do not need to monitor every channel every day. A short routine keeps your list current while preserving source quality.
- Discover. Scan a reputable editorial calendar or community list for newly announced titles and changed windows.
- Verify. Open the official store page and the developer or publisher’s newest dated post.
- Subscribe. Wishlist or follow the title on the relevant store, and follow the official news channel.
- Check campaigns. For crowdfunded projects, read the latest campaign update and FAQ.
- Record. Save the exact wording, platform, source and publication date.
- Review exceptions. Recheck games whose target window is approaching, has passed, or depends on a stated condition.
- Clean your list. Mark released games, superseded dates and projects that have moved to an unspecified window.
During a major showcase or publisher event, perform the verification step again. Trailers and presentations often repeat a previously announced target, but repetition alone does not make the target more precise.

On Steam, wishlist the game so Valve can email you when the developer releases it. Finally, preserve the date’s precision and qualification: a day, season, year, target and “coming soon” label are different kinds of information.
