To find a series that feels like one you already love, search for three things separately: its comedy-and-drama balance, the kind of team at its center, and the tone you want. “Dramedy” is a useful starting term, but genre tags alone will not tell you whether a new show has the relationships, stakes, or style of teamwork you are looking for.
Start by describing what you want to repeat
Before searching, name the ingredients that made your reference show work for you. This turns “something similar” into useful search terms and makes it easier to judge recommendations.

Use “dramedy” for the genre blend
“Dramedy” is a practical term for a series that mixes comedy and drama. JustWatch’s US dramedy guide provides a category to explore. Treat it as a first pass rather than a precise match: the label does not say how much humor or emotional weight a particular series has.

Think about what made the group compelling, then use that as a separate search prompt. Was it colleagues solving problems together, friends or family facing a shared challenge, a close-knit ensemble, or a group whose friction gradually gives way to trust? These are ways to describe the dynamic you want, not guarantees that a particular title will deliver it.
#1 Best Overall
Decide how the tone should feel
Consider whether you want humor to lead, emotional stakes to carry much of the story, or a noticeable shift between funny and serious moments. A comedy-and-drama category can include all of these balances, so it helps to decide which one suits your next watch.
Use more than one route to find candidates
Different recommendation tools answer different questions. Some suggest titles related to a show; others use your viewing activity to personalize picks. Try both rather than expecting one list to capture every part of the match.
Explore title-based suggestions in IMDb
IMDb’s “More Like This” section suggests titles using information that includes genre, country of origin, and actors. IMDb notes that the suggestions can differ by device and that newer titles may take time to appear while the service gathers more information. Use the feature to discover possibilities, then check whether each one matches the team and tone you described. See IMDb’s explanation of “More Like This”.
Try personalized picks in IMDb
IMDb Top Picks use your ratings and watchlist activity and compare them with ratings from people who have similar tastes, according to IMDb’s What to Watch FAQ, updated September 2, 2025. This is a different route from finding titles similar to one specific series: it uses signals about your broader preferences.
Search with your own descriptions, too
Try combining “dramedy” with a phrase for the group dynamic or setting you want. For example, search for “workplace dramedy” if colleagues and their shared problems are central to the appeal, or describe a close-knit group if the relationships matter more than the setting. These phrases narrow the search; they do not establish that every result will have the same tone or story structure.
Compare each shortlist by the features that matter to you
Once you have a few candidates, look beyond their genre labels. A short comparison helps separate a surface-level resemblance from a series that is likely to fit your particular taste.
Rank #4
- Tone balance: Does the show lean funny, carry substantial emotional stakes, or move between the two?
- Team role: Is cooperation central to the story, or is the group mostly background?
- Relationships and setting: Is the team made up of colleagues, friends, family, or another kind of ensemble? Does that setup appeal to you?
- Story structure: Does the series focus on largely separate episodes, or does it build a continuing story? Check this if you prefer one style.
- Availability: Can you watch it through a service you already use in your region?
Genre similarity is a starting point, not a promise of the same viewing experience. These checks help you decide whether a recommendation matches the specific mix you want.

Availability depends on the market and can change. JustWatch’s US TV guide offers filters including genre and streaming provider, as well as release year, price, and IMDb rating. Select the providers available to you, then confirm the current listing before you settle on a show. The guide is US-specific; viewers elsewhere should use a guide for their own market.
