Start with the game’s documented modding route, then assess the exact project and file before you download or run it. A familiar platform, popular author, or clean scan indicator can reduce uncertainty, but none guarantees a mod is safe. Use the checks below to spot warning signs, avoid unnecessary access requests, and make installations easier to undo.
Start with a route the game recognizes
Check the game developer’s documentation or official modding support to see whether it recommends a particular platform or installation method. If it points to a community platform, go to the project page there directly and use its download controls. Be cautious of unfamiliar mirrors, unsolicited download links, and unexpected off-site installers. A platform page makes it easier to inspect the file, its version, requirements, and available moderation signals. It is not a guarantee that the file or the account is safe.

Read the project page before downloading. Look for a concrete explanation of what the mod changes, the game and mod versions it supports, dependencies, known conflicts, and a changelog that describes recent updates. Then read recent comments or discussion for reports of unexpected behavior, broken updates, or a sudden change in how the project is distributed.

Check whether the author profile shows a consistent history of relevant work. Treat popularity, endorsements, account age, and time available as context—not proof. A detailed profile does not authenticate the person behind an account, and an established account can be compromised.
These checks align with platform rules, not a guarantee of quality. CurseForge requires clear functional information and changelogs for updates in its moderation policies. Nexus Mods’ File Submission Guidelines prohibit harmful submissions and require authors to verify claims on their pages.
Check the exact file and its download path
Do not rely on the project’s reputation alone: verify the particular release you intend to install. Compare its filename, version, and description with the project page. Be wary if the download redirects somewhere unfamiliar or if the file’s contents and permissions do not fit the mod’s stated purpose.

On Nexus Mods, open the project’s Files tab and check the security indicator for the specific file. Nexus Mods’ Virus Scanning at Nexus Mods article, last updated December 31, 2024, describes these statuses:
- White checkmark: The file may be very old and uploaded before stricter security checks were in place. Do not read this as proof that the file passed every newer check.
- Yellow question mark: Scanning is ongoing, and the file is not available to download.
- Red cross: The file failed checks or had a significant number of VirusTotal positives and requires moderator review. Nexus says this status alone does not establish that the file is malicious.
Do not bypass a quarantine or review status by downloading the same file from an unfamiliar mirror. Nexus Mods says uploaded content undergoes multiple security checks and a virus-scan process, but its help article also notes that older files may not have been checked under newer controls and that antivirus tools can produce false positives. Treat those statements as the platform’s description of its process, not an independent safety guarantee.
Pay attention to what a file asks you to do. Nexus Mods’ submission rules restrict external download links in specified circumstances and prohibit files that connect to the internet to download or send information unless that behavior is crucial to the mod or utility’s function. An unrelated launcher, password-protected archive, request to disable security protections, or prompt to enter credentials on a linked site is a reason to stop and verify through platform support or the author’s established channel. An unusual behavior is a warning to investigate, not proof by itself that a file is malicious.

Understand what platform moderation does—and does not—tell you
Moderation and scanning are useful signals, but their meaning depends on the platform and project. CurseForge explains that most new file clusters normally pass through manual moderation. A whitelisted project skips that manual step, while each file still undergoes automated technical checks for malicious code, integrity, and similar concerns. The status is project-specific and depends on its history, according to CurseForge’s project-whitelisting explanation, modified September 16, 2026. “Whitelisted” therefore does not mean every release was individually hand-reviewed or is risk-free.

The platform policies described here do not establish an overall rate of malicious mods, so a percentage would be misleading.
Stop when the installation behaves unexpectedly
Do not run a download if you cannot explain why it is asking for a particular action. Pause if an installer requests administrator access without a clear reason, asks you to turn off protection, launches an unexpected program, or appears to make unrelated network connections. Keep your operating system, browser, and antivirus software updated; Microsoft’s guidance on unwanted software recommends trusted sources and current antivirus protection.

On Windows, Smart App Control can block untrusted or unsigned applications, and User Account Control helps limit the ability of malware to run with administrator privileges. Microsoft explains the latter in How User Account Control works. Do not disable protections or approve an elevation prompt just to get an unexplained installer running.
If a security product flags a mod, do not assume either that it is definitely infected or that the alert is definitely a false positive. Recheck the source, exact file, platform status, and alert details. If you cannot resolve the concern, do not run it; use your security product’s scanning and reporting process and the platform’s report or support route. Nexus Mods asks users to report content that violates its rules in its submission guidelines.

Protect saves before a major change
Before installing a major mod or a mod pack, preserve your saves so you can recover if the installation is incompatible or breaks an existing setup. The sources cited here do not establish that you need a particular backup utility. The important point is to keep a recoverable copy before changing a setup you care about.

Compare options without treating any platform as universally safest
If more than one source offers a mod, compare the details that affect your decision rather than ranking platforms from a single signal:
- Does the game developer document or support the source?
- Does the project page host the file, or does it send you elsewhere?
- What scan and moderation status is shown, and does manual review apply to this release?
- Does the author clearly document function, dependencies, changes, and known issues?
- Is there a way to report a suspicious file and have it reviewed?
The policies discussed above are platform descriptions, not an independent head-to-head security audit. They do not justify declaring one platform safest for every game and file.
