An active listing shows what a seller hopes to get—not what a buyer paid. Use a range of relevant sales rather than treating one price guide figure or outlier as a guarantee.
Identify the exact card before comparing prices
Cards with the same Pokémon name can have very different values if they come from different sets, languages, printings or foil treatments. Read the card itself and record:

- Card name and printed card number
- Set or expansion and edition, if shown
- Language
- Rarity or special markings
- Version, such as holo, reverse holo or promo
A photo-based search can help find a candidate match, but confirm the details manually. eBay says its scanning tool may return alternatives when it cannot confidently identify a card, and warns that foil cards may not be recognized correctly. eBay Price Guide and eBay seller guidance both emphasize matching the card and its variant.
Match condition as carefully as identity
Ungraded cards
Inspect the front and back under good light. Look for corner whitening or rounding, edge wear, scratches or scuffing, dents, creases, stains, discoloration and other surface damage. A clean-looking front alone is not enough to establish condition.

When comparing raw cards, use marketplace condition descriptions consistently. eBay’s collectible-card categories include Near Mint or Better, Lightly Played, Moderately Played and Heavily Played. Compare a card only with raw copies showing similar wear; a more damaged or cleaner example is not an equivalent sale.
Professionally graded cards
For a card in a grading slab, note the grading company and numeric grade on the label. Compare it with sales of the same card graded by the same company at the same grade, when enough such sales exist. A raw card and a graded card—or two different grades—are not direct comparables.

Use completed sales, not asking prices
Search for transactions that have actually ended in a sale. On eBay, the Price Guide is accessible through My eBay/Collection or from an eligible listing. Refine the search with the card’s set, year, variant and grade. Review the median, sold-price range, recent transactions and sale format instead of choosing a single high or low result.
eBay says its Price Guide is built from completed eBay sales, matching the same card and, when available, its grade. Its displayed median includes accepted Best Offer prices rather than only the original asking price. That distinction matters: the displayed price on an active or originally listed item may not be the amount a buyer ultimately paid.

Exclude records that are not true matches, such as a different printing or language, a lot containing multiple cards, a damaged copy, or a slab with a different grade. If the card has few comparable sales, use a wider range and treat the estimate as less certain. eBay notes that rare cards with infrequent sales may not return results.
Interpret the estimate in context
The eBay Price Guide is a venue-specific benchmark, not a complete measure of global demand. Its current guidance says it supports English and Japanese Pokémon cards, relies primarily on eBay sales data, and incorporates some external context, including PSA and CGC population reports and the Card Ladder Index. The feature is currently available only in the United States. eBay says Price Guide data refreshes every 24 hours, while actual prices can vary with condition, timing, demand and other factors.

Do not confuse that Price Guide refresh with eBay’s separate market-value feature. In its seller guidance, eBay describes market value as a proprietary estimate based on eBay transaction history that updates every few minutes in that feature. The two update schedules refer to different tools.
Use comparable sales to make a buying or selling decision
If you are buying
Compare the offered card’s exact printing and condition with the completed-sale range. Consider shipping and other transaction terms as well as the card price. Comparable sales can show whether an asking price is plausible, but a guide does not guarantee what the card will sell for later.

If you are selling
Use matching sales to choose a starting asking price and decide whether an auction or fixed-price listing suits your goal. Describe defects plainly, and photograph the front, back, visible blemishes and grading label clearly. eBay’s seller guidance recommends clear card photos and titles that identify the Pokémon franchise, edition or set, card name, grade and special features.
Check authentication eligibility separately from value
Price evidence does not establish authenticity. eBay’s current Authenticity Guarantee policy covers eligible collectible card game single cards, subject to card, grader and geography requirements. The policy generally sets a $200 threshold for eligible Buy It Now prices or auction sales. For graded cards, it names Beckett, PSA, Certified Collectibles Group and SGC.
The stated geography is limited: the card must be sold on eBay.com by a seller in the continental United States or Canada to a buyer in the continental United States, with a limitation for US buyers purchasing graded cards from Canadian sellers. Eligibility is not universal across Pokémon cards, transactions or markets; check the current policy before relying on it.
