How to Find the Source of a Roof Leak and What to Do Next

To find a roof leak, start by containing water indoors, note when it appears, and inspect the affected room and any safely accessible attic. Look for roof damage from the ground; do not climb onto a roof to investigate, especially after severe weather. Water can travel along rafters, behind walls, or through insulation, so a ceiling stain may be far from the roof opening.

What to do first when your roof is leaking

  1. Protect people and belongings. Move furniture and electronics away from drips, place a container under the water, and keep people clear of wet areas where ceilings may be sagging or damaged.
  2. Record what is happening. Note where water appears and whether it coincides with rain, wind, snowmelt, or another weather condition. Photograph visible damage and keep receipts for temporary repairs if you may need records for an insurance claim; documentation does not guarantee coverage.
  3. Inspect indoors and, if safe, the attic. Check the ceiling and walls for discoloration, cracked paint, or peeling. If the attic is accessible without risk, use a bright flashlight to look for water marks on roof sheathing or rafters, damp insulation, and daylight.
  4. Check the exterior from the ground. Use a safe vantage point to look for missing or damaged shingles, loose seams, deteriorated flashing, storm debris, or granules collecting in gutters. Do not walk on the roof to investigate.

After severe weather, NRCA recommends ground-level inspection and professional assessment and repair. Its CEO, Reid Ribble, said in a September 7, 2021 safety release addressing people affected by severe weather: “For their safety, NRCA advises homeowners and business owners to immediately contact a local roofing professional to inspect and perform necessary repairs to a damaged roof system, and never climb up on a roof to do it themselves.” NRCA’s safety release advises against roof-top inspection by homeowners.

How to trace the leak without mistaking a stain for the entry point

Water does not necessarily drip straight down from the opening. It can run along rafters, behind walls, or through insulation before becoming visible inside. Treat a stain or drip as evidence of water movement, not a reliable map to the damaged roof area.

In the attic, follow visible moisture marks carefully toward their highest point, noting wet sheathing, rafters, or insulation. Flashing and penetrations, valleys, and chimneys are places to pay attention to, but visible damage there is a clue, not proof of the cause. NRCIA’s homeowner guide describes interior and attic signs, while its cause-determination guidance explains that water may travel away from the entry point.

Do not hose down the roof or use sharp tools to investigate; these can add damage or create new hazards. If you cannot connect the indoor evidence to a likely source, or the attic is unsafe or damage is extensive, have a qualified roofing professional diagnose it.

When temporary protection makes sense—and its safety limit

If there is an exposed opening, a tarp can provide temporary protection from rain until a permanent repair is made. NRCA disaster guidance recommends temporarily covering roof openings with tarpaulins to minimize additional rain damage. That is not an instruction to climb onto a roof: roof work can cause severe falls or damage the roof, and storm-damaged areas should be left to professionals.

If temporary protection cannot be put in place safely from the ground or another secure position, do not attempt it yourself. Avoid smearing mastic or puncturing a shingle blister: NRCA cautions that such actions can hide evidence a contractor may need. A temporary measure controls water; it does not establish the cause or repair the roof.

Why the permanent repair depends on the roof and the defect

A missing shingle, failed flashing, damaged roof deck, and drainage or ice-dam problem are different failures and do not share one repair recipe. NRCA’s repair procedures distinguish among shingles, underlayment, decking, fasteners, ridge details, and flashing, reflecting how much the fix depends on the roof system and failed component. NRCA’s roof-system repair material is technical guidance, not a universal homeowner repair manual.

A leak does not automatically mean the whole roof must be replaced: localized damage or loose flashing may be responsible, while broader roof-system failure can require more extensive work. Ask a qualified roofer to identify the roof system, determine the cause, and recommend the appropriate permanent repair—particularly if water entered the structure, the leak is hard to trace, or severe weather affected the roof.

What to do about wet attic insulation

Do not cover wet insulation with a new finish. Natural Resources Canada advises that the moisture source should be removed and insulation allowed to dry before it is covered. Water marks on sheathing and rafters are useful inspection clues, but they do not by themselves prove where water entered the roof. See Natural Resources Canada’s guidance on roofs and attics.
