How to Find the SMTP Port Number in Outlook

In classic Outlook for Windows, the outgoing (SMTP) port is stored in each account’s server settings. Open File > Account Settings, select the account, and choose Server Settings > Outgoing mail to see the SMTP server and port. The value you find there is only correct for that account, so check it against your email provider’s instructions before you rely on it. For Outlook.com and Microsoft 365 business setups, Microsoft’s published guidance uses port 587, but the SMTP host, encryption and authentication still depend on the account type.

Why there is no single Outlook SMTP port

Outlook does not have one built-in SMTP port. Each email account you add stores its own outgoing server name, port, encryption method and sign-in method. A Gmail-style consumer account, a Microsoft 365 work mailbox and an Exchange account managed by an organization can all point to different hosts. If you copy a port from a forum post or another computer, you can end up with a configuration that sends nothing or fails on authentication.

Keep four settings together whenever you look at outgoing mail. The SMTP hostname, the port, the encryption type (such as STARTTLS or TLS) and the authentication method all have to match. The incoming IMAP or POP port is a separate setting and should not be changed when you are working on outgoing mail.

Find the port in classic Outlook for Windows

These steps apply to classic Outlook for Windows. Microsoft’s cited instructions cover Outlook for Microsoft 365 and specified perpetual versions. Menu labels can differ between editions and account types, so if a name below does not match what you see, look for the closest equivalent under the account’s settings.

  1. Open Outlook and select File.
  2. Under Account Information, choose the account whose settings you want to inspect, then open Account Settings.
  3. Select the account in the list and choose Server Settings.
  4. Select Outgoing mail. The outgoing server name and port appear with the other outgoing settings.
  5. Compare the port and encryption with the values your provider publishes. Do not change them to match a different account.

Check the port through Control Panel

Some older configurations are managed through the classic Control Panel mail profile rather than the account screen inside Outlook. In that route, open the Internet Email Settings window for the account and select the Advanced tab. The outgoing value is listed under Server Port Numbers. Read it alongside the encryption setting, because a port number on its own does not say whether the connection is encrypted.

Changing the value here affects the account’s mail delivery immediately, so write down the original number before you edit it.

Exchange and organization-managed accounts

If your mailbox belongs to a company or school, the settings may be locked or set by an administrator. Microsoft’s guidance for Exchange mailboxes is to sign in to Outlook Web App and open Settings > Mail > POP and IMAP, or to ask the administrator directly. Guessing values in this situation can cause repeated password prompts or delivery failures that are hard to trace.

Common mistakes

  • Using one port number for every account instead of checking each account separately.
  • Confusing the outgoing SMTP port with the incoming IMAP or POP port.
  • Recording the port without the SMTP host, encryption method and authentication type that go with it.
  • Assuming basic password sign-in will work everywhere. Microsoft specifies Modern Auth / OAuth2 for Outlook.com in its cited settings.
  • Changing a work or school account’s outgoing server without first checking with the administrator.

When in doubt, compare Outlook’s stored values with your provider’s current documentation, change only what does not match, and test by sending a message to an account you control.
