The trail vanishes at the water, but reappears on the opposite bank and leads uphill to the Scoia’tael camp.
Find the transport attack site
- Take “Contract: Woodland Beast” from a notice board in northern Velen, near the border-post area, then speak with Captain Felix Grubb at the guardpost.
- Travel southwest from Grubb to the latest transport attack site, near the ford leading toward the Inn at the Crossroads. Defeat the alghouls at the scene before investigating it.
- Use Witcher Senses to examine the evidence and find the humanoid footprints. The tracks point to human attackers; the wounds on the bodies are described as having been inflicted after death.
Follow the tracks across the ford
Follow the footprints southeast, across the road and through the grass toward the water. They disappear at the ford. On the opposite bank, look southeast to pick them up again, then follow them up the grassy rise. The Scoia’tael archer who stops Geralt marks the approach to the hideout.

Choose how to approach the Scoia’tael camp
The “woodland beast” is a false lead: the trail brings Geralt to a Scoia’tael group, where the encounter can end in negotiation or combat. If you want to avoid starting a fight, be ready to surrender your weapons and speak with Vernossiel when you reach the camp.

If Geralt spares the group, the Scoia’tael share some stolen transport supplies. When you return to Captain Grubb, reporting the camp’s location earns a Letter of Safe Conduct; saying you found nothing earns no reward.

Attack the camp
If you kill the Scoia’tael, loot at least one squirrel tail and present it to Grubb. GameBanshee’s walkthrough says this earns 30 crowns and a Letter of Safe Conduct.

The route to the hideout is the same whichever approach you choose. The decision at the camp changes the confrontation and the available outcome: spare the group to avoid combat and receive supplies, or attack and follow the squirrel-tail reward path when reporting back.
