How to Find the Right Shoe Size When Buying Shoes Online

The most reliable way to choose an online shoe size is to measure both feet at home, in millimetres or the units requested by the product page, then compare the larger foot with the exact brand-and-model size chart. Check width, arch length, fit notes and the seller’s return rules before paying. A size that works in one brand or style is only a starting point for another because shoes with the same nominal size can have different internal shapes and volumes.

Use this decision process before you order

  1. Measure your left and right feet consistently, using the longest toe on each foot.
  2. Record the larger length and note whether one foot is wider or has a higher instep.
  3. Open the size chart attached to the exact shoe model. Use its stated region and units rather than a generic conversion chart.
  4. Read the model’s “How it fits” notes and check available widths.
  5. Confirm the seller’s current return deadline, condition requirements and shipping or restocking costs.

This process gives you a defensible starting size without pretending that a number alone guarantees comfort.

How to measure your feet at home

What you need

  • A sheet of paper larger than your foot
  • A wall or other straight vertical edge
  • A pencil or pen held vertically
  • A ruler or tape measure that can read millimetres (or the unit used by the shoe chart)
  • The socks or hosiery you expect to wear with the shoes

Step-by-step measurement

  1. Put the paper on a hard floor with one edge touching a wall.
  2. Stand with your heel lightly against the wall and your weight distributed normally. Keep the foot you are measuring flat rather than reaching your toes forward.
  3. Have someone mark the end of the longest toe. The longest toe may not be the big toe; Vans specifically instructs shoppers to measure to the longest toe and to record millimetres. Vans’ size guide
  4. Measure in a straight line from the wall edge to the toe mark. Do not measure around the foot.
  5. Repeat the process for the other foot. Timberland also tells customers to measure both feet before consulting its chart. Timberland’s size chart
  6. Write down both results, keeping the same unit and rounding convention used by the shoe maker’s chart.

Measure on the same surface, with the same socks and the same posture, so the two readings are comparable. FootJoy recommends measuring toward the end of the day and discusses sitting for its own fitting guidance; treat that as FootJoy’s method, not a universal rule for every brand or measuring setup. FootJoy’s measuring guide

Make the home reading more repeatable

Take two readings for each foot if the first mark is difficult to see. If the results differ, repeat the setup rather than averaging measurements taken in different positions. Keep the ruler aligned with the paper’s wall edge and read to the smallest unit the chart supports. A line angled toward the toe can make the foot appear longer, while a pencil held at a slant can move the mark. Someone else marking the toe is often easier because you can keep your heel and weight in place.

Use the footwear context as part of the setup. Thick hiking socks, athletic socks, tights and bare feet produce different space requirements. Measure with the sock or hosiery you actually expect to wear, and do not compare a barefoot reading with a chart recommendation intended for a boot worn over thick socks. If you are ordering several kinds of footwear, keep a record of the bare-foot measurement and explain the intended sock choice when asking the seller for help.

Why both feet matter

Feet commonly differ in length, width or volume. If you use only the shorter foot, the other may press against the toe box or sides. The Brannock instructions and Rockport’s fitting notes both advise fitting the larger foot. Brannock measuring instructions Rockport size and fit notes

Do not discard the smaller-foot measurement. It helps you explain an asymmetry to customer service and decide whether the model’s width options can accommodate both feet. If a shoe is comfortable on the smaller side but cramped on the larger side, the larger foot controls the decision. If the lengths match but widths differ, a wide option or a differently shaped model may be more useful than adding length.

Match the measurement to the exact product chart

Start with the chart on the product or brand page for the shoe you are considering. It may list US, UK, EU or another regional system, and it may use millimetres, centimetres or a length range. Use the chart’s own labels and do not assume that an EU or UK conversion is interchangeable across brands.

What to compare

Information What to do Why it matters
Your larger foot’s length Match it to the model’s stated foot-length range or measurement column. The larger foot is the one that must be accommodated.
Regional system and units Use the exact US, UK, EU or other system and the chart’s millimetre or centimetre units. Numbering and conversions vary by maker.
Width choices Look for narrow, standard, wide or other width codes. Length does not tell you whether the forefoot will be squeezed.
Model-specific fit note Read “How it fits,” boot-fit or last-shape guidance on the product page. Construction and volume can differ between styles from the same brand.
Return terms Record the deadline, wear restrictions and who pays shipping. A fit decision is reversible only if the order remains eligible for return.

Read the chart’s labels carefully

Some charts describe the length of the foot; others present a branded size alongside a measurement. Do not treat a number printed next to “insole,” “last” or “shoe length” as automatically equal to your foot length. Follow the definitions on that page. If the chart separates men’s, women’s, children’s or youth categories, select the category attached to the actual product rather than switching categories to obtain a familiar number.

Save or screenshot the chart and fit notes when you order. Product pages can be updated, and a record of the units, width code and model name makes an exchange conversation clearer. Confirm that the chart belongs to the colorway or collection you are buying when the retailer presents several related products on one page.

Why generic conversion charts are risky

A generic chart can suggest a starting region, but it cannot account for how a particular maker builds a particular shoe. Danner says its footwear uses US sizing based on the Brannock Device while warning that sizing can vary among styles. Vans likewise cautions that size can vary by brand or style. Danner’s boot-sizing guidance Vans’ size guide Use a conversion table only to find the relevant regional column; make the final choice from the exact model’s chart and fit notes.

For an international order, verify which country’s sizing system the seller means and whether the displayed chart is regional. A US number, UK number and EU number are labels, not interchangeable measurements. Enter the measured length into the maker’s own table first, then use any conversion only as a cross-check. If the chart and the checkout selector appear inconsistent, pause and ask the seller rather than guessing.

Length is only one part of fit

Heel-to-toe length

Your paper measurement describes a straight-line distance from the heel reference to the longest toe. It does not describe how much room a shoe has over the toes, how firmly the heel is held or where the shoe bends.

Arch or heel-to-ball length

The ball of your foot should correspond to the shoe’s flex point. FootJoy advises considering both heel-to-toe and arch length. The Brannock system measures heel-to-toe length and arch (heel-to-ball) length separately, then uses the result to help select a size. FootJoy’s measuring guide Brannock measuring instructions

If the shoe bends behind the ball of your foot, the length may look acceptable while the fit feels awkward. This is one reason a familiar size can fail in a new last. When a retailer provides arch-length or flex-point guidance, use it alongside your heel-to-toe result instead of trying to solve every problem by moving up a size.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Width and overall volume

Width affects the forefoot, while volume also includes the height over the instep and toe area. A longer size may create unwanted extra length without solving a width or instep problem. If one foot is wider than the other, look for alternate widths for the model instead of changing length automatically.

Brannock’s instructions explain how to measure width and compare heel-to-toe with arch length. Rockport describes Brannock and additional forefoot measurements as a starting point, noting that manufacturers do not all begin with the same measurements when developing a model size. Brannock measuring instructions Rockport size and fit notes

Width codes are not universal promises of identical room. Check how the individual retailer defines its width letters or words and whether the model is actually offered in each width. A standard width in one line may feel different from a standard width in another because the upper, lining and last differ.

Account for brand and style differences

Do not treat a size worn comfortably in one shoe as proof that the same number will work elsewhere. Last shape, materials, toe-box geometry, lining, cushioning and intended use all change the internal fit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use brand-specific fit notes as evidence, not universal rules

  • Crocs states that most of its shoes have a roomy fit. That description applies to Crocs’ own ranges, not to every casual shoe. Crocs’ size chart
  • Danner says sizing varies among styles, so a boot model should be checked individually rather than inferred from another Danner model. Danner’s boot-sizing guidance
  • Vans and Timberland provide their own charts and measuring directions; use the chart displayed for the product and region you are ordering. Vans’ size guide Timberland’s size chart

These notes help you interpret a chart, but they do not replace measuring your feet or checking a specific model.

Compare shoes on the same four axes

When two models look similar, compare the larger-foot measurement against each model’s chart, then compare width availability, shape or volume notes, and the return terms. A lower price is not necessarily the lower-risk option if that model has no alternate width or a restrictive return process. Conversely, a higher-priced shoe is not automatically a better fit; the useful evidence is model-specific guidance that matches your measurements.

Choose a size when your measurement falls between entries

First verify that you are reading the correct unit and regional column. Then compare the larger foot with the model’s stated range. If the chart gives no clear answer, use the seller’s fit notes or contact its support team with both measurements and your width question. Do not automatically add a full size: extra length can change heel security and the position of the flex point, while a wider option may solve a forefoot issue more directly.

If the two feet produce different size recommendations, prioritize the larger foot and investigate whether the model is offered in a different width. The correct adjustment depends on whether the difference is length, width or overall volume.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask support a specific question rather than sending only your usual size. Include the left and right lengths, any width difference, the socks or hosiery you measured with, the exact model, and the regional chart you used. Request confirmation of the recommended size and width in writing so you can refer to it if an exchange is needed.

Check the purchase conditions before checkout

Pre-order checklist

  • Exact model name and gender or youth category, if the seller separates charts.
  • Regional sizing system and measurement units.
  • Length range that contains the larger foot.
  • Available widths and any model-specific width guidance.
  • Material or construction notes that may affect volume, such as a structured boot upper or a roomy last.
  • Return or exchange deadline, eligibility, condition requirements and shipping fees.

Return-policy details are part of sizing

Policies vary by seller and can change. As examples of US guidance reviewed on current Vans and Timberland pages, eligible online purchases are described with a 30-day return period and condition requirements. Those examples are not a universal retailer standard; verify the policy attached to your own order and region. Vans size and returns information Timberland size and returns information

Check whether the deadline starts on purchase, shipment or delivery, and whether an exchange is handled differently from a refund. Confirm who pays return shipping, whether original shipping is refundable, and whether a restocking deduction applies. A marketplace seller can have different terms from the brand’s own store even when the product is identical.

Keep the shoes indoors while evaluating fit when the seller requires returns to be unworn. Preserve the box, inserts and tags, and photograph the condition if the retailer’s process requests it. Wearing a pair outdoors can make an otherwise correct size ineligible for return.

Evaluate the fit when the shoes arrive

Try them safely

  1. Try both shoes on the same day and with the socks you intend to use.
  2. Stand and walk on a clean indoor surface. Check that your longest toe is not pressed against the front and that the heel does not lift excessively.
  3. Pay attention to pressure at the widest part of the forefoot, the instep and the sides. Length alone cannot reveal those issues.
  4. Compare the left and right foot separately. A shoe that feels fine on the smaller foot may still be too short or narrow on the larger one.
  5. Decide within the seller’s return window and follow its condition rules.

Try lacing systems, straps or closures as you would use them, but do not stretch, crease or modify the shoes while deciding. Walk, stand and gently flex the shoes indoors. Check whether the ball of your foot sits near the shoe’s intended flex area and whether pressure appears only on one foot. Stop the evaluation if the seller’s conditions prohibit anything beyond a brief indoor try-on.

Common symptoms and the next step

What you feel Likely issue to investigate What to check
Toe touches the front or curls under pressure Insufficient length or a toe box shape that does not suit your longest toe. Recheck the measurement and the model’s chart; look for another size or shape.
Forefoot feels squeezed while length seems correct Width or volume mismatch. Check alternate widths and the model’s fit notes before increasing length.
Heel slips while the forefoot feels secure Heel shape or overall volume may not match your foot. Review the model’s construction and consider a different style rather than assuming a smaller size.
Ball of the foot sits ahead of the shoe’s flex point Arch-length mismatch. Compare arch-length guidance or seek a model with a better last.
One foot is comfortable and the other is pressured Asymmetry between feet. Fit the larger foot and use width choices or a different model where available.

Do not force a shoe to work because its printed size matches your usual number. If the fit is wrong, use the seller’s exchange or return process while the shoes remain eligible.

When a Brannock Device is useful

A Genuine Brannock Device can measure heel-to-toe length, arch length and width in a shoe store. The manufacturer’s instructions state: “When used properly, the Genuine Brannock Device® foot measurer is designed to indicate the correct shoe size.” The same instructions describe measurement as the first step and explain that manufacturing and style differences can require fitting adjustments. Read the Brannock instructions

Use the device’s readings as structured measurements to compare with an online model’s chart, not as a guarantee that every shoe will feel identical. Measure both feet, record the larger result and still check the product’s width, shape and return terms. If you buy a foot measuring device for home use, follow its instructions carefully and treat the result as a starting point, just as the maker recommends.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common online sizing mistakes to avoid

  • Measuring only one foot: the shorter foot can hide the size needed by the larger one.
  • Using the big toe automatically: the longest toe may be another toe, so mark the actual endpoint.
  • Mixing units: entering a centimetre reading into a millimetre column, or rounding differently from the chart, can point to the wrong entry.
  • Converting from memory: a size remembered from another brand is not a substitute for the current model’s chart.
  • Sizing up to solve every pressure point: more length can worsen heel slip and flex-point placement when the real issue is width or instep volume.
  • Ignoring the return deadline: a good measurement cannot help if the shoes can no longer be exchanged.
  • Testing outside: outdoor wear can violate an unworn-shoe requirement before you have decided to keep the pair.

A compact rule for your next online order

Measure both feet, match the larger one to the exact model chart, verify width and fit notes, and confirm the return policy before checkout. If the chart and your foot shape do not agree clearly, choose a different width or model—or ask the seller for model-specific guidance—rather than relying on a generic conversion or a familiar size number.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure my foot for online shoe shopping?

Place paper against a wall, stand with your heel at the wall, mark the longest toe, and measure straight from the wall to the mark. Repeat for both feet using the same socks, surface, posture and units requested by the exact shoe chart.

Should I size up if one foot is bigger?

Fit the larger foot, but do not automatically add a full size. First check whether the difference is length, width or volume and whether the model offers another width. Extra length can affect heel security and the shoe’s flex point.

Is my usual size reliable across brands?

It is only a starting estimate. Danner and Vans both warn that sizing can vary by style or brand. Use your measurements with the exact model’s regional chart and fit notes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a length measurement tell me whether a shoe will be comfortable?

No. Length does not describe width, instep height, toe-box volume, heel shape or arch length. Check width options and model-specific construction or fit guidance as well.

What should I do when my measurement falls between chart entries?

Confirm the unit and regional column first, then compare the larger foot with the model’s stated range. Read the fit notes or contact the seller with both measurements and your width question instead of automatically choosing a larger length.

Are US, UK and EU shoe sizes interchangeable?

No. They are different regional systems, and conversions can vary by maker. Use the exact brand or product chart for the region in which you are ordering.

How should I test online shoes when they arrive?

Try both shoes indoors on a clean surface with the intended socks. Check toe pressure, forefoot width, instep pressure, heel movement and flex-point placement, then act within the seller’s return window and condition requirements.

Is a Brannock Device a guarantee of the right online fit?

No. It measures heel-to-toe length, arch length and width and provides a useful starting point. The manufacturer’s instructions also note that manufacturing and style differences may require fitting adjustments.

The Bottom Line

Measure both feet consistently, fit the larger foot, and use the exact model’s chart rather than a remembered or generic size. Check width, arch and volume clues, read the model’s fit notes, and verify return conditions before ordering or wearing the shoes outdoors.
