The safest way to buy shoes as a gift is to get the recipient’s current foot measurements, then match them to the size chart for the exact brand and model. Measure both feet, use the larger result, record width when the chart offers it, and check the seller’s exchange rules before ordering. A size from another brand is only a starting clue because fit changes between brands, styles and shoe categories.
Why gift shoe sizing is unusually difficult
Shoe sizes are not a universal measurement system. A person who wears one size in a casual sneaker may need a different size in a running shoe, boot or dress shoe. Even within one brand, toe shape, upper materials, cushioning and the intended activity can change how the same printed size feels. Clarks’ fit guidance specifically notes that shoes in different styles can fit differently, while Nike’s buying guidance directs shoppers to measure first and then use Nike’s own size guide.

That makes a generic US-to-UK-to-EU conversion chart a weak basis for a surprise gift. The useful question is not simply “What size do they wear?” It is “What length and width does their larger foot need in this particular shoe?” Your purchase decision should also account for the socks the recipient will wear, their preferred amount of room and the seller’s policy for exchanges.

- Measured feet: A recent measurement taken in socks similar to those intended for the shoes is the strongest starting point.
- The exact product’s chart: Enter the measurement in the chart supplied for the selected brand and, where available, the individual model or shoe category.
- Width information: Use the chart’s width option rather than assuming every shoe in a numbered size has the same fit.
- Known fit information: A label from a pair the recipient currently likes can help, but it is a clue rather than proof that another brand or style will fit.
- Exchange flexibility: If uncertainty remains, preserve a way for the recipient to change the size after opening the gift.
This order prevents a common mistake: treating a familiar number as more reliable than a measurement and a model-specific chart.

How to measure the recipient’s feet at home
Gather simple household materials
You do not need a specialist device. Clarks’ home instructions identify paper, a ruler or tape measure, and a pen or pencil as sufficient. Add socks that resemble the ones the recipient will wear with the shoes. A dedicated foot-measuring ruler is optional convenience, not a requirement.
- Two sheets of paper larger than the feet
- A ruler or flexible tape measure
- A pen or pencil held vertically
- Socks of the intended thickness
- A hard, flat floor and a way to record the measurements
Choose a realistic measuring time
Feet can be slightly larger after a day of standing or walking. ASICS Germany’s sizing guidance recommends measuring both feet and includes an end-of-day approach. Measuring later in the day, while wearing the intended socks, helps avoid choosing a size based on an unusually compressed morning measurement.
Trace and measure each foot
- Place the paper on a hard, flat floor; do not measure on carpet, which can let the foot sink and shift.
- Put on the socks the recipient is likely to wear with the shoes.
- Stand naturally with weight distributed on the foot. Keep the pen or pencil upright as you trace around it, rather than angling inward.
- Repeat the process for the other foot. Do not assume the two outlines are identical.
- Measure the longest distance from the back of the heel to the tip of the longest toe on each outline.
- Measure the widest part of each outline if the selected brand provides width guidance.
- Write down both sets of results and use the larger foot’s length. If the widths differ, note the wider foot as well.
Standing matters because the foot spreads under body weight. If you are measuring someone else discreetly, ask them to stand normally rather than measuring a relaxed, dangling foot. Keep the paper and notes private if the measurement is meant to remain a surprise.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Record the result in a useful format
Record the measurements in the unit used by the target brand’s chart, retaining the original millimetre or centimetre values. For example, note “left: length and width; right: length and width; larger foot: right.” Do not round aggressively before consulting the chart. A small difference can move a measurement to another recommended size, and the chart’s stated increments should determine how you round.
Match the measurement to the exact shoe chart
Find the chart for the brand and model
Open the selected brand’s current size guide and look for the category that matches the purchase: running, lifestyle, formal, children’s or another listed type. Nike’s UK buying guide describes the sequence as measuring the foot and then using Nike’s size guides. Clarks likewise provides chart and width guidance. Use those instructions instead of relying on a chart copied from a different retailer.
When a product page has a model-specific fit note, read it before selecting the size. A chart may provide a general conversion while the model page explains whether the shoe is narrow, roomy or intended to be worn with particular socks. If the chart lists foot length rather than the shoe’s internal length, enter the measured foot value exactly as requested.
Do not treat US, UK and EU numbers as interchangeable
International size labels are useful only within the chart that defines them. The same printed number can correspond to different lengths across brands, and a conversion may not account for width or style. If a recipient’s old shoes show a size in another system, use that information to narrow the search, then verify it against the new brand’s own chart and the measured larger foot.
Use the larger foot when the chart gives a boundary
If one foot measures between two chart entries, select based on the larger foot and then consider the shoe’s fit guidance. A shoe that is slightly roomy can often be adjusted with lacing or an insole; a shoe that is too short cannot be made longer. Do not deliberately size down to match the smaller foot.

Width is part of the size decision
Length alone does not describe fit. Clarks’ guidance includes width considerations and width options, where available. A recipient with a broad forefoot may need a wider version at the same length, while a narrow foot may move inside a standard-width shoe. Look for width labels or chart columns such as narrow, standard, wide or extra wide, and follow the brand’s definitions rather than assuming that “wide” means the same thing everywhere.
Check where the foot is broadest. If the longest-foot measurement points to one size but the width points to a wider option, prefer the chart’s width recommendation. Do not compensate for a width problem by automatically adding length: extra toe length can cause heel movement and may still leave the forefoot cramped.
When you cannot measure without ruining the surprise
Ask directly when fit matters more than secrecy
The most dependable solution is often a candid question: ask for the recipient’s current foot length, width or preferred size in the exact brand you plan to buy. You can frame it as choosing between colors or models, or shop together and let the recipient select the pair. If the gift must remain a surprise, ask a household member or close friend who has recently helped with the recipient’s shoes.
Inspect a shoe they actually wear
Look for the size and width printed inside a pair that fits well, preferably a similar shoe category. Photographing the label can prevent a memory error. Treat the information as a clue, not a direct instruction: an everyday sneaker from one brand does not establish the correct size for another brand’s running shoe or a different-shaped boot.
Use an indirect measurement only with care
You might trace an insole or outline a shoe, but an insole can be removable, worn down or shaped differently from the foot. A shoe’s outside dimensions also include materials and construction that do not translate directly into foot length. If an indirect method is your only option, combine it with the wearer’s known brand, model and width preference, and choose a seller with a practical exchange route.
Let the recipient choose the size
A retailer gift card or a recipient-selected purchase protects fit when no trustworthy measurement is available. It is less of a surprise, but it avoids forcing the recipient to keep an uncomfortable pair. Confirm that the specific seller offers the relevant gift-card and exchange terms before relying on this option.
Adjust for the shoe’s purpose and fit preferences
Running shoes require model-specific caution
ASICS Germany’s current sizing guidance generally recommends going half a size above a casual-shoe size for running shoes. That is conditional ASICS guidance for running footwear, not a universal rule for every brand, model or activity. Use it only alongside the ASICS chart, the measured larger foot and the particular model’s instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRunning socks, swelling during activity and a preference for extra toe room can all affect the final choice. Do not apply the ASICS recommendation to a dress shoe, casual shoe or another manufacturer without that brand’s own evidence.

Account for socks and intended use
Thick winter socks can change the required volume even when foot length is unchanged. Measure in comparable socks and identify whether the gift is for daily wear, formal use, hiking or exercise. A recipient who prefers a close, performance fit may choose differently from someone who wants more room in a casual shoe. Record that preference before ordering so the chart result is interpreted in context.
Consider construction and materials
A flexible knit upper may accommodate more variation than a rigid leather toe box, but do not assume a material will stretch enough to correct a short shoe. A structured shoe should be selected from the chart and width options first; comfort should not depend on breaking in a size that is already too small.
Compare candidate shoes before you order
If several shoes could make suitable gifts, compare them on the factors that determine whether the measured size will translate into a usable fit.
| Decision factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Brand and model chart | Current chart for the exact shoe and category | Numbered sizes and fit notes vary by brand and style. |
| Length | Larger-foot measurement in the chart’s requested unit | The longer foot determines minimum usable length. |
| Width | Available width columns or width versions | Correct length can still feel tight if the forefoot is wider. |
| Purpose | Running, casual, formal, walking or another use | Activity and model guidance can change the recommended fit. |
| Socks | Thickness worn with the shoes | Volume and comfort depend on what goes inside the shoe. |
| Fit preference | Close fit versus extra toe room | The chart gives a starting size, not the recipient’s personal preference. |
| Seller policy | Exchange window, exclusions, costs and geography | A flexible policy provides recovery if the first size is wrong. |
Protect the purchase with an exchange plan
Read the actual policy before paying
Return and exchange terms depend on the seller, country, item and purchase date. Check whether the shoes must be unworn, whether the original packaging is required, who pays return shipping, and whether sale or personalized items are excluded. Do not assume that a gift receipt, free exchange or a particular time window is universal.
ASICS Germany’s page reviewed for this guide advertised a 90-day return period. That is a localized example, not a promise for ASICS purchases elsewhere or a permanent policy. Verify the current terms for your country and the exact seller at checkout.
Keep the gift exchangeable
- Save the order confirmation and policy details until the recipient has tried the shoes indoors.
- Do not remove tags or discard the box before the fit is accepted.
- Include a gift receipt when the seller offers one, but confirm what information it contains.
- Tell the recipient how the exchange works without presenting the gift as a chore.
Trying shoes on a clean indoor surface protects the option to return them. Outdoor wear can mark soles and make an otherwise eligible exchange impossible.

Measuring only one foot
Mistake: You measure the foot that is easier to trace.
Fix: Measure both and select for the larger foot, as advised in Clarks and ASICS guidance.
Measuring without socks
Mistake: Bare-foot measurements are used for shoes that will be worn with thick socks.
Fix: Measure in socks comparable to the intended use.
Using a soft surface
Mistake: The outline is made on a bed, rug or carpet.
Fix: Stand on paper placed on a hard, flat floor.
Angling the pencil inward
Mistake: The outline is drawn under the foot, shortening the apparent width or length.
Fix: Hold the pencil vertically while the recipient stands naturally.

A practical decision path
- Can you obtain a recent measurement? If yes, measure both feet in suitable socks and record length and width. If no, continue to the next step.
- Can you ask the recipient or a trusted person? If yes, obtain the preferred brand, model and width information. If no, inspect a well-fitting shoe label while recognizing its limits.
- Do you know the exact shoe category? Select the brand’s chart for that category. For running shoes, read the individual model guidance and any conditional half-size recommendation.
- Does the chart support the measured length and width? Choose using the larger foot and the stated width. If the chart is unclear, contact the seller before paying rather than guessing.
- Is the fit still uncertain? Choose a recipient-selected purchase or a seller with terms that allow a size exchange in your location.
What to do after the gift is opened
Have the recipient try both shoes with the intended socks while standing and walking indoors. Check that the longest toe is not pressed against the front, the heel does not lift excessively, and the widest part of the foot is not squeezed. Comfort should be assessed in the shoe’s normal use position, not only while seated. If the fit is wrong, follow the seller’s exchange instructions before wearing the shoes outside.
The goal is not to guess a perfect number from a label. It is to combine a larger-foot measurement, the exact brand and model chart, width and use considerations, and a realistic exchange plan. That method gives a surprise gift the best chance of being comfortable and usable.
