There is no Pilotwings-style flying mode in Nintendo Switch Sports. Nintendo’s documented lineup contains seven sports—Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara—and no aircraft, flight or free-roaming aviation activity. Consequently, there is no menu path, unlock condition or controller combination that launches flying in that game.
The confusion probably comes from two similarly named products: a reported “Prop Plane mode” in the separate Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, and the standalone flight game Pilot Sports. They are not modes or downloadable content for Nintendo Switch Sports.

Nintendo Switch Sports has no flying mode to find
Nintendo’s official activity overview, published November 28, 2022, describes Nintendo Switch Sports as a collection of seven sports:

| Activity listed by Nintendo | What that means for this question |
|---|---|
| Golf | Included sport; not an aviation activity |
| Soccer | Included sport; not an aviation activity |
| Volleyball | Included sport; not an aviation activity |
| Bowling | Included sport; not an aviation activity |
| Tennis | Included sport; not an aviation activity |
| Badminton | Included sport; not an aviation activity |
| Chambara | Included sport; not an aviation activity |
That is the complete documented activity lineup. It does not list airplanes, gliders, parachutes, jetpacks, island touring or a Pilotwings-style free-flight mode. Since the title has no documented flying activity, it also has no hidden menu sequence for opening one.

What you will not find in the menus
- No “Flight,” “Flying,” “Pilot,” “Aircraft” or “Prop Plane” tile in Nintendo Switch Sports.
- No flight activity unlocked by completing the seven sports.
- No downloadable content that adds a flight mode to the game.
- No Joy-Con, Pro Controller or Leg Strap setting that turns one of the sports into a flight simulator.
If a guide tells you to select a flying option inside Nintendo Switch Sports, it is describing a different title or relying on an unverified claim.
Why Nintendo Switch Sports Resort causes the confusion
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is a separate title. Its name is close enough to Nintendo Switch Sports that screenshots, videos and search results can easily be mixed together. A TechRadar preview dated October 7, 2026 describes a Pilotwings-like “Prop Plane mode” in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort. That report is about Resort, not the original Nintendo Switch Sports.
What is known about Resort’s Prop Plane mode
The available preview establishes the existence of a reported Prop Plane activity, but it does not provide a verified menu route, button sequence or unlock requirement. It would be misleading to turn that description into step-by-step instructions. At present, the safe conclusion is simply that the reported mode belongs to Nintendo Switch Sports Resort and that its exact access procedure has not been established here.
How to check which game you have
- Read the exact title printed on the game card or shown on the software tile.
- Confirm whether the title says Nintendo Switch Sports or Nintendo Switch Sports Resort; they are not interchangeable.
- Do not use a Resort video as evidence that the same option exists in Nintendo Switch Sports.
If your copy is the original Nintendo Switch Sports, looking through every sport, changing controllers or reinstalling the game will not reveal a flying mode that the documented lineup does not contain.
What you can actually play in Nintendo Switch Sports
The seven documented sports are the activities Nintendo Switch Sports is built around. Their controls are designed for motion play with compatible Joy-Con hardware rather than aircraft controls.
Supported controller arrangements
Nintendo Support lists these configurations, depending on the sport:
Rank #2
- Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports
- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
- Paired Joy-Con 2 controllers.
- Paired Joy-Con controllers.
- A single Joy-Con 2 controller.
- A single Joy-Con controller.
- Joy-Con controllers used with the Leg Strap for supported Soccer play.
The Leg Strap is identified by Nintendo as a Soccer accessory. Nothing in Nintendo’s support information connects it to flying, and it cannot add an aircraft activity.
Hardware that is not supported
Nintendo Switch Sports does not support Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controllers or Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers. Buying or pairing one of those controllers will not expose an extra mode; the limitation is compatibility, not a locked flight feature.
Handheld and TV play
The game does not support Handheld Mode. Nintendo recommends TV Mode for the best experience, because the supported activities depend on Joy-Con-based motion controls. This requirement affects how the seven sports are played; it does not imply that a flight activity is available when the console is docked.
Does Nintendo Switch Online unlock flying?
No. Nintendo Switch Online is an online-play requirement, not a content unlock.
Nintendo Support says an active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to play Nintendo Switch Sports online. Without a membership, choosing Play Globally provides a trial competition against computer opponents. Neither option adds a flight sport, a plane, an island tour or access to Nintendo Switch Sports Resort.
Recommended Free Tools
The separate flight game you may be looking for: Pilot Sports
If your goal is to fly rather than play one of the seven sports, Nintendo lists Pilot Sports as a separate Nintendo Switch game. Its product description covers courses featuring several types of flight:
Rank #3
- The ultimate game that brings together 30 different sports
- Challenge your family or friends and may the best player win
- Multiple game modes available: Quick match or Tournament / Team mode or Solo
- Explore a multitude of environments! Volcano / Desert / Snowy countries
- Unlock new costumes and choose to play with motion or buttons on NSW
- Airplanes
- Jetpacks
- Hang-gliders
- Parachutes
Nintendo’s listing includes a Nintendo Switch Game Card edition and also identifies digital availability. Pilot Sports is a standalone game, not an expansion, mode or downloadable package for Nintendo Switch Sports.
What Pilot Sports does and does not establish
The product description establishes course-based flight gameplay and multiple aircraft or flight styles. It does not establish that Pilot Sports reproduces the reported island experience associated with Nintendo Switch Sports Resort. Treat the games as separate products with different designs and objectives.
Choosing the right title for your goal
| If you want… | Best match among these titles | What the available information supports |
|---|---|---|
| The seven motion-controlled sports you already own | Nintendo Switch Sports | Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara; no flying mode. |
| A reported Pilotwings-like prop-plane activity | Nintendo Switch Sports Resort | A TechRadar preview dated October 7, 2026 reports a “Prop Plane mode,” but does not verify how to start it. |
| Courses using planes, jetpacks, hang-gliders and parachutes | Pilot Sports | Nintendo’s product listing describes these flight types and lists Game Card and digital formats. |
| A physical copy | Pilot Sports, if available in your region | Nintendo lists a Game Card edition; regional stock and pricing are not established here. |
| Online play in Nintendo Switch Sports | Nintendo Switch Sports with Nintendo Switch Online | An active membership is required for online play; it does not unlock flight. |
A practical decision guide
You already own Nintendo Switch Sports
Keep using it for its seven listed sports. If the reason you bought it was to fly, the game will not meet that requirement, because no aviation activity is part of its documented content. A different controller, TV setting or online subscription will not change that.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou saw a video showing a propeller plane
Check the title shown in the video and in your own software library. If the video identifies Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, do not expect the same menu in Nintendo Switch Sports. Because the available preview does not verify Resort’s navigation steps, avoid guides that present a precise sequence as confirmed fact.
You want structured flight challenges
Pilot Sports is the clearly documented alternative. Nintendo describes courses rather than a sports-club lineup and names several ways to fly, including airplanes, jetpacks, hang-gliders and parachutes. Choose it when course-and-challenge flight gameplay matters more than playing the original Nintendo Switch Sports activities.
You want a casual island-style experience
The reported Prop Plane description is associated with Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, not Pilot Sports. However, the current information available here does not establish Resort’s release details, regional availability or exact access steps. Confirm those details from an official product page or an updated in-game guide before buying specifically for that mode.
Rank #4
- 6 sports: Baseball, run's jump, goalkeeper, tennis, bowling & rafting.
- 20 characters to customize (change your name, outfit, accessories & hair)
- Varied game modes - Solo or multiplayer for up to 8 players.
- More than 15 environments and tons of unlockable items.
Common search mistakes and their fixes
Searching for a hidden unlock
There is no documented unlock for flying in Nintendo Switch Sports. Completing matches, raising a character’s level or winning online competitions cannot add an activity that Nintendo’s lineup does not list.
Using the wrong controller as a workaround
Pro Controllers are not supported, while Joy-Con arrangements vary by sport. Controller compatibility determines whether you can play the existing activities; it does not determine whether a flight menu appears.
Confusing a feature preview with an instruction manual
A preview can identify a feature without documenting its final menu placement. The October 7, 2026 TechRadar report is enough to distinguish Resort’s reported Prop Plane mode from Nintendo Switch Sports, but not enough to supply a verified launch sequence.
Assuming online membership adds content
Nintendo Switch Online enables online play. The offline trial against computer opponents available through Play Globally is a fallback for online competition, not a flight mode or Resort access pass.
Bottom line for Nintendo Switch Sports owners
Stop looking for a Pilotwings-style flying mode inside Nintendo Switch Sports: the game’s documented content is seven sports, and none is flight. If you meant the similarly named Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, a recent preview reports a Prop Plane mode but does not verify how to reach it. If you want a documented Switch flight game now, Pilot Sports is a separate option with courses for airplanes, jetpacks, hang-gliders and parachutes. Match the title to the experience you want before troubleshooting menus or buying accessories.
