The resulting Edit Order screen contains the customer-facing order number in the Order details panel. If a developer or support agent needs WooCommerce’s internal identifier, use the order URL’s {ORDER_ID} value or the REST API’s id field; that value can differ from the displayed order number.

What you need before looking up an order
The documented admin workflow requires a WordPress account with the Administrator or Shop Manager role. Those roles can access WooCommerce orders and the order-editing interface. A customer account, subscriber account, or other front-end login will not provide the same order-management screen.

You also need enough information to identify the order. The order number is the fastest search term, but the Orders table can also be searched using the customer name and other information shown in the table. If you are investigating a failed checkout or payment, collect the order number, current status, approximate attempt time, and the exact checkout message before changing anything.
Open the WooCommerce Order Details page
1. Sign in to WordPress Admin
Sign in to the store’s WordPress dashboard with an Administrator or Shop Manager account. WooCommerce’s order-management screens are inside the administrative dashboard, not in the customer-facing account area.

2. Go to WooCommerce > Orders
In the left-hand WordPress Admin menu, select WooCommerce, then Orders. The Orders screen displays orders in a table. In the default Order column, WooCommerce shows the visible order number and the customer name, making either value a useful entry point.
3. Search or narrow the list
If the order is not immediately visible, use the search box in the upper-right corner. Enter the order number, customer name, or another value that appears in the table, then select Search orders or press Enter. Use the available date and status filters when the order is old, the store has many orders, or you know whether it is processing, completed, cancelled, failed, refunded, or in another state.

For example, choose the relevant month and status, then search for the customer name. A date or status filter can hide an otherwise valid order, so clear filters if a search that should match returns no result.
4. Open the single-order screen
Select the order number or the customer name in the matching row. WooCommerce opens the single-order page, commonly called the Edit Order screen. Do not select a browser bookmark for a different order without checking the number shown on the page; each order has its own record and URL.
Read the Order details panel
Near the top of the Edit Order screen, the Order details panel identifies the record you opened. It includes the visible order number, payment information, the order date and time, current status, customer username and email address, billing details, and shipping details. The panel is the correct place to confirm that the search result belongs to the customer and transaction you intend to discuss.

The visible number at the top is usually what people mean when they ask for “the order number.” It is also the value most store staff should quote to a customer or support representative unless the request specifically says internal order ID, database ID, or API id.
Order ID versus order number: the distinction that matters
The order number is customer-facing
WooCommerce prominently exposes the order number in the Orders table and the Order details panel. It is designed to be read and communicated by people. A store may use a sequential number, a prefixed number, or another custom numbering format, depending on its configuration and extensions.
The order ID is an internal identifier
WooCommerce’s developer conventions treat the internal order ID and the displayed order number as separate values. The REST API documents an id property and a number property rather than one combined field. The internal identifier is the value used by WooCommerce’s order URLs and integration logic; the customer-facing number is the value shown for human reference.
Because those fields are distinct, never assume that an order numbered 1057 has an internal ID of 1057. That may happen in a simple store, but custom numbering, imported orders, deleted records, or other data history can produce different values.
Which value should you provide?

Find the internal order ID in the WooCommerce URL
WooCommerce documents URL patterns that contain an {ORDER_ID} placeholder, including customer-facing routes such as /view-order/{ORDER_ID} and payment routes such as /order-pay/{ORDER_ID}. When you open the relevant order or payment page, inspect the address bar and identify the value occupying that placeholder.

- Open the correct order from WooCommerce > Orders.
- Verify the customer, date, status, and visible order number in the Order details panel.
- Look at the browser address bar for the order route.
- Record the integer or other value used where the URL pattern places
{ORDER_ID}. - Keep that internal value alongside the visible order number; do not replace one with the other in a support record or integration.
An integer in the URL that does not match the customer-facing order number is not automatically an error. WooCommerce’s URL and API documentation explicitly allow the internal ID and displayed number to be different.
Get the ID from the WooCommerce REST API
For an integration, script, or developer handoff, use the order object returned by WooCommerce’s REST API. Read the id field for the internal identifier and the number field for the customer-facing order number. Store both fields with their names intact.
Do not parse a formatted order number and treat the result as an ID. A prefix, non-sequential numbering scheme, or custom extension can make that approach unreliable. The API response is the authoritative source for software that needs to retrieve, update, or associate an order record.

If a developer asks for “the order ID,” send the id value and label it explicitly. Include the number as a second, clearly labelled value so the developer can reconcile the technical record with what staff and customers see.

Troubleshoot an order you cannot find
Check date and status filters
The most common administrative cause is an active filter. Review the selected month or date range and status, then clear filters and search again. An order can be absent from a filtered list even though it exists.

Search using another table value
If searching the number fails, try the customer name or another value displayed in the Orders table. Check spelling and punctuation, and search a shorter portion of the name if the full value includes accents or additional text.
Confirm the account role
Verify that the signed-in account is an Administrator or Shop Manager. Without one of the documented roles, the Orders menu or individual order records may not be available. Ask a store administrator to perform the lookup rather than attempting to infer an ID from a customer-facing receipt.
Verify the selected record
When several orders share a customer, confirm the visible order number, order date and time, current status, email address, and billing or shipping details. Opening the wrong order can produce a technically valid ID attached to the wrong transaction.

Separate a missing order from a failed checkout
A customer may report a checkout attempt without a completed order. In that case, record the attempted time, the checkout message, and any order number shown to the customer. Search by date and customer, then inspect failed or pending statuses. If no order exists, an internal order ID may not have been created for that attempt.

For customer support
Quote the visible order number first. It is the value a customer can recognize from a confirmation message or receipt. Add the current status and order time when troubleshooting a payment or fulfillment question. Only expose the internal ID when a technical support process specifically requests it.
For payment investigations
WooCommerce recommends recording the order number, current status, attempt time, and checkout message when investigating payment or checkout problems. These details provide context that an ID alone cannot supply. Keep the internal ID as an additional technical reference if the payment gateway or developer needs it.
For developer tickets
Use a labelled pair such as “internal ID: …; order number: …” rather than sending an unqualified number. Include the order URL when appropriate, but remove sensitive customer information from public or external tickets. This naming prevents a developer from mistaking the human-readable number for the API identifier.
For automation
Persist the API id as the machine key and preserve the API number as a display attribute. If your system shows only one field, rename it so users know whether they are seeing an internal ID or a customer-facing order number. Never derive one field from the other after the record has been created.
A verification checklist
- You signed in with an Administrator or Shop Manager account.
- You opened WooCommerce > Orders rather than the customer account area.
- You searched the Orders table and reviewed date or status filters.
- You opened the record by selecting its order number or customer name.
- You confirmed the customer, date and time, status, and contact details in Order details.
- You identified whether the request concerns the displayed order number or the internal order ID.
- For a technical request, you read the URL’s
{ORDER_ID}value or the APIidfield. - You kept the internal ID and visible order number as separate, labelled values.
Quick decision guide
Use the Orders table or Order details panel when a person needs to identify an order. Use the URL when you need to inspect the internal value attached to a specific order page. Use the API response when software must reliably read or update the record. The path depends on the purpose, but the principle is constant: the visible order number and internal order ID are related identifiers, not guaranteed synonyms.
