Compare the same room, occupancy, cancellation terms, payment timing, currency and inclusions on the hotel’s website and at least one reputable online travel agency (OTA). Then check the final booking page for taxes, resort or destination fees, service charges and any amount payable at the property.
A practical workflow is: search a metasearch service such as Google Hotels, verify the offer directly with the hotel and an OTA, switch to a total-stay view, continue to checkout, and save the final price and conditions. Rates differ because sites may display different fees, products, private discounts, inventory and contract terms.

Why the same hotel can have different prices
A hotel room is not a single product. Each channel can sell a different combination of room, cancellation promise, payment schedule, guest benefits and fees. Two listings can show the same property name while creating different obligations for you.

Fees may appear at different stages
One site may show only the base room rate; another may include taxes and mandatory resort or destination fees in the first result. A third may show some charges during checkout or identify them as payable at the property. Separating a mandatory resort fee from the room rate before showing the total can increase the effort and cognitive cost of comparing offers, according to the Federal Trade Commission’s Economic Analysis of Hotel Resort Fees.

For a fair comparison, add every mandatory charge to the stay total. Include hotel or resort fees, city or tourism taxes, service fees, pay-at-property charges and required facility or transport fees. Do not assume a charge is absent merely because it is missing from a nightly headline.
The offers can have different contract terms
A refundable room, a nonrefundable room, a pay-now rate and a pay-at-property rate are different products. A lower price may compensate you for giving up cancellation rights or agreeing to an earlier payment. Compare the cancellation deadline in the property’s local time, not just a label such as “free cancellation.”
Private discounts are not always visible publicly
Hotels can distribute lower prices through loyalty accounts, mobile or email offers, corporate arrangements, phone bookings and other closed-user or offline channels. UK government guidance recognizes that hotels may offer lower prices through private channels even where public OTA pricing is constrained. A public search therefore cannot prove that no cheaper legitimate rate exists.
Room details and inventory vary
“Same hotel” does not guarantee the same bed, view, floor, occupancy limit, breakfast, accessibility features or cancellation deadline. Inventory is live: a room can sell or a rate can change between the comparison result and checkout. The amount and terms on the final booking page control what you can actually buy.
Currency and geography change the total
Taxes, city charges and fee conventions differ by country and sometimes by municipality. A site can display a converted estimate while the hotel charges your card in another currency. Check the booking currency, who performs the conversion, whether your card issuer adds a foreign-transaction fee, and which charges are collected at the property.
What to record before comparing prices
Start with a precise search. Write down the details that define the offer so you do not compare unlike products.

Step-by-step method for finding the lowest like-for-like total
1. Search the exact property and dates in a metasearch service
Use a metasearch tool such as Google Hotels to discover the available channels. Enter the exact property, dates, room count and guest count. Open the offer details rather than relying on the first nightly number.

For each candidate, record the room type, bed, occupancy, cancellation deadline, payment timing and currency. If the result does not state one of these, treat the offer as unverified and open the provider’s page before comparing it.
2. Open the hotel’s official website
Navigate to the hotel’s own booking flow and repeat the same search. Match the dates, guests, room category and rate conditions. Look for member, loyalty, mobile, email or other private rates. A member price may require a free account or sign-in; note that requirement before deciding whether it is available to you.
Do not treat “book direct” as automatically cheaper. Direct booking can provide a lower private rate or different benefits, but only the completed stay total and terms establish which offer costs less for your trip.
3. Open at least one reputable OTA
Use an OTA shown for the same property and dates. Select the identical room category and cancellation policy where possible. Check whether the OTA is selling the room itself, collecting payment, or passing payment to the hotel; the responsible party affects support and refund handling.
If the OTA has several versions of the property listing, confirm the address and room descriptions. A similarly named annex, apartment or nearby property is not the same inventory.

4. Turn on a total-price or stay-total view
Choose the setting that displays the total for the entire stay, including taxes and mandatory fees. Google’s Hotel Center policy says mandatory charges collected by the partner or hotel must be represented, and its accuracy policy requires the partner booking-page total to match the amount shown in Google. A total-price view is a useful starting point, not a substitute for checking checkout.
Read the fee breakdown. Separate mandatory charges from optional extras such as breakfast added at your choice, room upgrades or insurance. Keep mandatory charges in your comparison even if they are collected later at the property.
5. Proceed to the final booking page on every channel
Continue far enough to see the amount immediately before payment, without submitting the reservation. The Federal Trade Commission’s rule requires short-term-lodging sellers to disclose the final amount, including mandatory fees, before asking people to pay. The FTC states: “A business must calculate, then clearly, conspicuously, and prominently disclose the final amount of payment, including taxes, shipping, and optional add-ons, before asking people to pay.”

At this stage, verify:
- the total for all nights, not merely a per-night figure;
- taxes and mandatory resort, destination, facility or service fees;
- any amount charged now and any balance charged later;
- the currency and whether a conversion rate is being applied;
- the cancellation deadline, refund amount and change restrictions;
- the room, bed, occupancy and inclusions you selected; and
- which company will issue the confirmation and handle support.
6. Normalize the offers before choosing
Put the offers side by side using the same currency and the same stay scope. If one price is per night and another is for the stay, convert both to the full stay total. If a mandatory fee is payable at the property, add it to your mental total and mark the payment timing separately. Do not hide a difference by comparing a tax-inclusive total with a tax-exclusive headline.

7. Check private and direct-booking channels
Before deciding, sign in to the hotel’s loyalty program if you are willing to use it, check an advertised email or mobile offer, and call the property only through a verified contact method. Ask for the complete stay total and the same cancellation and payment conditions. A phone or closed-user quote is useful only if you receive the terms in writing or can see them in a confirmation flow.
Private pricing can beat a public OTA, but it may trade away points, third-party protection or flexible cancellation. Compare the product, not just the number.

8. Save evidence of the offer you accept
Save a screenshot or PDF of the final price, fee breakdown, room description, cancellation deadline and payment terms. Keep the confirmation email and the booking reference. This record helps if a displayed price changes, a mandatory fee is disputed or the property cannot locate the reservation.

Scenario: a lower nightly rate has a mandatory resort fee
One channel may advertise a lower room rate and add a resort or destination fee later. Another may show a higher nightly rate with that fee already included. Compare the complete stay totals and identify whether the fee is charged online or at the hotel.
Scenario: the cheaper rate is nonrefundable
If your dates could change, the refundable offer may be the lower-risk choice even when its total is higher. Compare the cancellation deadline and the amount lost after that deadline. Never label a nonrefundable rate “cheaper” without stating that it removes the refund option.
Scenario: pay-at-property changes the exposure
A pay-at-property rate can leave the final card charge exposed to currency movement or local taxes assessed at arrival. A prepaid rate can lock the amount earlier but may be harder to cancel. Record both the payment date and the charging currency.
Scenario: breakfast or parking changes the value
A room-only offer may look cheaper until you add breakfast or parking that another offer includes. Treat an inclusion as valuable only if you would otherwise purchase it, and verify whether the inclusion applies to every guest in the room.

Points, status credits, late checkout or a guaranteed room preference can matter. List those benefits separately from the cash total so you do not accidentally treat an uncertain perk as a guaranteed discount.
Common comparison mistakes and their fixes
- Comparing nightly headlines: Switch to the full-stay total and include mandatory fees.
- Ignoring occupancy: Re-enter the same adults, children and ages on every site.
- Matching only the room name: Check bed, view, smoking status, accessibility and included services.
- Overlooking the deadline time zone: Write the cancellation date and local time beside each offer.
- Assuming “taxes included” means every charge is included: Read the fee breakdown for resort, destination and facility charges.
- Forgetting pay-at-property amounts: Add them to the decision total and note when they are collected.
- Trusting a metasearch result after it changes: Reconfirm the provider’s final page immediately before payment.
- Assuming direct is always cheapest: Check private direct rates, but compare their terms and benefits with OTA offers.
- Using an unfamiliar currency conversion: Select the currency your card will actually be charged, if the site allows it, and check issuer fees.
- Failing to save proof: Keep the final page and confirmation, not just a search-result screenshot.
What to do when the price changes at checkout
- Stop before payment and capture the changed total and fee explanation.
- Check whether the room, guest count, dates, currency or cancellation option changed during the handoff.
- Return to the metasearch result and see whether the provider page still shows the earlier amount.
- Use the provider’s support channel if the comparison result and booking page conflict; provide the saved screenshot and the exact search time.
- If the total is no longer acceptable, leave without paying and compare the direct site and another reputable channel again.
Live inventory means a result can disappear or reprice. A screenshot documents what was shown; it does not guarantee that a room remains available. The booking confirmation and its stated terms determine the reservation you made.
Who is responsible when something goes wrong?
Identify the contracting and payment party before you book. A hotel may handle the room but an OTA may handle payment, cancellation or customer service. The confirmation should show whom to contact. If the hotel cannot find the reservation, contact the party that issued the confirmation first, then provide the hotel with the booking reference and guest name.
For a fee dispute, compare the saved final breakdown with the charge. Mandatory charges should have been disclosed before payment under the FTC rule for covered short-term-lodging sellers. A charge described as payable at the property may still be legitimate if it was clearly identified in the terms; the key question is whether it was mandatory and disclosed.
A compact checklist for every hotel search
- Enter identical dates, guests and rooms everywhere.
- Record the exact room, bed, occupancy, inclusions and cancellation deadline.
- Compare the official hotel site with at least one reputable OTA after checking a metasearch service.
- Use total-stay pricing and include mandatory fees, taxes and property-collected charges.
- Check payment timing, deposit, currency and conversion responsibility.
- Look for eligible loyalty, mobile, email, corporate or other private rates.
- Confirm the final booking-page total immediately before payment.
- Compare support responsibility and benefits, not only cash price.
- Save the final price, terms and confirmation.
What the evidence supports—and what it does not
Official policy guidance supports using complete totals and matching the provider’s booking-page amount to the comparison display. The FTC’s fee rule sets a disclosure requirement for the final amount before payment. UK guidance confirms that private or offline hotel rates can exist. These sources do not establish a universal percentage savings for booking direct, using an OTA or using metasearch. Any claim that one channel is always cheapest would overstate the evidence.
The reliable conclusion is procedural: the lowest price is discovered by comparing identical products at the final, fee-inclusive stage. Because rates and inventory are live, repeat the check if your booking is not made immediately.
