To find a GST rate, first identify the correct classification in the GST Portal’s Search HSN Code facility, then verify that classification against the complete CBIC rate-schedule entry, including its description, conditions, exceptions and later notifications. For goods, use the appropriate HSN; for services, use the service classification code known as SAC. A portal search result is a starting point for classification, not a final rate ruling for every transaction.
The reliable sequence is: describe the actual supply accurately, select the closest HSN or SAC result, read the matching CBIC schedule entry in full, check current amendments, and only then use the classification and rate for invoicing or return filing.

What HSN and SAC codes do in a GST lookup
HSN means Harmonized System of Nomenclature. It is used to classify goods. SAC is the service classification code used for services. The code connects a product or service to a description in the GST rate schedules, but the code alone does not settle every tax question. The schedule entry may contain conditions, exclusions, explanatory language or a special treatment that changes the result for a particular supply.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Everyday descriptions are often less precise than tariff language. A seller may call an item by a trade name while the schedule distinguishes it by material, processing, intended use or presentation. GSTN’s revamped search facility therefore accepts code searches and searches using commercial, trade or technical descriptions. The user still has to decide whether the suggested description actually matches the supply.

The five-step method
- Open the official search. On the GST Portal, go to Home > Services > User services > Search HSN Code. GSTN states that the facility is available before login and after login.
- Choose the search route. If you already know the code, select the HSN search option and enter it. If you do not know it, select description search, choose whether the supply is goods or services, and enter a trade, commercial or technical description.
- Review the candidates. The tool may suggest nearby codes or descriptions. Open the details and compare them with the actual product or service rather than accepting the first result.
- Verify the schedule entry. Take the candidate classification to the relevant CBIC GST rate schedule for goods or services. Read the complete entry, including conditions, exceptions and explanatory notes.
- Check current legal material and apply it. Look for relevant current Central Tax (Rate) or Integrated Tax (Rate) notifications where the schedule indicates an amendment or a special rule. Use the confirmed classification and rate in the applicable invoice and return workflow.
Step 1: open Search HSN Code on the GST Portal
Use the portal’s own navigation rather than an unofficial rate list. The current path is Home > Services > User services > Search HSN Code. The search can be used before or after signing in, which is useful when you are checking a prospective product before creating an invoice.
Have the facts of the supply ready before searching. A vague phrase such as a marketing name can return several nearby entries. A short description that states what the item is, what it is made of and how it is supplied generally produces more useful candidates.
Step 2: select goods or services and search correctly
When the code is already known
Select the HSN search option and enter the code. Confirm that the returned description is the one used by the current tariff or directory. Do not assume that a code copied from an old invoice, catalogue or third-party list remains correct after a classification change.

When the code is not known
Select description search and identify the supply as goods or services. Enter a description that reflects the actual transaction. GSTN supports commercial and trade wording as well as technical wording because businesses do not always know the formal tariff terminology.

Use several descriptive terms when necessary
If the first search is too broad, refine it with the material, function, form or service activity that distinguishes the supply. Avoid stuffing the search with unrelated marketing language. The objective is to find plausible code-description pairs for comparison, not to make the tool decide a disputed classification automatically.
Step 3: compare every suggested result with the actual supply
Search suggestions are leads. GSTN describes the facility as suggesting possible nearby descriptions or codes; it does not turn a suggestion into an automatic determination that the classification is right. Open the detailed description for each plausible result and compare it with the goods or service you will actually supply.
| Comparison | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Goods versus services | Is the transaction a physical product or a service activity? | The portal and the CBIC schedules use separate classification paths. |
| Trade wording versus tariff wording | Does the formal description cover the item sold, not merely its brand or market name? | Common names can hide distinctions used by the tariff. |
| Composition and attributes | Does the result require a particular material, mixture, weight, processing stage or presentation? | Those facts can move a supply to another entry. |
| Scope of the transaction | Are you classifying the individual item, a package, or a bundled supply? | The applicable entry may depend on what is supplied together and how it is presented. |
Why product facts can change the classification
Do not settle a code until you have recorded the attributes that the schedule might distinguish. Depending on the product, useful facts can include:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- principal material, fibre, ingredient or composition;
- percentage or proportion of constituent materials where relevant;
- processing, coating, finishing or conversion performed;
- physical form, dimensions, fabric weight or packing;
- intended use or technical function;
- whether the item is sold alone, as a set or with another item; and
- how the product is described on specifications, labels and commercial documents.
CBIC’s rate FAQs illustrate why this matters with sarees. The classification can vary according to constituent fibre, and cotton sarees are further distinguished by fabric weight. That example does not mean every product is classified by fibre or weight; it shows why the facts named in the applicable schedule entry must be checked rather than inferred from a broad retail label.

Never shorten an HSN by dropping digits
An eight-digit HSN should not be converted into a presumed six-digit code simply by deleting its final two digits. GSTN has warned that the resulting six-digit number may not itself be a valid tariff entry. Verify the complete code and its description in the official search or directory, and use the level required by the applicable invoicing or reporting process.
If an older document contains a shorter code, treat it as a prompt to recheck, not as proof that the shorter number is valid. A structurally plausible number can still point to no current entry or to a different classification.
Step 4: verify the result in the CBIC rate schedule
After the portal search, move to the CBIC GST Goods and Services Rates material. Locate the entry that corresponds to the complete HSN or SAC classification and read the entire row or paragraph. The rate is only one part of the entry.
The Tool Desk

| Classification reference | The full HSN or SAC level and any subheading named in the entry. |
| Description | Whether the statutory wording covers the exact goods or service supplied. |
| Rate | The rate attached to that precise entry, not a rate copied from a broad category. |
| Conditions | Requirements, thresholds, end-use limitations or other facts that must be satisfied. |
| Exceptions and exclusions | Items carved out of the general entry or assigned to another treatment. |
| Effective amendments | Whether a later Central Tax (Rate) or Integrated Tax (Rate) notification changed the entry. |
CBIC publishes separate schedules for goods and services. Use the schedule that matches the classification path you selected. If the entry refers to a notification, exemption, explanation or condition, read that material before putting the rate on an invoice.

Step 5: check notifications and the transaction date
Rate schedules can be amended. CBIC maintains indexes for Central Tax (Rate) Notifications and Integrated Tax (Rate) Notifications. Check those legal materials when the schedule entry, an explanatory note or a recent business change indicates that a notification may apply.
Record the date on which you made the determination and retain the supporting description, product specifications and schedule entry. This creates an audit trail when a rate changes or when another person later reviews the invoice. Do not describe a rate as permanent unless the current legal material supports that conclusion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.How to find a SAC for a service
For a service, choose the services path in the GST Portal search and use a description of the activity delivered to the customer. Describe the substantive service rather than only the industry in which the provider operates. For example, a provider should identify the actual work performed, deliverable or access supplied and any bundled elements that form part of the transaction.
Recommended Free Tools
Open the suggested service classification and compare its detailed wording with contracts, statements of work and invoices. Then verify the matching service entry in the CBIC schedule, including any conditions or exceptions. GST Portal guidance distinguishes a service classification entry from a goods HSN entry, so a goods code should not be reused merely because the service involves a physical product.
Best Value
Applying the confirmed classification to invoicing and returns
Once the classification and applicable rate are verified, carry the same code-description decision into the invoicing system and the relevant return workflow. GSTN guidance for outward supplies describes HSN/SAC reporting in GSTR-1. Ensure that the code in the invoice, accounting records and return is consistent with the verified classification and with the level of detail required for your filing.
- Keep the product or service description aligned with the schedule entry.
- Do not replace a verified full code with a shortened code for convenience.
- Where a single invoice contains different supplies, classify each line or bundle according to the applicable rules rather than applying one rate to everything.
- Retain specifications and the reasoning for choosing among close search results.
Two practical examples of the reasoning process
Example: a textile product
A seller searching for a saree should not stop at the word saree. The seller should record the fibre and, where relevant, the fabric weight, compare the detailed search results, and then read the CBIC entry that matches those facts. The correct rate cannot be stated from the retail name alone because the CBIC example distinguishes classifications using those attributes.
Example: a packaged service
A provider selling implementation, support and access together should describe what the customer receives and determine whether the transaction is one service, multiple services or a bundle under the applicable rules. Search each plausible service description, compare the detailed wording with the contract, and verify the resulting schedule entry and conditions. Do not select a SAC solely because it resembles the provider’s business title.
Common lookup mistakes and fixes
| Problem | Why it happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Choosing the first search result | Nearby descriptions look similar. | Read each detailed description and compare it with the actual supply and specifications. |
| Using a broad everyday label | Trade language omits material or processing details. | Add the attributes that the schedule distinguishes and review the candidate entries. |
| Using a goods HSN for a service | The provider focuses on the equipment or industry involved. | Use the services search path and classify the activity delivered. |
| Dropping the last two digits | An older document shows a shorter number. | Verify the complete code; truncation can create an invalid six-digit number. |
| Reading only the rate column | The headline percentage appears conclusive. | Read the description, conditions, exceptions and related notification. |
| Relying on an old schedule copy | Saved spreadsheets and invoices are not updated. | Check current CBIC schedules and relevant rate notifications for the transaction date. |
| Applying one rate to a bundle automatically | Several items appear on one invoice. | Analyze the bundled supply and the applicable classification rules before invoicing. |
When a professional classification review is sensible
Use professional advice when two schedule entries remain plausible, the product has unusual composition or processing, a bundle contains materially different elements, or the tax result depends on a condition that your documents do not clearly establish. The official portal helps identify candidates, but it cannot resolve every fact-intensive classification dispute.
Give the reviewer the complete product specification or service contract, photographs or technical literature where relevant, packaging and billing details, the candidate codes, and the CBIC entries you considered. A precise fact record is more useful than sending only a trade name.
A repeatable checklist for every new item
- Write a plain-language description of what is supplied.
- Decide whether it is goods or a service.
- Record composition, processing, use, presentation and bundle details that may distinguish entries.
- Search the GST Portal by the known code or by a detailed description.
- Compare more than one candidate and reject descriptions that do not fit the facts.
- Verify the complete HSN or SAC without truncating digits.
- Read the full CBIC schedule entry, including conditions and exceptions.
- Check relevant current Central Tax (Rate) or Integrated Tax (Rate) notifications.
- Document the decision and use the same classification in the invoice and GSTR-1 workflow.
- Set a review trigger for changes in the product, service, contract or law.
What the lookup can and cannot tell you
The GST Portal search is the quickest official way to discover candidate HSN or SAC classifications, whether you search before or after login. CBIC schedules and notifications provide the authoritative rate layer. Neither a search suggestion nor a broad product label guarantees a rate without matching the full facts and the current legal entry. If the product or service details are not supplied, no single rate can be determined responsibly.
