To find the cheapest gas or petrol near you, use a fuel-price service that covers your location, select the exact fuel type and grade your vehicle needs, then compare each station’s listed price with its distance and update time. A low price may not save money if reaching the station adds a costly detour. Check that any discount applies to you, and verify the pump price if a listing looks stale or differs from the forecourt sign.
How to compare local fuel prices
- Search your area. Enter your postcode, ZIP code, suburb or current location in a service that covers your country and locality.
- Select the right fuel. Choose the type and grade your vehicle requires, such as petrol or diesel and the appropriate grade. Prices for a different fuel are not a useful comparison.
- Compare station listings. Look at the listed price, practical distance and displayed update time for several nearby forecourts.
- Weigh the detour. Check whether a cheaper station is on your planned route or requires extra driving. Its overall value depends on the extra distance, traffic and your vehicle’s fuel economy; a lower per-litre price does not automatically mean a lower-cost trip.
- Check discounts and the pump. Count a loyalty or membership discount only if you qualify and the station participates. If the listing is old or conflicts with the sign, use the forecourt price as the check before filling up.
Which fuel-price service should you use?
Coverage, data sources, update frequency and features vary by country, jurisdiction and provider. Prefer a service that covers the station you need and makes its location and price timestamp clear. Directions, opening hours and alerts can be helpful, but they do not make an outdated price reliable.

United Kingdom
The UK government’s Fuel Finder provides current retail prices by fuel type, station details, amenities, opening hours and update timestamps. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero says prices are published within 30 minutes of a change; its driver factsheet says stations must report changes within that interval. This describes the government reporting and publication system, not a promise that every third-party app refreshes at the same moment. See the Fuel Finder data guidance.

A government release dated 31 March 2026 lists services using Fuel Finder data, including Confused.com, DriveScore, Fuel Finder UK, Fuel Spy, MotorMouth, PetrolPrices.com and RAC Fuel Watch. These are examples, not endorsements or guarantees that a service will remain available. The government says drivers can report a mismatch between Fuel Finder data and a station’s displayed price; details are in its Fuel Finder announcement.

The same release estimates Fuel Finder could save car-owning households an average of £40 a year. That is a government projection, not a guaranteed or independently measured saving for an individual driver.

AAA Club Alliance’s gas-price finder accepts a city and state or ZIP code, and AAA says its listings are updated daily. Its app also offers local low-price searches and directions. AAA’s national dashboard provides averages by fuel grade and time period. An average gives price context; it does not tell you which nearby station has the lowest current price. AAA also lists savings at participating Shell and Love’s locations, but eligibility and terms apply, so check the program details before including a discount in your comparison.

In Australia, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission found more than 40 fuel-price apps and websites during the first half of 2024. Its review says the information and features available depend on local transparency schemes and the provider. Where a government-operated scheme exists, its tools may offer comprehensive near-real-time comparisons; other services may emphasize convenience or incentives. How to tell whether a lower price is worth the drive
Compare the likely total cost, not just the cents or pence per litre. A station farther away adds travel distance, and the cost of that detour depends on your route, traffic and vehicle economy. There is no universal break-even distance: a station on a journey you already planned may be worthwhile, while a special trip for a small price difference may not be.
For a practical comparison, note the displayed price, distance and update time for a few suitable stations. Then decide whether the cheapest option is close to your route and whether the savings apply to the fuel you need. Do not treat a national average as a substitute for a station-level listing.

What to do when a price looks wrong
Fuel prices can change, and a third-party listing may not reflect the latest pump price. Check the timestamp, compare the listing with the station’s forecourt sign and, if they conflict, confirm the price at the station before buying. In the UK, drivers can report a discrepancy between a forecourt price and Fuel Finder data through the government service.
