Set a spending limit first, shortlist games by genre and session style, then check regional prices and price history before buying. A discount or a high review score cannot tell you whether a game suits you.
Set your budget and playtime limits first
Choose a total amount you are comfortable spending, then set a maximum price for one game. The per-game ceiling helps prevent a large discount from making an otherwise unwanted purchase seem worthwhile.

Think about your available time in practical terms rather than aiming for a particular number of hours per dollar:
- Short sessions: Look for games you can enjoy in brief, self-contained play periods, and check whether they require long stretches of uninterrupted play.
- A few evenings: Consider whether the game has a clear stopping point or can be played in separate chapters, missions, or matches.
- An ongoing game: Check whether repeatable modes, co-op, or multiplayer are part of what you want, and whether you expect to keep returning to it.
These are ways to describe your own schedule, not guarantees about how long a specific game will take. Genre and review score alone do not establish likely playtime.

Use Steam discovery tools to build a shortlist
Search Steam by title, tag, or description, then narrow results with relevant tags, features, operating system, and language. Personalized recommendations, the Discovery Queue, and curator recommendations can help surface candidates; treat them as discovery aids, not quality guarantees. Steam’s discovery overview describes these tools, along with wishlist, follow, and ignore controls. Because that overview dates from 2014, interface details may have changed.
When a candidate catches your interest, use the store page to check its genre, available modes, system requirements, and reviews. Look for details that answer your own questions: Does it support solo play or co-op? Does it require an internet connection or other players? Do its modes and structure fit the sessions you can make time for? Reviews can provide context, but neither a score nor a genre label promises that you will enjoy it.

Compare the current price with price history
Check the price shown for your actual Steam account region; prices and sale inventory can differ and change. Compare that price with past prices before deciding whether to buy now or wait.
Steam wishlist notifications
Steam says its wishlist can notify you when a game on it goes on sale. Add a candidate to your wishlist if it interests you but exceeds your price ceiling. Steam also says it cannot refund a price difference; its purchasing FAQ describes requesting a refund and repurchasing as a possible route, subject to eligibility.

SteamDB price history and sale filters
SteamDB provides historical prices, sale filters, watchlists, and Steam wishlist import. A past low is useful context, not a forecast: SteamDB says publishers determine discounts and that it cannot know the exact price or discount a game will receive in a future sale.

IsThereAnyDeal offers game price history and configurable waitlist notifications, and lets users import a Steam wishlist. Set an alert around the price you chose, rather than letting a promotion decide your budget for you.

Decide whether the game is worth buying for you
Before checkout, compare the candidate with your own priorities:
- Interest: Would you choose to play it if it were not on sale?
- Price: Is the current price within your per-game limit, and does its history help you feel comfortable buying now?
- Time fit: Does its structure work with the sessions you realistically have? Do not treat an advertised or estimated duration as a promise of personal playtime.
- Play style: Does it suit your preference for solo, co-op, or multiplayer play, and does it offer the replay or repeatable modes you value?
- Practical fit: Is the correct edition selected, and will the game run on your operating system and hardware?
A steep discount on a game you are unlikely to play is still spending, not saving. A historical low tells you what happened before; it does not guarantee that the same price will return.

Check these details before checkout
- Confirm the current price for your account region.
- Check that you selected the intended edition and understand which DLC, if any, is included.
- Review system requirements and confirm multiplayer or co-op needs match your plans.
- Make sure the purchase remains within your budget after accounting for any other games you intend to buy.
Do not change your Steam store region to seek a lower price; the relevant comparison is the price and availability for your own account region.
Know what Steam’s refund rule does—and does not—mean
Steam Support says: “Valve will, upon request via help.steampowered.com, issue a refund for any title that is requested within 14 days of purchase and has been played for less than 2 hours (this includes online, offline and shared library playtime).” See the full Common Refund Questions for the policy and its terms. This is a refund threshold, not a guaranteed free demo or a reason to buy a game you are unsure about.
