To find a genuinely good Steam sale price, compare what you would pay in your own currency with the game’s recorded price history—not just the percentage off. Wishlist games you want before a sale, check their price history and relevant bundles, then buy only when the current price fits your budget.
How to tell whether a Steam discount is actually good
A large discount percentage can still leave a game above its previous sale prices. Start with the current price in your Steam store region, then compare it with the game’s recorded lows and earlier sale prices. SteamDB provides price tables and graphs for games, packages, and bundles; its price-history and sale tools also let you filter sale listings.

Check the currency and date range shown on the history page before calling a price an all-time low. A tracker can report the lowest price captured during its own recording window, which may not cover the game’s full history. SteamDB says it tracks prices in 41 Steam currencies and has data going back to 2012; those are SteamDB’s claims about its service, not an independently audited measure.
- Current price: What you would actually pay in your own store currency.
- Recorded low: The lowest price shown for the game, together with the history’s date range and currency.
- Past sale prices: Whether the current offer is similar to, better than, or above earlier recorded discounts.
- Your threshold: The amount you are willing to spend for this game—not an arbitrary discount percentage.
A discount is valuable only if the game is worth the final price to you. A percentage-off label alone cannot establish that.

Use your Wishlist to catch sale notifications
Add games you are interested in to your Steam Wishlist ahead of time. Steam Support points users to the Wishlist for sale notifications, and Valve says an eligible discount of 20% or greater triggers an email notification to players who have the game wishlisted. A notification is a prompt to check the offer, not proof that it is the game’s lowest price. Open the game’s price history and compare the current price before deciding.

Filter the sale to games you might actually buy
Steam’s sale listings are easier to use when you begin with your own shortlist and budget rather than browsing every discount. SteamDB’s sales page documents filters for price, discount percentage, tags, features, release date, wishlist status, owned games, and followed games. Use those filters to narrow the field, then evaluate individual titles against their price histories.
SteamDB is an independent third-party service, not an official Steam valuation or endorsement. Its recorded history can help you compare prices, but it cannot determine whether a game is worth the money to you.

Compare bundles and other storefront offers carefully
A bundle or another legitimate storefront may change the value of an offer. SteamDB lists bundles and provides guidance on filtering sale listings; it also recommends comparing stores because another store may sometimes sell a Steam key for less.
Compare like with like: the same game edition, region, and license type. A lower price for a different edition or a different kind of license is not a direct comparison. Check the terms of any alternative seller before buying.

Buy now or wait for another sale?
Steam has four major seasonal sales—Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter—but a future discount for a particular game is never guaranteed. Publishers set discounts, and SteamDB says it cannot know which games or prices will be discounted in an upcoming sale. Past sale frequency and depth can help you judge what might happen; they are not a promise that the same price will return.

Steam sale dates to check
Valve’s Steamworks schedule lists the Autumn Sale 2026 for October 1–8, 2026, and the Winter Sale 2026 for December 17, 2026–January 4, 2027. Dates are time-sensitive: check Valve’s schedule and the live Steam sale page for current availability and the actual end time before relying on them. SteamDB’s sale calendar describes the four seasonal events and says sale prices have not changed during an event since flash and daily deals were removed in 2015; treat that as SteamDB’s secondary guidance, not a guarantee about future sale mechanics.
A quick buying checklist
- Add games you genuinely want to your Steam Wishlist before a sale.
- Use sale filters to find titles that fit your interests and budget.
- Open each game’s price history; check its currency and recorded date range.
- Compare the current price with previous prices, not only the discount percentage.
- Check relevant bundles or legitimate storefront alternatives, matching edition, region, and license type.
- Buy if the price meets your threshold; otherwise keep the game wishlisted and wait without assuming a future discount.
Do not change your Steam account region to chase a lower regional price. SteamDB’s price-history FAQ says changing region for a lower price violates Steam’s Terms of Service. Use the prices for your own store region when making comparisons.
