How to Find Tech Jobs on Seattle’s Eastside During a Hiring Slowdown

Seattle-area tech hiring has weakened, but the picture varies by location and occupation. Treat Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland and other Eastside cities as separate search areas, use regional labor data to choose where and what to look for, then verify every opening on the employer’s career site. Bellevue’s recent job growth is a reason to search there—not proof that tech vacancies are plentiful.

What the Seattle-area hiring slowdown means

Recent indicators point to a strained, uneven market rather than a complete halt in hiring. The Workforce Development Council of Seattle-King County’s Workforce Index reports 68,932 openings across 9,995 unique employers in King County during April–May 2026, with a median advertised salary of $88,320. Those figures cover all occupations and are a dated snapshot, not a live count of technology vacancies. The same index reports King County unemployment at 4.7% through May 2026. Workforce Index

The index says 12 of its 20 most-posted roles were frontline or service occupations and describes hiring demand as plateauing. KUOW, reporting WDC data on July 22, 2026, said listings were shifting toward healthcare and frontline services while tech and science postings declined. Software-engineer openings fell 56% in the measured month; truck-driver openings rose 231% and security-guard openings 146%. These are changes in postings, not hires, and one month does not establish a lasting trend. KUOW’s report

Layoff notices add context but need careful interpretation. The Workforce Index counted 7,453 King County workers affected by WARN notices from January through June 2026; 5,481 were in the information sector through June 8. A separate Axios report counted 9,027 workers affected by notices across King and other counties through August 18, including 6,766 in information. WARN notices concern planned layoffs, not necessarily completed job losses. Washington’s chief labor economist Anneliese Vance-Sherman described information-sector employment as relatively flat after a 2022–23 decline, calling flat growth unusual for the sector. Why search Bellevue and the Eastside separately

City-level employment trends show why a Seattle-only search can miss opportunities. GeekWire reported that, from 2024 to 2025, Bellevue gained 5,375 jobs while Seattle shed 18,065, citing a Downtown Seattle Association report. It also reported that Amazon employed 15,700 people in Bellevue at the end of 2025, citing Bellevue’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report. The job gains are across employment overall; they do not show how many were technology roles or whether Amazon—or any other employer—has vacancies now. Run searches for Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland and other relevant Eastside cities as distinct locations from Seattle. A posting can name an employer headquartered on the Eastside while the actual team, worksite or required office days are elsewhere. Check each listing for the specific city, remote or hybrid terms, required onsite schedule and current status before investing time in an application.

Build a location-and-role search, not just a company list

Start with official regional indicators

Washington Employment Security Department (ESD) employer-demand reports describe employer needs by location and occupation. Its supply-and-demand reports compare job openings with unemployment-benefit claimants. Use the current reports to identify patterns and areas to investigate, not to assume a particular role is open at a particular company. ESD employer-demand reports and ESD supply-and-demand reports

The Workforce Development Council’s Workforce Index can add King County indicators, occupational patterns and links to support. Read the dates and measurement windows attached to each figure: the openings, unemployment, and WARN measures do not cover identical periods. Its report that artificial intelligence was the fastest-growing skill in postings does not mean AI expertise is required for every technology job. Workforce Index

Search adjacent titles that fit your experience

Do not rely only on “software engineer” or a short list of large tech companies. If they match your skills, try neighboring functions and title variants such as systems, cloud operations, security, data, technical program management, customer engineering and IT support. This is a way to widen the search, not a claim that every one of those fields is currently growing. Look at the responsibilities and required skills rather than assuming titles mean the same thing across employers.

Confirm the vacancy at the source

Use job boards or company lists to discover leads, then open the employer’s own careers page. Confirm the requisition is still active, note its location and work arrangement, and compare the stated requirements with your experience. Regional totals cannot tell you whether a specific Eastside team is hiring today.

Compare actual Eastside and Seattle listings

There is no comparable live count of technology vacancies or role-level pay across Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland and Seattle in the cited figures. Compare postings directly instead of inferring a better market from citywide employment totals.

  • Role: Compare the work and seniority level, not just the title.
  • Location and commute: Check the worksite city, office-day requirements and realistic travel time.
  • Work arrangement: Distinguish genuinely remote roles from hybrid or onsite positions.
  • Employer and team: Assess the team’s stated responsibilities and available information about its stability.
  • Compensation and benefits: Compare the actual listing terms; the countywide median advertised salary is not a technology-role benchmark.
  • Skills match: Prioritize roles whose stated requirements align with your experience, and identify any gaps before applying.
