To find tech work in Leeds, choose a role family, compare your experience with live vacancy requirements, and build evidence that matches the advert. Useful local starting points include Leeds City Council’s IT Talent Management Programme, its apprenticeship routes, the Leeds jobs and skills directory, and Jobshops application support. These signposts can help you find opportunities, but none guarantees that a particular role is open.

Start by choosing the kind of tech work you want

“Tech job” covers very different work, and the best route depends on what you want to do. Leeds City Council’s Integrated Digital Service (IDS) describes work spanning strategy and innovation, digital change, cloud and platform, programmes and portfolio, business services, technology, information governance and cybersecurity, and data analytics. Its profile says the team’s roles range from IT support to enterprise architecture, software development and data science. That is an example of the variety in one large local public-sector team, not a complete map of Leeds employers.

Use role families to narrow your search, then check actual adverts for the tools, experience and qualifications they ask for:

  • IT support and service desk: helping people resolve technical problems and use workplace systems.
  • Software development and testing: building or checking digital services and applications.
  • Data analysis and data science: interpreting data and communicating findings.
  • Business analysis and digital change: understanding needs, improving processes and helping deliver change.
  • Cloud, platforms, networks and DevOps: maintaining the infrastructure and services that digital products rely on.
  • Cybersecurity and information governance: managing security, risk and the responsible handling of information.

Leeds City Council’s 2026–2030 plan identifies Digital and Tech as a major growth sector and describes work with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, education providers and businesses to align skills and training with employer needs. The plan also describes digital-skills provision in community venues through 100% Digital Leeds. These are strategic commitments, not confirmation that a specific course or vacancy is available now. See the Leeds City Council 2026–2030 Council Plan.

Compare the main local routes into tech

Leeds City Council’s Integrated Digital Service is one concrete local example of a digital employer. The council says IDS has 600 staff and supports both the council and NHS partners at the Leeds Integrated Care Board. It offers a sense of the range of work available in a large digital organisation, but it is not a census of the city’s employers or a count of current vacancies. See the Integrated Digital Services profile.

Route Who it may suit What the council describes What to verify
IT Talent Management Programme apprenticeship People seeking paid work-based learning; check the individual vacancy’s eligibility. Two-year Level 4 apprenticeships combining work-based learning and formal training. The programme page listed AI and automation, business analysis, data analysis, software development and software testing as expected specialisms for its 2026 cohort. The 2026 dates were subject to confirmation and have passed. Check the council recruitment platform for a live vacancy or later cohort, and read its specific requirements.
IT Talent Management Programme graduate route Applicants with a bachelor’s degree or higher, subject to the vacancy criteria. The page listed AI and automation, DevOps, digital workplace and networks as expected specialisms for the September 2026 cohort. The cohort timing was subject to confirmation. Check whether a later intake or current vacancy has been advertised.
Other Leeds City Council apprenticeships Applicants who meet the relevant vacancy criteria and want paid work alongside study. The council describes paid apprenticeships with funded study and qualifications from Level 2 to Level 6; available roles vary with service need. Digital is one of several occupational areas. The council’s general eligibility information says applicants must be at least 16, live in England, not be in full-time education while undertaking the apprenticeship, and meet council values and behaviours. Confirm details on the specific advert.
Direct vacancy with a council or other employer Applicants whose experience and skills match the advertised role, including people changing fields. IDS describes roles across support, specialist technology, data, change and governance. Requirements, pay, location, working hours, hybrid arrangements and selection stages are employer- and vacancy-specific; do not assume them from a general careers page.

The council’s IT Talent Management Programme page explains its programme and its apprenticeship and graduate specialisms. The council says successful apprentices may be able to move into permanent roles where a suitable opportunity exists; this is a possibility, not a guaranteed outcome.

Find current opportunities and local application help

Use directories and support services to find leads, but treat the live advert as authoritative. The Leeds jobs and skills page signposts council vacancies, apprenticeship support, the Leeds Employment Hub for job or training help, the Leeds Learning Hub for courses, Jobshops, and weekly job and apprenticeship alerts. The council says Jobshops can help with CVs, application forms and interviews. Check each service’s current page for availability and eligibility.

  1. Check council vacancies: begin with the Leeds jobs and skills directory and follow its links to live listings and support.
  2. Set up alerts: use the weekly job and apprenticeship alerts signposted by the council, then assess each new advert against your target role family.
  3. Get application help if useful: contact a Jobshop for help with your CV, application form or interview preparation; use the Employment Hub or Learning Hub if you need job, training or course signposting.
  4. Check the programme page separately: dates announced for a past cohort are not evidence of a current opening. Look for a live listing on the council recruitment platform.

For a wider way to meet employers, Leeds City Council announced a Careers in Leeds fair for Tuesday 3 November 2026, including a Digital zone and a support zone with tailored opportunities for people with SEND and a quiet period. Check the event page for up-to-date attendance and event information before making plans. The council described its Leeds Apprenticeship Fair as the largest in the North; that is the council’s statement, not an independently verified ranking.

Build evidence that matches the advert

Read the essential criteria first. Leeds City Council advises applicants to check eligibility, gather documents such as a CV and academic certificates, and identify skills, qualifications, experience and digital projects relevant to the role. Its programme application process is online; shortlisting is against essential requirements, with shortlisted applicants invited to an in-person group assessment and interview. Follow the instructions in the live advert, since selection stages can vary by role.

Make your evidence specific to the work. These are practical examples inferred from the role families the council lists, not official or guaranteed selection criteria:

  • Software development: describe a relevant project, your contribution and how you approached a technical problem.
  • Data analysis: explain a data task, the steps you took and how you communicated the result.
  • Software testing: show how you checked a service systematically and recorded or explained issues.
  • Business analysis: give an example of clarifying a problem, understanding needs or explaining information clearly.
  • Support or service desk: show how you helped someone resolve a problem and communicated the steps.

Use examples from employment, study, volunteering or personal projects where relevant, and be clear about what you personally did. Do not assume a project substitutes for a qualification or experience that the advert marks essential.

Choose training and compare offers carefully

If you need a structured entry route, compare an apprenticeship with a graduate role or direct vacancy on the details that affect your circumstances. Apprenticeships combine paid work and funded study, while the council’s graduate route is described for people with a bachelor’s degree or higher. For any option, confirm the live advert’s eligibility, role content, hours, location, pay, study arrangements and assessment format rather than inferring them from a programme description.

The council’s apprenticeship page reports that, in its latest survey, 88% said their apprenticeship supported their personal development at work, 88% were satisfied with tutor support, and 85% were satisfied with training quality. It also says 64% had secured a promotion within Leeds City Council. The page does not state the survey year, and these figures are not identified as outcomes for digital apprentices specifically. Treat them as council-wide programme context, not a forecast of an individual result. See the council apprenticeships page.

Think about progression as well as your first job

A first role can build experience for a move into another specialism, but progression depends on opportunities and individual circumstances. A Leeds City Council employee profile offers one example: Michal says he started on the service desk, moved into assistive technology work and later became a Service Centre Team Leader. He describes moving upward or between teams as ways to broaden skills. This is one employee’s account, not a promise that every role has the same progression path. The IDS profile gives more context on the service and its work.

A practical search plan

  1. Choose one or two role families. Start with the work you want to do, not just the word “technology.”
  2. Collect live adverts. Use the council directory, employer career pages and relevant alerts; distinguish active vacancies from descriptions of past or expected cohorts.
  3. Make a criteria checklist. Record each advert’s essential qualifications, experience, eligibility, location and selection process.
  4. Match evidence to criteria. Tailor your CV and examples to the role, and gather certificates or other requested documents.
  5. Fill a specific gap. If you lack a requirement, explore relevant training through the Leeds Learning Hub or apprenticeship support, and recheck the vacancy criteria before investing time or money.
  6. Apply and prepare for the stated assessment. Use Jobshops if you want local help with the form, CV or interview, and follow the employer’s instructions.

Leeds City Council’s 2026–2030 plan describes a city of around 812,000 residents, citing ONS 2023, and a £36 billion economy; it gives the wider city-region population as 2.3 million. These figures provide context for the local setting, not evidence of a particular number of tech vacancies or a guaranteed hiring trend.
