What is currently known about access in Fiji?
A WHO- and UNDP-commissioned rapid assessment published in December 2025 described sterile injecting-equipment access as exceptionally limited, with barriers including scarcity, stigma and pharmacies refusing sales without prescriptions. In interviews for that assessment, every participant said they had at some time reused a needle or syringe after someone else. That finding applies to the interview participants, not to the population of Fiji as a whole. WHO’s December 2025 summary and the assessment report describe the problem, especially in Suva.

In February 2026, WHO said Fiji was accelerating development of needle and syringe programmes (NSPs), with health services, pharmacies and outreach—including peer outreach—considered as possible distribution channels. That describes an implementation direction, not a list of confirmed, operating locations. The sources do not establish a current NSP address, opening hours, entry criteria or disposal arrangements. WHO’s account of Fiji’s harm-reduction response does not provide a service directory.
If you need supplies for prescribed treatment
For insulin or another prescribed injection, contact the clinician who manages your treatment or your local health centre. Ask where to obtain the correct sterile supplies, whether you need a prescription, whether supplies are available, and how used sharps should be stored and disposed of. Follow your prescriber’s instructions for the device and its use.

A Fiji Ministry of Health advisory from 2015 described nurses using needles and syringes to administer medication and said insulin-dependent children and young patients could receive supplies for home administration after training. It also noted that pharmacists dispensing prescribed insulin did not necessarily dispense needles and syringes. This is historical guidance, not confirmation of current practice or stock, and it does not establish that any particular health centre or pharmacy supplies them today. Ask a local health service or contact the Ministry of Health to confirm whether an authorised NSP is now operating and, if so, where and how to access it. Confirm the details directly before travelling:

- Whether the service is open, its location and hours.
- Who can use it and whether an appointment, referral or identification is required.
- What sterile equipment is available and whether there is a return or safe-disposal service.
- How the service handles privacy and confidentiality.
WHO has identified health facilities, pharmacies and outreach as possible ways to distribute equipment, but the sources do not confirm participating providers. Do not assume that a named pharmacy—or a pharmacy generally—has stock or will sell without a prescription.

The current pharmacy rules and dispensing practices are not settled by the sources reviewed. The Fiji Times reported in August 2025 that Health Minister Dr Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu said a prescription was required to buy needles and syringes at pharmacies. That is a news report of the minister’s statement, not confirmation of the rule in force today. Call the pharmacy and check with your clinician or the Ministry before relying on it. Similarly, Parliament’s bills index lists the HIV/AIDS (Amendment) Bill 2026, but the voting-results page reviewed does not show a vote on it. Those pages alone do not establish whether the bill passed, received assent, commenced or changed protections for authorised distributors. Use sterile equipment and handle used sharps safely
Do not share or reuse needles or syringes. The December 2025 assessment documented reuse among its interview participants, and Fiji’s Health Minister told WHO that sterile supplies play an important role in preventing infections linked to equipment sharing. Ask a clinician or an operating NSP for instructions on safe disposal; do not put loose sharps where another person could be injured.

The Fiji Medicine Regulatory Authority says its remit includes medical devices as well as medicinal products, with activities including registration, import permits, inspections and licensing.
