Start by matching a program to a girl’s age, location, interests, schedule, and preferred format—then confirm the current eligibility and application details on the provider’s official page. Opportunities range from short events and camps to online coding programs, NASA challenges and internships, and ongoing mentor relationships; not every program includes recurring one-to-one mentoring.
Choose the kind of opportunity she wants
Before searching, write down the learner’s grade or age, location, interests, accessibility needs, and practical constraints. Decide whether she is looking for a one-time event, a recurring club, a summer camp, a competition, a research experience, an internship, or a mentor relationship. “STEAM” can cover science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics, but a specific opportunity may focus on only one field.

For each possibility, compare age or grade eligibility, location, subject, online or in-person format, duration, cost and financial support, prerequisites, application route, and schedule. These details vary from program to program, so an opportunity finder is a starting point rather than proof that a particular activity is suitable.
Use trusted local and national starting points
Ask a school counselor or STEM teacher about local clubs, recommendations, and nomination-based programs. Public libraries, museums, science centers, universities, and nearby organizations may also know about events and classes. For national starting points, check the providers’ current official pages:

- NASA STEM Gateway is a broad opportunity finder that lists activities such as challenges, research, internships, educator development, and pre-college and college STEM experiences. Each listing has its own eligibility requirements.
Check eligibility before investing time in an application
Read the specific opportunity listing—not just a program overview—before preparing materials or making plans. Verify the grade or age range, geographic limits, prerequisites, dates, cost and aid, and whether an applicant needs a recommendation, teacher nomination, or other selection step. For opportunities involving minors, also look for clear contact, supervision, and safeguarding arrangements.
NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement internships are for eligible college students and certain educators enrolled as students; their rules do not apply to every NASA student activity. NASA’s Internship Programs FAQ says applicants must be U.S. citizens, enrolled part-time or full-time in college, have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, and be at least 16 at the time of application. Check the FAQ and the individual internship listing for the current requirements and application details.

Tell role models apart from ongoing mentorship
A program may introduce participants to women in a field without providing a recurring, matched mentor. Look for precise language about what mentor contact involves. If the page is unclear, ask the organizer:
Recommended Free Tools
- Are mentors guest speakers, group leaders, or matched one-to-one?
- How often do participants meet, and for how long?
- Is a mentor match guaranteed, or are mentors available only when capacity allows?
- How are meetings supervised, and what communication policies apply to minors?
NASA has described opportunities for girls to engage with its missions and meet people working in STEM. In a NASA article, Kris Brown, deputy associate administrator of NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement, said: “It’s so important for girls to have opportunities to engage with NASA’s missions and to see astronauts, engineers, scientists, and other specialists who look like them,” (NASA). Treat exposure to role models as valuable, but confirm separately whether a particular activity offers continuing mentorship.
