How to Find Sewage Spill Alerts and Water Quality Reports Near You in Wales

Use three official sources together: Natural Resources Wales (NRW) bathing-water pages for laboratory sample results and annual classifications, your local water company’s storm-overflow map for monitored overflow activity, and NRW’s annual spill-data reports for historical, regulator-reviewed context. They answer different questions. An overflow alert is not a water-quality test, and a clean result from a designated bathing-water sample does not prove that every nearby river stretch is safe at every moment.

The quickest way to check a place in Wales

Start by identifying the exact named beach, lake, river access point or bathing place. Then choose the source that matches the question you are asking:

Your question Use this source What it measures Typical timing
What did testing find at this designated bathing water? NRW bathing-water site profile and “Check bathing water quality” results Sampled bacteria, including E. coli and intestinal enterococci, plus the annual classification Individual samples during the bathing season; classification published annually
Is a monitored storm overflow operating or has it recently operated? The relevant water company’s storm-overflow map Event Duration Monitor (EDM) records showing overflow operation Near-real-time or recent activity, depending on the map’s display and update process
What is the longer-term spill record and regulatory context? NRW annual storm-overflow spill-data reports Water-company EDM submissions reviewed by the regulator Annual reporting, not a live condition at one location

If you suspect pollution that is not adequately represented by any map or result page, use NRW’s current Report an incident service and follow the instructions shown there. The reporting page determines the current contact channel and the information to provide.

Why an alert and a water-quality result are not the same thing

What a storm-overflow map tells you

A storm overflow is designed to release diluted wastewater when heavy rainfall or high flows threaten to overwhelm parts of the sewer system. An EDM records whether the overflow operated and how long the event lasted. A water company map turns those monitored events into a public activity view.

That is evidence about overflow operation. It does not directly measure bacteria at your beach, riverbank or swimming entry point. Shared Regulatory Services Wales specifically explains that the Dŵr Cymru overflow map does not provide water-quality information. Treat a displayed spill as a reason to investigate conditions and follow local safety advice, not as a laboratory result.

What a bathing-water sample tells you

NRW’s designated bathing-water programme collects samples at named sites and uses bacterial measurements, including E. coli and intestinal enterococci, to calculate annual classifications. A result is tied to a sampling location and date. It describes the water tested there; it is not a continuous sensor reading for the entire coastline, catchment or river.

Why timing matters

An overflow can operate between scheduled samples. Conversely, a sample can be taken after an overflow event has ended. Check the timestamp, location and programme behind every result before drawing a conclusion about swimming. The safest interpretation is to combine the most recent relevant bathing-water result with any current overflow information and on-site warnings.

Step 1: Find the exact NRW bathing-water site

  1. Identify the named place. Search for the beach or bathing site by its official name, not only by a nearby town. A large bay, lake or river can contain more than one designated site.
  2. Open the NRW bathing-water service. Use the site profile and the linked “Check bathing water quality” results. The profile establishes the official sampling location and provides the context needed to read its results.
  3. Check the sample date and result. Note when the sample was collected and whether the page is showing an individual result, a seasonal series or an annual classification.
  4. Read the annual classification separately. The Welsh Government classifications index links maps and detailed classification information. Do not treat the annual category as a live reading for today.

NRW’s page updated 13 May 2026 says Wales has 114 designated bathing waters. Each is scheduled to be tested at least eight times in the 2026 season, which runs from 1 May to 30 September. “At least eight” is a minimum sampling schedule, not a promise of daily testing or continuous monitoring.

Step 2: Check the relevant storm-overflow map

Choose the correct water company

Use the map operated by the company serving the sewer network in the area you are checking. NRW’s 2023 report identifies near-real-time maps launched in 2024 by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water and Hafren Dyfrdwy, using EDM data. A map may show only monitored overflows and may use its own display labels, update interval and coverage rules.

Search by the overflow or nearby place

Locate the overflow closest to the bathing site or river access point. Read the map legend and the event details rather than relying on a colour alone. Record the overflow name, event status and displayed time so you can compare it with sample dates and any local signs.

Interpret the result narrowly

  • Active or recent event: the EDM indicates that the monitored overflow has operated during the period shown by the map.
  • No event displayed: this does not prove that the water is clean. It may mean no event is shown for that overflow, that the map has a different reporting window, or that another source of pollution is involved.
  • No nearby overflow: the bathing site can still be affected by upstream discharges, diffuse runoff, misconnections, wildlife, or incidents outside the map’s monitored assets.

Never describe the map as a bacteria test. Its evidence type is operational: whether an overflow ran and, where provided, for how long.

Step 3: Use NRW’s annual spill reports for historical context

Water companies submit annual EDM data to NRW. The regulator reviews those submissions and publishes storm-overflow spill-data reports. These reports are useful when you want to understand the scale of monitored overflow activity across Wales, compare a company’s reported performance for a stated year, or see the regulator’s explanations of data coverage and limitations.

They are not a guarantee about conditions at a particular beach or river at the moment you check. A report covering 2023 cannot establish what is happening today, and a national average cannot predict the water quality at one outfall.

What the 2023 report says

  • Wales had more than 2,000 permitted storm overflows.
  • EDM coverage was reported as more than 99%.
  • In 2023, the average was 53.5 spills per Dŵr Cymru overflow with spill data.
  • In 2023, the average was 38.8 spills per Hafren Dyfrdwy overflow with spill data.

Those averages apply to the report’s defined population of overflows with spill data and to 2023. NRW cautioned that its two-year dataset was too short for a robust trend assessment. Do not turn the figures into a claim that spills are steadily rising or falling over the long term.

How to read Wales’s bathing-water classifications

The 2025 snapshot

The Welsh Government’s classification update, last updated 18 November 2025, reported results for 112 bathing waters: 78 were classified excellent, 26 good and 6 satisfactory. This is an annual classification snapshot, not a live water-quality reading and not a result for every river, lake or coastal access point in Wales.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why you may see 112 and 114

The 112-site figure belongs to the 2025 classification pages. NRW’s later bathing-water page describes the 2026 season and lists 114 designated bathing waters. Cite the year and source whenever you use either count; do not merge them into one timeless total. The 2026 annual report was scheduled for 18 December 2026, after the date of the available information, so the 2025 classification remains the latest stated annual snapshot here.

What a classification does and does not cover

An annual category summarizes the programme’s samples over the classification period. It is useful for comparing the established bathing-water record, but it cannot certify water quality at an un-designated stretch or account for a short-lived incident after the last sample. Routine river monitoring can answer a different environmental question.

Do not confuse river-condition monitoring with bathing-water quality

A 2 September 2026 Welsh Government statement about the River Tawe illustrates the distinction. NRW reviewed incident reports, water-quality information and wastewater operational information and found no evidence of pollution or significant deterioration in its most recent routine monitoring. The statement also cautioned that routine river monitoring there assesses environmental condition under Water Framework Directive regulations, rather than bathing-water quality.

Therefore, a statement that a river’s ecological condition has not deteriorated is not a universal declaration that it is safe to swim. Match the monitoring programme to the decision you are making: bathing-water results for a designated swimming site, overflow data for monitored operational events, and river-condition data for broader ecological status.

What to do when the sources disagree

Overflow activity is shown, but the latest sample was acceptable

Keep both facts. The sample describes the water at its collection point and time; the overflow map records a separate operational event. Look for any local authority or site warning, check the sample timestamp, and avoid treating the acceptable result as proof that conditions remained unchanged after sampling.

No overflow is shown, but the water looks or smells polluted

Do not assume the absence of a map event means there is no pollution. A monitored overflow may not be the source, the event may fall outside the display window, or the problem may be an incident elsewhere. Report suspected pollution through NRW’s incident route and follow the live instructions.

A general river report sounds reassuring, but you want to swim

Find the designated bathing-water profile, if one exists, and read its sample results and classification. General Water Framework Directive monitoring is not a substitute for bathing-water testing.

The map and the site profile use different place names

Confirm the official bathing-water name, the overflow asset and the physical distance between them. A nearby pin is not proof that both systems refer to the same water body or exposure point.

How often each source updates

Source Update pattern Best use Main limitation
NRW bathing-water results Individual samples during the season Measured bacterial result at a designated site and date Not continuous; does not cover every un-designated water stretch
Water-company overflow map Near-real-time or recent EDM activity Checking whether a monitored overflow has operated Operational data, not a water-quality test; coverage is asset-specific
NRW annual spill report Annual submission, review and publication Historical and regulatory context Too slow and broad to establish current conditions at one location
NRW incident-reporting service Current instructions set by NRW Reporting suspected pollution or an incident The reporting page must be checked for the current channel and required evidence

A practical decision sequence before visiting the water

  1. Define the activity and place. Swimming at a designated beach requires a different check from investigating an ecological incident on an ordinary river reach.
  2. Read the latest NRW site information. Confirm the official site name, sample date and result, then note the annual classification separately.
  3. Check the relevant company map. Look for active or recent monitored overflow events near the site and record the displayed time.
  4. Look for on-site and local-authority warnings. Signs, temporary notices and lifeguard advice can reflect information not yet visible in a national result page.
  5. Decide conservatively when evidence is incomplete. A missing alert is not a clean bill of health, and a historical classification cannot resolve a current incident.
  6. Report suspected pollution. Use NRW’s “Report an incident” service and provide the location, time, visible signs and any relevant map or sample details requested by the form.

Coverage, sampling and data caveats

  • Designated versus ordinary waters: The bathing-water programme does not test every river, lake or coastal stretch with the same schedule. An un-designated location may have no bathing-water profile or classification.
  • Sampling is periodic: Even with at least eight scheduled tests at each of the 114 designated waters in 2026, gaps remain between samples.
  • EDM is not universal proof of absence: More than 99% EDM coverage in the 2023 NRW report is a national coverage figure, not a guarantee that every possible discharge or pollution source is represented on a public map.
  • Annual averages hide local variation: The 2023 spill averages describe groups of overflows with spill data. They do not predict the count for a particular outfall.
  • Old delivery targets are not current status: A 2022 Welsh Government action plan and October 2023 progress notes contain historic commitments and target dates. The current evidence for public near-real-time maps is NRW’s statement that Dŵr Cymru and Hafren Dyfrdwy launched them in 2024.

What information to save when you check

Keep a short record if you need to make a decision, report an incident or explain a discrepancy:

  • Exact bathing-water or river name and nearest access point
  • Date and time you checked each page
  • NRW sample date, result and classification wording
  • Overflow name, status and event time shown on the company map
  • Photographs or descriptions of unusual colour, foam, odour, dead fish or debris
  • Any warning sign, closure notice or advice from local authorities or site staff

This record preserves the context that can disappear when a live map changes or a temporary warning is removed.

Frequently misunderstood points

“There is no red marker, so the water is safe.”

Not necessarily. The map reports monitored overflow activity, not all pollution and not bacterial concentration. Use the relevant bathing-water result and current local advice as well.

“The beach was rated excellent, so today’s water must be excellent.”

No. “Excellent” is an annual classification based on the programme’s samples. It does not replace a current check for incidents, overflow activity or temporary warnings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A storm overflow is always raw sewage.”

The map’s EDM record establishes operation, not the exact composition or bacterial level at your location. Avoid inferring a laboratory result from the event marker.

“A river with good ecological status is a designated swimming site.”

Those are different monitoring purposes. Water Framework Directive river-condition monitoring assesses environmental condition; bathing-water monitoring assesses the designated site for bathing-water classification.

Reporting a suspected pollution incident

NRW’s homepage provides a “Report an incident” route. Open the live service before submitting so you use the current channel, evidence requirements and response instructions. Give the most precise location you can, explain what you observed and when, and include relevant overflow or sample information if available. Do not wait for a map marker if you can see or smell a possible pollution event.

Bottom line for a Wales water check

For a specific swimming place, use the NRW site profile and sample results first; use the local water company’s storm-overflow map to check monitored operational events; and consult NRW’s annual reports when you need historical context. Keep the evidence types and time scales separate. A spill alert is not a water-quality test, an annual classification is not live, and a general river-monitoring statement is not a bathing-water safety guarantee.
