To find seafood restaurants near you, search a map or regional seafood directory, confirm a restaurant’s current hours and menu, and check its latest inspection information with the local health department or state food-safety authority. To judge a particular fish dish, ask what species it is, where and when it arrived, whether it was previously frozen, and—especially for raw seafood—how it was thawed and kept cold. Clear answers help you make an informed choice, but neither a directory listing nor a staff explanation proves freshness.
How to find seafood restaurants near you
- Search by location. Use a map app or search engine with “seafood restaurants near me” or a search for seafood restaurants in your town or neighborhood. Check the restaurant’s own site or call to confirm current hours and menu; listings can be out of date.
- Try a regional seafood directory. Some government agencies maintain local directories with filters for businesses, categories, or specialties. New Jersey’s Seafood Finder, for example, lists seafood businesses and offers category and specialty filters. It is a New Jersey resource, not a nationwide restaurant directory.
- Compare more than menu wording. A listing or a menu phrase such as “fresh catch” can help you identify a candidate, but it does not establish when or how the seafood was caught, stored, or handled.
How to check a restaurant’s inspection information
Look up the restaurant through the health department or food-safety authority responsible for its location. The CDC’s Food Safety Tips for Dining Out advises diners to check restaurant inspection scores through the restaurant or local health department. In some places results are published by a city or county; elsewhere the state agency may be the right source. If you cannot find the record, contact the local authority or ask the restaurant where its inspection information is available.

What to ask about the fish
Ask before ordering if the menu does not give enough detail. For example:

- “What species is this?”
- “Where is it from, and when did it arrive?”
- “Was it previously frozen?”
- For raw seafood: “How was it thawed, and how has it been kept cold?”
Specific, direct answers can clarify what is being served and how it has been handled. They are useful transparency signals, not independent proof that the seafood is fresh or safe. If the answer is vague or changes when you ask a follow-up, choose another dish or restaurant.
What freshness cues can—and cannot—tell you
NOAA Fisheries’ Tips for Buying Quality Seafood and the FDA’s Selecting and Serving Fresh and Frozen Seafood Safely describe cues for selecting seafood, particularly at retail. A mild, fresh smell and proper refrigeration or ice are useful signs. For a whole fish, clear eyes and firm flesh can also be helpful. These visible or sensory cues do not reveal the full handling history, and diners generally cannot assess storage conditions before a dish reaches the table.

Color alone is not a reliable freshness test: fish color varies for several reasons, including processing, and previously frozen fish may not show some typical visual cues. Likewise, do not treat a smell check as a substitute for inspection information or safe handling. FDA consumer guidance says not to eat seafood that smells sour, rancid, fishy, or like ammonia; that advice is not a way to certify a restaurant dish by smell.
If you are considering raw seafood
The FDA’s July 2018 handout, 4 Food Safety Tips for Eating Raw Seafood at Restaurants, labels one recommendation “RESEARCH THE RESTAURANT.” It advises consumers to look up inspection results on local or state regulatory-agency websites and ask whether seafood was frozen, thawed, and kept on ice. These questions can inform your decision, but raw seafood still carries food-safety risks.

Under the FDA’s raw-seafood guidance, people who are pregnant or nursing, immunocompromised, or have certain chronic health conditions should choose something other than raw seafood. Consult current FDA advice or a health professional if you need guidance for your circumstances.

- Menu and availability: Does the menu identify the species, and can staff confirm the item is available today?
- Sourcing detail: Can staff say where and when the fish arrived?
- Handling detail: Can they say whether it was previously frozen and, for raw seafood, how it was thawed and kept cold?
- Consistency: Are the answers direct and consistent with the menu?
No one item in this comparison proves freshness. Inspection records concern compliance; menu and staff details help you understand the dish and its handling.
