To find sci-fi action anime with a similar feel to a series you love, pin down what you want to match—such as its setting, action, tone, visuals, or story focus—then search for candidates by genre and compare them on those specific traits. A shared “sci-fi” or “action” label is a starting filter, not proof that two shows will feel alike.
Turn “same style” into a short preference profile
Before searching, choose two or three features that made your favorite work for you. “More sci-fi action” is too broad: one show might be appealing for tactical battles and military scale, while another leans on comedy, mystery, or character drama.

- Setting and scale: Do you want space travel, a futuristic city, military conflict, or a story focused on a smaller group?
- Action and pacing: Are you after fast, frequent fights, carefully planned tactics, or bursts of action between quieter scenes?
- Mood: Should the next show feel serious, playful, tense, or emotionally intimate?
- Visual presentation: Is a distinctive design or animation approach part of what you want to repeat?
- Story emphasis: Do you prefer character relationships, political conflict, mystery, or spectacle?
Mark which qualities are essential and which can vary. That gives you a useful search brief without pretending there is an official formula for measuring anime similarity.
Search by genre, then narrow the results
Use an anime catalog’s title, category, or genre search to find a first pool of possibilities. Crunchyroll describes these as ways to search for shows in its help information about available shows, and its action browse page illustrates that category browsing can surface genre combinations. These tools help you discover candidates; the labels do not establish that a title matches your particular preferences.
#1 Best Overall
A genre guide can also provide a starting list. Crunchyroll’s Essential Sci-Fi Anime on Crunchyroll was published June 20, 2023. Treat it as an editorial guide, not a current guarantee that every listed series is still available to stream.
Compare each candidate on the traits you care about
For each promising title, check how it lines up with your profile. A practical comparison looks like this:
Rank #2
- Factory sealed DVD
| Question | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Does the world feel similar? | Setting, scale, and whether the story is centered on a small cast, a military force, or a broader society. |
| Does the action work the same way? | Choreography, tactical detail, frequency of fights, and how quickly the story moves between them. |
| Will the tone suit you? | How serious or playful the show feels, and whether that mood is consistent or shifts. |
| Does it have the visual appeal you want? | Its visual presentation and design, rather than just its genre tags. |
| Is the story focused on the right things? | The balance of character relationships, political conflict, mystery, and spectacle. |
This is a decision aid, not a validated scoring system. A show can be a strong match on one axis and a poor match on another; decide whether that trade-off matters before you add it to your watchlist.

Use recommendations as leads, not verdicts
Community suggestions can widen your candidate list, especially when you describe your favorite and the qualities you want to carry over. In one r/anime discussion about action or sci-fi recommendations, suggestions included Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song, Gurren Lagann, 86 Eighty-Six, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Deca-Dence, Metallic Rouge, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, and Steins;Gate.

Those are individual community suggestions, not a ranked list or a guarantee that every title fits every meaning of “sci-fi action.” Check a candidate against your own profile: it may share the futuristic setting but differ in tone, pacing, or story emphasis.

Once you have a shortlist, look up each title in the streaming catalogs available in your country. Confirm that the series is currently listed there and whether watching it requires a particular subscription tier. Catalogs change, and a general genre page or older guide cannot confirm present availability in your region.
